Native to Cheliax, Shadwell Wallbloom was born the middle child to eleven siblings and learned at a young age that the easiest way to avoid trouble was to avoid notice. At the age of 10 his parents, frustrated with the draconian laws of their homeland, picked up stakes and headed north to start over in Varisia. Young Shadwell had become so good at blending in, however, that when his family boarded a boat from Korvosa to Sandpoint they left him behind at a dockside meat vendor’s stall. To this day he occasionally wonders if they’ve yet to realize he’s gone. Abandoned on the streets of Korvosa, the half-elf was left to his own devices, which proved considerable. His affinity for avoiding detection, coupled with his keen intellect and inquisitive nature, led to a fairly successful childhood career of petty theft as well as a breadth of lore concerning the customs, legends, and peoples of Varisia. Whether eavesdropping on drunken sailors in port, scholars on their way to and from the libraries, or lords and ladies brunching in outdoor cafes, Shadwell always came away with some useful bit of information. He preferred this solitary life to that of his rambunctious family; he was most comfortable observing others and cataloging his findings, content with his own company. Shadwell was in his mid-teens when he overheard some students from the Acadamae discussing their schoolwork outside a teahouse; he soon waited every day in case they stopped by, eager to hear their talk of arcane principles and mystic formulae which seemed to confound them, but were clear as day to him. He soon realized that even with the mere snippets of information he overheard, his grasp of the material exceeded their own, and resolved to gain entrance to the Acadamae himself. Shadwell’s intellect allowed him to pass the school’s entry exam despite his lack of preparation, and his small hoard of pilfered coins paid for his entry fees. His first few years were easier than those of most of his peers; when it came time to assign the various menial tasks to the newcomers, he was often overlooked, and he made a habit of spending much of his time in a disused closet. Once the proper magical training began, he showed great promise in his illusion lessons, and soon took most of his classes in the Hall of Lies. However, while he excelled at magical theory and execution, he lacked any affinity for the more subtle personal aspects of his chosen specialty; while he could disguise himself perfectly as any of his classmates, he couldn't act like them, and while he could spot the flaws in the cleverest of illusions, he couldn't see through the flimsiest of lies. As his studies progressed, Shadwell became more and more anxious around others, growing to dread interactions with his professors and fellow students, becoming more and more reclusive as he longed for the anonymity of his prior life. Then came the day of his final test in conjuration. Exhausted after hours of grueling tests in both the theoretical and the practical, Shadwell gave an incorrect answer to a basic question; upon the harsh remonstration of his proctor, the young man snapped. Spouting personal curses and shocking profanities at his proctor, his classmates, and the Acadamae as a whole in a meltdown of epic proportions, he barely escaped with his life and was officially banned from the Acadamae. Furious with himself and the Acadamae, and still filled with a lust to know the secret workings of the cosmos and the true nature of reality, he resolved he would receive all the knowledge and training he had expected. Falling back on the skills of his youth in thievery and practical disguise, he snuck his way back into the school and set up in his old hiding place. He has dwelt in his broom closet for the past thirty-odd years, secretly attending classes and lectures, reading through and copying any spellbooks or theses left improperly secured, and eavesdropping on the lives of the academy’s students and teachers. Appearance & Personality:
Shadwell is short and slight in stature, with fine but plain features; he cultivates an androgynous appearance, and is usually disguised as a human commoner. He prefers to dress in in simple clothes of beige and/or grey, avoiding anything bright in color or ostentatious in style.
Suffering from severe social anxiety, Shadwell hasn't spoken to another humanoid creature as himself since the end of his enrollment at the Acadamae. Though capable of speaking with his familiar, he most often thinks at Centurion without realizing that he hasn't said anything aloud. Centurion simply knows his master as a man of very few words and, being a centipede, doesn't mind the quiet. The prospect of having to interact with other people, and wizards at that, is thus far the most daunting part of the Terrapin's offer.
