Sorry, just seen this but yes, I'd still like to be considered if you go ahead please.

Good luck gang, go slay some dragons!

Best of luck all! There are some great looking characters in there.

Consider me interested, let's roll some dice...
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6, 1) = 12 > 11
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 4) = 20 > 16
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 6) = 16 > 15
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 2) = 17 > 15
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 3) = 14 > 12
Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 2, 2) = 14 > 12
That'll do nicely!

Well done team, have fun!

Well this looks very exciting - Curse of the Crimson Throne is top of my AP wishlist!

I have a blossoming light cleric of Pulura in mind that I could retool and I think would fit nicely. Accordingly I have a couple of questions: is variant channelling ok? I'd like to move into the stargazer PRC - would this be alright?

Lots of great advice here and I support basically all of it. These are old but I think the advice remains solid for new and experienced players alike so they’re worth a read – playing (basics), playing (advanced) and GMing PBP. PBP is a slow way of playing but it does allow for in depth roleplay, which I think is a key selling point. It also does tend to mean that players get very attached to their characters so will usually jump at the chance to continue to play them!

I am fully behind the idea of starting small for all the reasons mentioned. GMing is plenty of work and a long-term commitment. If you run a module and enjoy it and everyone wants to continue it’s easy enough to add another one on and go again, maybe eventually leading to a whole campaign. Given you’ve said you don’t love the very lowest levels and have listed your “sweet spot” level range, it’s potentially worth thinking about whether you want to run something that really is just a one shot, in which case it doesn’t really matter what level it is as long as you’re happy with it, or if it’s something that you hope might evolve into something more. If the latter then maybe starting lower is a good thing as there’s more scope to stay within that range over time. Starting towards the lower end also means it’s easier for you to have a better understanding of what the characters can do – even with decent system mastery it’s not always easy to tell exactly how strong certain characters are until you see them in action and the higher the level, the more moving parts, abilities and options available to players.

I also think the point about picking players over builds is underrated. You don’t always have a lot to go on so it might be vibes-based, and you can be wrong, but because of the slow nature of PBP, you’ll be playing together for a while so it helps if everyone is on the same page. Most recruitments tend to be done with character submissions but it’s not uncommon for the GM to select a bunch of people and then everyone develops their character. And regardless of how you do it, it is quite daunting to actually have to make a selection, especially if you’ve got four applicants for every space at the table (or that’s my experience, anyway!) Setting player expectations about what kind of game you’re running in line with the module/AP is helpful too – the more steer you can give people on the kind of game you want to run and who you are, the more likely you are to attract the players and characters you want.

Something I don’t think has been mentioned is to decide how many players you want. Personally I err towards more players for PBP – more players helps keep things moving, especially when real life happens and everyone has ebbs and flows in terms of availability. As others have said, player attrition is also real too so factoring that in from the start is a good idea. Fortunately there’s usually no shortage of people keen to play so you can find replacements, but it’s far from uncommon for someone to drop out very early or even before the game begins. You may need to adjust encounters to accommodate a higher number of players given modules and APs are generally written with four players in mind.

In terms of what you want to run, I agree that it’s important to pick something that appeals to you, both in terms of theme (classic fantasy, gothic horror, pirates) and style of play (RP-heavy political intrigue, dungeon crawl, heist). Here’s a good recent overview of what to expect from the APs and how the community generally feels about them. I’m not sure if there’s anything similar for the modules but the community hivemind may be able to help. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a list of modules organised by starting level at least – I’ll see if I can dig it out for you.

Good luck guys, have fun!

Happy if you want to reach out too.

Am I too late to toss my hat into the ring provided I can get something sorted within 48 hours? I've got a half-elf mesmerist in the works.

Congrats - have fun, team!

This definitely looks fun, I've had a dip into the player's guide and got a couple of ideas knocking around. I'd missed the stat rolling on first glance, though I suspect it leans towards SAD characters unless the dice gods are smiling. Let's find out if they are...

Roll: 1d4 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Roll: 1d4 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Roll: 1d4 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
Roll: 1d4 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Not particularly!

Hmm, this is an intriguing one. Gonna throw some ideas around and see if inspiration strikes with a concept and come back later to read properly when I’ve got more time.

Thanks for sharing. That’s an awful lot going on all at once, thoughts with you and the family.

Skill change is fine.

In terms of stat adjustments, I set out my general opinions in the original recruitment thread. I also want to make it as easy as possible so you nobody has a ton of reworking to do.

To that end...
Joreld, Calen and Ialia: You may each increase one of your primary stats by +1. The +1s may or may not be immediately useful but they're obviously long-term good.
Samara and Tara: Please reduce one of your lowest stats by 2 points. Taking off the -2 means that everyone will end up with at least one stat that has a +0 or +1 mod (which as dump stats go isn't bad!)
Pick: You're fine just as you are.

I'm also conscious that I don't want to keep people waiting so I intend to get a first gameplay post up today so you can start making in character introductions etc.

I'm assuming that none of your characters know each other, though I welcome pre-existing connections if you think it makes sense and want to work on them. This can be done in the background though, it isn't going to hold up getting started (same with stat tweaking etc.)

@Tara The above also applies if you're still working on your character. No worries if they're not finished but provided you've got an alias you'll be able to jump right in.

No worries, and totally agree with you on RAW. Fwiw, that guidance comes from the FAQ on the d20pfsrd page for the archetype, effectively making it a GM call, on which she has ruled. I'm good. Kind of interesting to peek behind the curtain at a sliver of Paizo politics.

"
FAQ

With the Witch’s ability to grab as a free action on an attack, is that also a swift action or does it function like the monster ability Grab?

The grab part of the white hair (ability) functions like the monster ability; it doesn’t take an action at all and is a part of the main attack.

[Source]

Note: The Paizo staffer making the above statement was James Jacobs, the Creative Director. It is important to note that James, while very knowledgeable, is not a developer or designer of the Pathfinder rules and is occasionally overruled by one of the designers (like Jason, Sean, or Stephen.) In this case though since this post has been up since January of 2012, it seems that it has not been challenged or overruled by another designer. In any case, since this has not appeared in an “official” errata document, it is up to the GM to determine if this is the way the ability runs in his or her campaign.
"

I had seen that, I just read it as 'it can grab', not 'it has Grab', and the answer still says 'functions like' rather than 'is'. I think this is one of those things that monsters can do but PCs by default can't unless it explicitly says otherwise.

Duly noted on the change of patron.

Re. Discord I'm about to send you all links. You'll need to create a profile if you've not used it before but I promise it's pretty straightforward. It's definitely useful for general ooc chat and for making decisions that don't just rely on slow back and forth, and the much quicker dialogue.

Ialia Frostmoon wrote:

Pah, locks and traps? How important could that be?

With Ialia, given DM Tara's generous build rules, I set out to do the impossible: make an effective White Witch grappler! Well, it's still sort of impossible but with max buffs and ideal tactical conditions, she's +18 to grapple with her hair, and that's with reach and also flying. I'll ask DM Slowdrifter to check my math on that in the profile and we can take the discussion to PM if you like. One question: do you consider the White Witch Grab ability to be the same as for Monsters, thus giving the addl +4 bonus? That would put her at +22 to grab under absolute ideal circumstances.

I previously asked DM Tara if she would be open to me changing Patrons depending on the final group makeup and she said yes so I didn't finalize my thinking on that. As it stands I think Healing could be well placed here although I'd like to get the group's input if such a change is still allowed.

My inclination is to say no on the additional grab bonus. My reading is that it functions mechanically in the same way but at no point is it called grab (or even mentions the word grab) so I'd say that it's similar but not explicitly that. BUT I also have no specific experience of this ability and how others generally rule it, and while there is GM fiat and we could just roll with that, as already stated I'm happy to revise this is a majority think that I'm wrong.

Very happy if you want to change patron provided it still makes sense for Ialia personally (or make the tweaks you need in order to do so). I'd also say that healing seems a solid choice for the group. The party does have a druid, an inquisitor and a paladin who can heal but there's no cleric or oracle. Having access to status removal spells is never going to be a bad choice.

Pick wrote:

My immediate thought is let's see what Tara wants to bring :3

If we still need DD after that, it's an option, pending SlowDrifter's thoughts.

I agree probably makes sense to wait and see first.

I have no problem with someone trading in a trait and making it work, this is the kind of adjustment I was anticipating. If you were working as a group on characters then you'd be having these discussions in advance rather than everyone building individually not knowing the rest of the party make-up.

Thanks for stopping by and reading the essay so quickly!

Not knowing exactly what Tara has settled on for her character - and she may have this covered as I did mention it to her - off the top of my head the one thing that I don't think anyone in the party actually has is disable device. Probably wait and see but that might be worth looking at someone picking up. Or you can just find other ways round it.

After much deliberation I have made my final decisions. Would the following please make their way to the discussion thread and say hello.

TheWaskally - Joreld Huntsilver (human paladin)
Codanus - Calen Derethor (human inquisitor)
Therenger - Ialia Frostmoon (changeling witch)
Stormraven - Samara of the Sword (human monk/sorcerer)

Thank you again to everybody for taking the time to apply, giving me a lot of interesting reading and difficult choices, and for responding to my queries. Best of luck and happy gaming to all.

I’m very excited (and, if I’m honest, a little daunted!) to be playing with you all but we’ve got some great characters and players here so I think that will translate into a great game.

I’m sure you’re all keen to get things started but I wanted to run through some general housekeeping and things first. Hopefully much of this is ‘common sense’ and what you would expect of other games on the boards, though I know that can be a very subjective term so better to be clear from the start. I know there’s a lot here but I think it’s useful so there’s no tl;dr I’m afraid.

Information

I’m a firm believer that we’re all ultimately playing here together on the same side. My role as GM is to help create and facilitate fun stories and situations, not to be adversarial. This is supposed to be fun for everyone. To that end, I think the onus is on everybody to post regularly and keep things moving, though as GM ultimately I am that bit more responsible and that comes with the territory. I know we aspire to a post a day but I also know from experience that everybody has other things going on and sometimes life gets busy, sometimes unexpectedly. Hopefully we have enough players to move things along and pick up the slack when somebody is a bit quieter. And, if possible, a heads up is always appreciated.

To that end I plan on using Discord for general group chat. I’ve found it to be very helpful in my longest running games and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. It allows for quick communication, gives people a good place to chat out of character and aids group bonding, all of which is useful in keeping a successful game going. Just in case anyone is sceptical - and this is purely anecdotal - I’d never used it prior to my first game on the boards and I definitely see the value it brings so please give it a try.

I’ve not found it has mattered but just so you all know I’m based in the UK so probably operating in a different timezone to many of you. And with two small children I’m usually up before some west coast US folks have gone to bed!

I know everybody will be coming in with different levels of knowledge of the Forgotten Realms - I’m a big fan and this was one of my inspirations for deciding to run the game. Building knowledge is also not helped by edition changes and inconsistencies (maps, deities and the planes are things that seem to change and shift every edition). To reiterate, we’re playing in a 2E/3E era timeline, starting in 1373 DR, so this is all pre-Spellplague. There are plenty of resources online and the wiki is generally a good place to start. It’s full of information though you do have to get used to the fact it’s written in the past tense and bouncing around between articles isn’t always the most coherent way to absorb information. The relative paucity of lore developments in the 4E/5E era also means that the majority of information there should be relevant. I’m also always happy to answer questions and please prod me if I get lost in the weeds with niche lore or information dumps. I’ll always want to make sure that you know the things that are important and anything else that is window dressing but helps with worldbuilding and what’s going on around you. I don’t believe that players should be penalised for not knowing things that their character would. And on a similar note, I don’t think players should be penalised for not remembering things either. PBP is a long form game and weeks or months can pass in real time between critical pieces of information so I’m always happy to prompt and recap things that your characters know.

In terms of tone and content, bad things can and do happen in fantasy worlds with unpleasant people and literal demons. I like to keep options on the table in terms of how people want to develop their characters and the Realms can be an open, tolerant place in some ways and less so in others, often dependent on who and where we’re talking about. In However, there are obviously red lines and the things that you’d expect to be off-limits (sexual violence etc.) very much are. Think Lord of the Rings rather than Game of Thrones. If anybody has anything that for whatever reason they would like the game to avoid in terms of content or themes then please let me know either publicly or privately. I also ask everybody to be respectful and mindful of other people’s boundaries, beliefs and values.

I posted a little bit about myself when I said I was going to run this game but I grew up playing 2E D&D and have most of my experience in the 3/3.5E era, through which I was Forever GM in my regular group and also played a bit of PBP. We started to switch to PF1 when that was just starting but it also coincided with me relocating after university and with a new city, new job etc. fell off for a long period of time. However, I started to dive back into some of my old material a few years ago, culminating in me taking the plunge and applying for a game on the boards. Three years later it’s still going along happily.

All of which is a long-winded way of saying I definitely don’t have as much experience on the boards or with the game as many people here and the PF rules are large, unwieldy and sometimes unclear and open to interpretation. I have definitely made mistakes but am always happy to work with people to correct rulings and retcon things as necessary. And when it comes down to it my inclination is normally to “yes and” and lean towards story and rule of cool over complex rules lawyering.

Player actions

There are also a couple of things that would be useful for you all to please look at before we get going properly.

The game will be starting in Daggerdale, where a call has gone out from the Lord of the Dale looking for adventurers. Can you think please about how you have heard about this and what brings you to answer the call. Realistically such news will only travel so far regionally but you’re all experienced adventurers with friends, allies and information networks. For example, you could have heard about it through your church, the society you’re a member of, or your cousin in Shadowdale town who knows that you’ve been down on your luck recently and in need of coin. I don’t need essays - or even anything necessarily written down - just a basic idea of what brings you here.

Mechanically, I’ll have a look at the previously mentioned stat tinkering and speak to you individually. Now we have the full party you are welcome to make any tweaks in light of the party make up, e.g. spell options if you want to avoid overlap or ensure more bases are covered. I’m sure you’ll be checking out each other’s character sheets but I think it would also probably be worth just giving everyone a brief summary of your build in terms of what you see your role as, both in and out combat.

If anyone wants to do a deep dive into the party’s strengths and weaknesses I’m certainly not going to stop you but given the generous build rules you’ve got a lot of power and flexibility. One of my considerations was trying to assemble a broadly balanced party and with everyone capable of doing more than one thing, I don’t think there are likely to be any major gaps in your capabilities.

If you could also post and then delete in the gameplay thread then it should link your characters to the game.

* * * * *

Apologies for length but I think it’s worth taking the time to do this - plus I’m a natural worrier! I’m also sure that I will have forgotten something so if you have any questions please do ask. A common thread running through a lot of this is communication (and at least 50% of TTRPG questions posted online can usually be answered with “Have you tried talking to them?”) I always aim to be open, approachable and collaborative and feedback is how we improve and make sure everyone is having fun, which really is why we’re here...

Hello everyone and welcome!

I'm waiting on some messages but hopefully I should be able to make a final decision soon. Thanks again to everyone who has replied to my questions.

Hello folks, following on from Tara’s post, I will be aiming to make a decision as soon as possible. I’ve been working through the applications and there’s a lot to digest, plus I won’t know exactly which characters I’ll have to choose from until I’ve seen Tara’s final party. I’ll also add that I live in the UK so factoring in time zones there’s a fair chance I won’t know this until tomorrow morning. I therefore don’t want to put a set time on it at this point but rest assured I’ve not been sitting idle. I don’t want to keep people waiting and I’m keen to get going!

Some of you will have received messages from me (thanks for the responses so far), some haven’t, but I want to clarify that receiving a message or not is no indication of whether or not you may be selected.

For the sake of transparency, I am following Tara’s original brief and will be factoring in your build, background and personality, posting record, and group dynamics as my criteria. There’s a lot to weigh up and balance but I will be honest and say that for me personally I’m a sucker for interesting, well-rounded characters who have made good use of the generous character creation rules to achieve this.

Finally, thank you again for all taking the time to apply - something for which I can take precisely zero credit!

Re. character roles. My view is that with the stats, skills and feat allowance, most characters can do quite a lot and perform some roles to a lesser or greater degree. Having some kind of broad categorisation is definitely useful (thanks Tara!) but it's never going to capture everything a character can do and just looking across any of the categories you can that the characters within are all pretty different.

@Sigmar Darastrix I have a few thoughts - and this is purely my opinion and how I'm looking at it - but I think you're making the wrong comparisons here. Sigmar's stats do make him superhuman. The average stat is 10-11 so your average man or woman has that across the board. Assuming a normal distribution curve, the majority of people will have stats clustered around that, some a bit higher, others a bit lower. Sigmar is insanely strong and incredibly charismatic, far in excess of the vast majority of people. Then throw in draconic heritage, magical powers and gear worth far more than the average commoner will see in a lifetime. To all intents and purposes, he is superhuman compared to almost everyone he meets (you could argue that probably most adventurers are to some degree once they get beyond the first few levels - sometimes it's easy to forget how powerful adventurers are compared to most people). It just happens that in this instance he's teamed up with the Avengers - or the Justice League, if you're prefer him to be Batman ;-). Definitely not every character will far outstrip him in all respects, this just might be one of those rare instances where he encounters someone he can't beat in an arm wrestle without trying. And as heroes and villains have found out in stories as old as time, there is always someone smarter, stronger, more powerful. Personally I'd see that as a great roleplaying opportunity and a chance to see how he reacts and develops.

Obviously it's up to you - I'm happy to consider you still if you'd like. Equally, if you'd prefer to withdraw that's absolutely fine too. But thought I'd share my perspective on the situation.

Good point, thanks for raising.

tl; dr - Stat rolling will definitely not be a reason for me to not pick anybody or give anyone any kind of advantage or disadvantage in terms of selection. It is not something anybody has control over so is therefore not a fair criterion in my view.

I will be looking to equalise stats to a degree in line with Tara’s comments on the matter. Any miscommunication on this my fault, I’d assumed that as part of the original character creation rules when it was an additional point after that I hadn’t explicitly referenced.

My opinion is that everybody has got good stats from the rolling here, though some obviously did better than others (and I’m speaking as someone who was definitely at the top end and has submitted an elf witch with a largely redundant 14 Strength!) I will also say that there will always be some discrepancies between characters in terms of stats because that is the nature of rolling, and why some people prefer point buy. Some people are always going to be below average, others above. So while I’ll look at doing a bit of tinkering, I’m also not going to be exactly equalising everything either as that just becomes point buy.

The lowest anybody rolled is still equivalent to 30 point buy which should be sufficient to open up options for even very MAD builds that might otherwise be off the table so I don’t think anybody is in a position where their stat roll has prevented them playing what they would like to play. Everyone is also in the position where they can get at least an 18 in their primary stat. It’s also nice that the rolling is generous enough to open up some options for different character choices without feeling you have to compromise, e.g. you could make a non-paladin martial who can be a face because there’s less need to feel you have to tank Cha.

My opinion is also that after a point some of it is just the icing on top and a bit unnecessary, which I think aligns with what you’re saying. For instance 15 point buy is a fair bit stronger than 10 point buy and the same applies to the difference between 20 and 15. I’m less convinced that there’s such an imbalance between say 50 and 45. Knocking off a couple of points in a couple of places shouldn’t break anything, radically change anybody’s character and, I trust, affect anybody’s sense of fun and enjoyment.

I hope this clarifies things and puts minds at ease.

Thank you for the enthusiastic feedback everyone, it’s appreciated.

@Monkeygod I’m happy to consider your application. I’m going to draw the line there as you’re the sole character on the list that was part-developed at the original cut-off point. The deadline will be to have them ready by the time I’m making my selections, though I can’t give you an exact timeframe for that as it’s dependent on when GM Tara makes her choices.

@Albion, The Eye Yes, to clarify I will be using the same character creation rules. To do otherwise would require a large number of people to make changes to a lesser or greater degree, at worst causing some people to radically rethink their character concepts or builds and that doesn’t seem fair to me.

Game recruitment announcement

Hello all, as ever there are a lot of cool characters here, far more than will go into one game. I’ve been speaking to GM Tara and with her blessing, I’m going to run a second table for this game – or at least a totally different game set in the Forgotten Realms using some of these characters.

Once she has made her selections I will then make mine from the remainder. I have offered GM Tara a place at the table as she’s already done the hard graft of prep for this one and I have another place reserved for a player who I owe a game. I will therefore be choosing four more characters from the excellent array here to bring the party up to six.

I will default to assuming that everyone would like to be considered but if for any reason you don’t want to be that’s obviously fine, please just let me know.

A little about me: I’m a big fan of the Forgotten Realms from this era, it’s what I grew up playing and if I were to pick a game that is always going to pique my interest it’s this. It’s also what I’d choose to run and I started to think about it and come up with some ideas so I’ve decided to run with it. I enjoy worldbuilding and storytelling and aspire to have the heroes as the focus in a living world. I’ve been around the boards for a while now, not as long as many of people here but I’ve had the pleasure of playing with a number of you and hopefully will with some more soon.

I will endeavour to get things going as soon as I can. Thanks for your time and happy to field any questions.

@Tara Ravenheart I've got a few questions that I don't think have been asked (apologies if I missed them):

How are you handling domains? Are you using the 3.x ones from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and adjusting as necessary?

Similarly, with Golarian-flavoured religious things e.g. traits are you letting people take them provided they make sense between the pantheons? For example, Iomedae things probably work for a worshipper of Tyr, Torm, Helm, and make calls on a case by case basis?

I assume we still add the +1 stat bonus for 4th level on top of the generous initial rolling?

How do you feel about magical equipment stacking, e.g. combining a cloak of resistance and a cloak of elvenkind provided you pay the additional cost to do so in line with the magic item creation rules?

Also, some hp rolls: Hit points: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 5) = 16

Thanks for running this, I'm very interested as old school Forgotten Realms is definitely my jam. The Heartlands, you say? Perfect.

I think I have something up my sleeve for just such an occasion: a moon elf witch with hex channeler as the free archetype. She's a worshipper of Sehanine Moonbow and something of a mystic, straddling the boundary between arcane and divine.

Let's roll up some stats:
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4) + 6 = 22 18
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2) + 6 = 15 14
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2) + 6 = 19 17
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1, 4) + 6 = 15 14
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6) + 6 = 20 18
Stats: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3) + 6 = 16 14

I think I can probably live with those as stats!

Thanks for sorting that, very useful.

Seems legit! Thanks for the update.

Have a blast, gang!

Best of luck all!

Obviously I'm not in charge here but my assumption is you're fine to make edits and changes until the deadline.

Character work is going on in the background but in the mean time, here's a few RP samples:

An extract from one of my favourite scenes during which a fey borrows my character's eyes, inadvertently leading to a paladin and an Asmodean priest feeding meat to an adopted baby demonic centipede (not a tavern joke).
Various ruminations on family and what it means during an argument with a minor antagonist.
How not to make friends and influence people.
Some end of adventure wrap-up, which due to GM disappearance ended up being a reasonably fitting end post for the adventure.

And the player questionnaire:
1. What time zone are you in?
GMT (UK)

2. How long have you been playing TTRPGs?
Started with AD&D 2E back in about 1997, with most of my experience during the duration of 3/3.5E and then into Pathfinder, where I'm currently enjoying a renaissance after a lengthy hiatus.

3. What's your favorite part about playing TTRPGs?
The ability to tell stories cooperatively and create interesting characters and worlds. I enjoy worldbuilding outside of characters I'm playing (many years as a Forever GM). And cracking monster skulls is undeniably fun too.

4. What do you expect from this game?
I'm not sure about 'expect' as such, but I would ideally hope for something resembling the above. And fun - that's ultimately why we play.

5. What do you expect out of your fellow players?
Respect, kindness and giving people the benefit of the doubt (online communication can be prone to misunderstandings so I prefer to start with the idea that people are coming from a good place). From there, fun and engaging characters who want to play together.

6. What do you expect out of me?
Again, something resembling the above answers. Fairness, fun and respect might be a reasonable short answer.

7. (If you don't want this to be public, PM me the answer to this one and just note that you did so.) Beyond the obvious (generally stuff already prohibited by Paizo's forum rules,) what are your redlines? Are there any topics, themes, or imagery that you absolutely do not want to see in the game?
Nothing that immediately springs to mind but thanks for asking and being considerate of others.

Dotting for interest as this sounds great. Throwing a few ideas around for the moment and will work something up. Going to be some stiff competition here, I don't envy having to make a decision, GM!

Yay for mirror witches - I'm totally here this archetype.

I just realized I'm building a major aspect of Kiley around something that I might need to get a better feel on.

Am I correct in assuming that the Zhentarim are a bunch of smugglers, slavers, and traffickers that are pretty much scum?

Basically, yeah. =) There's not much in the general 'evil deeds' bracket that they've not turned their hand to over the years.

As mentioned by the GM and a couple of other people, the Forgotten Realms wiki is a very useful source. It can be a little weird reading it though because it's all written in the past tense, whether referring to something contemporary and alive and well or something thousands of years in the past.

@GM of the Moon Thank you, will be in touch. May also need to rejig things slightly as it turns out from a bit of reading that Leira is no longer dead (or never died depending on retconning), but it doesn't change the fundamentals.

@DeathQuaker I know exactly where you're coming from. I'm very much a 2E/3E FR player too but I think that will still set you in good stead. In very broad terms, the 5E Second Sundering undid a lot of things that the 4E Spellplague did (and a few things that were developed in 3E too, such as the Silver Marches collapsed and the Shades and refounded Cormanthyr essentially destroyed each other). Obviously not everything as is exactly as it was, most notably the hundred-year time jump so many NPCs are no longer around, though plenty of notable ones still are, mind. Given WotC's policy of not really focusing on lore any more, many places in the Realms, especially those outside of the Sword Coast, haven't really had an update so there's not necessarily a lot to catch up on.

Specifically to your point, I believe the pantheon was cut down fairly radically for 4E FR but is basically back up to where it used to be for the 5E Realms. The racial pantheons are all there, including Sehanine.

Very interested in this, as a long-time fan it's always a joy to play in the Realms, even if I'm less up on things post-Spellplague.

@GM of the Moon: In terms of classes, are Unchained versions on the table? Specifically I have an idea for a tiefling unchained rogue, moving into inquisitor. She's a worshipper of Leira (goddess of illusions and deceptions, also dead but that's another story...) and is a CN paranoid individual but also a mass of contradictions that she's working through due to her confused upbringing - at heart she wants to like and trust people but is wary of letting her guard down. I am aware of the CN/edgelord worries (which are often understandable) but have explanations and ideas about where she's come from and where I see her going. If you're open to story feats then Crisis of conscience feels like a good fit for her story arc but I also don't want to be all Main Character Energy either. As a player I'm a firm believer that it's a collaborative game, including with the GM.

Thanks for the answers. Yes, that's what I had been looking at - thanks for the flexibility.

I think that should be ok to have things mostly in place for then.

A couple of quick questions: you mention that undines get a swim speed, what is it please? Is there any penalty to land speed as a result of this? Also, are they naturally amphibious or is this something I can (will, if possible) swap in as an alternative racial trait for water affinity?

I've been out tonight but hoping to have a rough mechanical character sheet up tomorrow, even if it will undoubtedly need finessing. And worth flagging, mostly for awareness, that I'm in the UK so my post times may not necessarily correspond to North America. I've never found this to be an issue and sometimes hit a nice overlap for my early mornings with late night west coast.

That could definitely work. And if she previously studied in Light, it adds to the plausibility of her going to investigate recent deeds there.

Hello all, thanks for the invite! Very much looking forward to get stuck into what looks like a great game and world.

My thinking for a character is an undine magus. The quick overview is that she's a renowned warrior and has been fighting in IceFall for a long time, largely as part of a tight-knit trio of close friends. However, this group has disintegrated (not literally) in acrimonious circumstances and she's taken the setbacks personally and considers it a betrayal. Having been put through the wringer with the experience, she has been 'encouraged' to take some shore leave (for want of a better phrase) and has been sent to investigate the happenings in Light, though definitely more as a scout/reporter than an emissary. Earlier history, her magical study and no doubt plenty more will need fleshing out. She's been always been something of a paragon and has largely found things in life to be easy and straightforward in terms of her capabilities and her purpose. At least until recent(ish) events have forced her to confront - or not, she's more doubling down than reflecting - the fact that things can be more complicated than she believes them to be.

As a potential way in I could see a possibility of her having teamed up out of practical circumstance and good sense for mutual aid/defence with Chezarina should they both have found themselves in a dangerous place at the same time. Even with all the likely opinions she has of an ifrit, living as she has for such a long time amongst (almost exclusively?) fellow undine!

Build-wise I'm definitely going the Dex route and will no doubt throw out numerous questions as I work on her!

Working on an aasimar heavens oracle, resident of Heldren and son of a renegade winter witch.

Thanks GM. Totally understand, much easier if it’s a blanket rule. Back to the drawing board then!

Hello, thanks for throwing your hat into the ring to run a game. Thank you also for your honesty, I'm really glad you and your family are all well and that has to come first so please don't give yourself a hard time over it.

I'm definitely interested in this and will start putting something together. An aasimar skald is my first thought but will see how this shapes up as I go.

Edit:
*facepalm* skald wasn't introduced till the Advanced Class Guide which isn't in the listed books. This is going to need some more consideration unless you're willing to consider it?

I started with 2E AD&D in 1996/7, largely setting agnostic. The original Baldur's Gate introduced me to the Realms and it's been my setting of choice ever since. We switched to 3/3.5E when it came out and my career as forever DM began. Spent plenty of time on the old mailing list and the Candlekeep forums back in the day, and played some PBP/PBEM too. Looked at 4E but wasn't taken with it and combined with the heavy investment and familiarity made the logical switch to PF 1E. And absolutely noped out at the destruction of the Realms. Then came a lengthy hiatus as I moved, started jobs, and my old group broke up as we scattered, and I fell off for quite a while. Then with the pandemic I dug out a load of my old books and got hooked back into the Realms, before getting back into a couple of games a while later.
