Background: Shayla came to Diamond Lake as a girl as a refugee with her family fleeing the wars in Alhaster. Because the influx of refugees, they are treated as pariahs often, and her parents always had trouble finding work. Shayla did what she could to help feed her brothers and sisters, pilfering sweets and fruits from stalls, pickpocketing coin from nobles, and eventually breaking and enterings and occasionally a mugging; but this latter always made her feel shame but not enough to keep her from doing it again if it provided food for her siblings.
