About Scylax "The Silver Demon"

Character Sheet:
SCYLAX'S CHARACTER SHEET

Background:

Scylax was, at one time, a farmer content in his life. He had his farm, the love of a beautiful wife, and a young child on the way. He was financially as sound as a farmer could be and enjoyed toiling in his fields all day, returning home at night to a delicious dinner prepared by his loving wife. He would spend the dark hours playing his Lute for his wife while she would sing softly to the child in her womb.

Whenever Scylax would go to town to trade his crops, he would pay a visit to his childhood friend, Dieter Chesiks, the Captain of the local guard. They would meet at the Tavern at night and drink deep of tankards of mead while listening to the whimsical tales of another friend of theirs, the Bard Killian Durish. It is only these two men who know "Scylax" is not the farmer's name, but that is neither here or now.

One day, as he was returning to his home from a particularly lucrative trip selling crops, Scylax came to a thrashed path coming onto the road and continuing further down the path. The packed earth was churned as if someone had taken his plough and strapped it to a bear who wildly tried breaking loose of it. As Scylax's gaze followed the torn-up trail, he realized it was heading directly for his farm. With a fresh panic, Scylax tore off down the road towards home, abandoning his cart and mule.

Scylax ran on until he came close enough to his house to see the gore that once was his wife and unborn child. He collapsed in a heap on the dusty earth and wept for long minutes. He would've wept longer, had he not been attacked by whatever had still been lurking in the house. Scylax's sobs had drown out the noise of the beast approaching, not that he would've cared much to flee.

Scylax awoke in a church, being tended over by a rather attractive and seductively dressed priestess. She explained to him he had been brought into Calistria's Temple for lack of space in any other church. They were doing the best they could, but his wounds were many and severe. He had been clawed across the face, chest, back, and legs. While he would survive, he would bear severe scars for the rest of his life.

Scylax spent weeks recovering enough to be able to walk. During this time, his friends Dieter and Killian visited him regularly, but something had changed in their once-happy friend. Something dark and brooding had taken over. The priestesses had noticed this trait in their charge as well. Had anyone else known that his deceased wife was more than just a memory influencing his dark moods, they may have wondered further what had actually happened. His wife, Verma, was visible to him and only him, as a spirit who had refused to go quietly into the grave.

During one evening meal, the head priest came to Scylax with news. He told the scarred man that he and his wife had been attacked by a monster of some sort, though no other information could be determined in the investigation. He went on to console the welling anger of the young farmer by asking one simple question:

"What are you going to do about it?"

The young farmer's eyes glossed over and in an emotionless tone he responded with surprising ferocity.

"I'm going to do the same to it…"

The head priest smiled, content with the answer. He went on to offer something unique to the boy. Training. IF the boy would serve the church in seeking out these sort of creatures and removing their taint from the world. He offered him training as a Sin Eater.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been 20 years since his joining the ranks of Sin Eaters. The scarred Monster Hunter had now been known as Scylax for just as long. He had hunted monsters with whip in one hand and sickle in the other for decades. He had ritualistically been eating Sins of monsters, evil men, and evil creatures for a tedious amount of time. But his resolve for ridding the world of evil and preventing another poor sod from his fate had never been sharper or more pure.

Over his years as a Monster Hunter, he had seen and done a great many things. He had been accepted into his training by High Priest Chesko Dithers, a mature Elf who held a passion for ridding the world of evil. Father Dithers took Scylax under his wing and knew something was special about his new Sin Eater when Scylax told him of his wife haunting him. Such things happen for a reason and the fact that she was influencing Scylax to get revenge on monster kind led Father Dithers to believe Scylax's appointment to be a divine mandate. Father Dithers cautioned Scylax to keep his spirit wife a secret from anyone else in the Church for such things could be misconstrued as malign.

When Scylax was 31, he had been hired to find and hunt a creature of the night. A vampire. No one knew anything other than a night walker had been plaguing a local village every new evening. Every night Scylax returned to the village, fruitless in his pursuit with a new undead to put down before they could escape. As the weeks wore on and the trail bore no additional information, Scylax was becoming increasingly fatigued, worn, and less welcome in the village. It was then that a beautiful woman showed up at the inn where he was staying, all charm, hips, and perfume. She took an interest in the Sin Eater, who didn't bother to sense her purity. She seemed to enchant him completely. After several hours of talking and flirting, they retired to his room where they made love. Afterwards, Scylax felt odd, like something was wrong. It hadn't occurred to him before, but he hadn't seen Vesma's spirit that night at all. As he stood at the open window, getting fresh air, the woman on the bed began to laugh sadistically. He turned to face her and for the first time sensed the evil within her. It was the first time he'd felt fear since his first monster hunt. The woman lifted off the bed and hovered in the air, her shroud of living beauty falling away to reveal the vampire beneath. Scylax immediately dashed for his crossbow, but he was thrown against the wall with enough force to knock out an ordinary man. As he groggily gazed up from the ground, he heard her say he was her plaything and he would be hearing from her soon. Then the world faded to black and silence ensued. The next morning he fled the village before anyone awoke. It was his most cowardly moment, but the monster hunter could not defeat the vampire and he knew it. She has stalked him with her influence and minions ever since.

The Silver Demon

Scylax wears a pure silver ornate face mask depicting a snarling demon. It has sockets for his eyes and the mouth is shaped into a grimace that gives his own mouth an open gap to allow for unimpeded speaking so as to not muffle his voice. The mask is held in place by two massive ram horns that begin on the forehead of the mask and curl over the top and at the back of his head, securing the mask in place.

Character Goals:

Spoiler:

1. (Long Term) Discover what creature killed his wife and unborn child.
2. (Short Term)

Significant NPCs:

Spoiler:

1. General Dieter Chesiks - Dieter has known Scylax since birth. They were neighbors and best friends growing up. While Scylax was content becoming a Farmer, Dieter craved a more active role in life. He became Captain of the local Guard at a very early age due to his ambition, tactical mind, combat prowess, and a good amount of luck. In the midst of Scylax's Sin Eater training, Dieter joined the Althamarian Army and quickly rose through the ranks. Today, he is one of the most successful and best loved Generals the kingdom has. He has utilized Scylax's services on more than one occasion to put down some monster or another that proved too much for his men. They maintain a close relationship to this day. While Dieter knows Scylax's true name, he never uses it for two reasons - First, out of respect for professional courtesy. Second, because the man he grew up with died 20 years ago.

2. Killian Durish the Bard - Killian grew up alongside Dieter and Scylax as their clever, humorous, and musically inclined friend. He hated the drudgery of everyday labor and as any clever man would, found another way to make his living. Killian picked up a pipe as a child and never looked back. He quickly learned every instrument he was handed and even had a talented voice. Couple that with charm and wits and voila, instant Bard. He was the one who taught Scylax how to play the Lute, in fact. When Dieter and Scylax left the town to further their professions, Killian decided it was his time to leave as well. He became a traveling Bard and has been very successful. With new adventures came new ideas for new songs and with new songs came a good deal of fame. He is now one of the most respected Bards in Althamar.

3. Father Chesko Dithers, High Priest of Calistria - Father Dithers is Scylax's handler and confessor within Calistria's Church. He keeps constant communication with Scylax through messenger and issues information, leads, support, and orders to the Sin Eater. He is not a human, however. He is an Elf who appears younger than Scylax, but is MUCH older. He is calm for a Priest of Calistria, but can become quite frightening if his ire is rattled. He personally oversees the inclusion of new Inquisitors, but is partial to his Sin Eaters as he feels they do the most good in the world. Scylax is not only his charge, but his friend. Scylax values Father Dithers' council highly, verging on the edge of fanaticism.

4. Vesma Harbough, Wife of Scylax - Though Vesma is deceased, she haunts Scylax. Not in a malicious way, however. She has become a spirit who appears only to Scylax and speaks to him. Though she is not malicious, she is angry. Having been violently murdered, she shares Scylax's hatred of Monsters and may actually be the reason Scylax has become the Sin Eater he is today.

5. Countess Udra, Night Mistress - Countess Udra is a vampire of some power. 12 years ago, when Scylax first met her, she seduced him into bed with her. When her identity was revealed as the monster he had been seeking, he tried to destroy her. However, she was far too strong for him to defeat. She took great pleasure in his feeble attempts. But more so from having tricked him into committing such a carnal act with an evil creature. She let him live for no other reason than to torment him through her minions and influence over the years in the attempts to wear him down until she could revel in his eventual destruction. Such is the way she finds her eternal entertainment.

Character Secrets:

Spoiler:

1. Scylax's true name is Derval Harbough
2. Scylax has committed a carnal act with a vampire, punishable by excommunication from his order.
3. Scylax's wife and unborn child were murdered by Countess Udra. (He is NOT aware)

Character Memories:

Spoiler:

1. His wife's murder. Obviously.
2. A particular failed hunt that resulted in the destruction of a village. He has never forgiven himself for failing.
3. Having once been required to kill and eat the sins of a possessed child left him distraught for months. His emotions after that grew colder.
