Background: It can be said that in a democracy that even among equals there are those who are of a different station. As a son of foresters he had not had many opportunities to reach a higher station. Even in the meritocracy that is modern Andora, it took the Benedict name to open doors for him and get him the place that he deserved in the Army. Most recruits serve their two years and then move on to other persuits, Santoval had a goal, to become an Eagle Knight. While he had the spark of leadership and wielded his blade with skill against the enemies of Andora, it was the Benedict name that got him the promotion to Sergeant and his first platoon.

It was on that first mission that he was assigned a new troop to backfill an empty position in his squad, a young lad by the name of Menadian. Highstrung and pigheaded the lad fell asleep at watch and allowed a kobold raid into the camp. Two good soldiers died in their sleep before the alarm was raised. Unfortunately Menadian survived. In the flickering torchlight of the ruined camp, Santoval lost his temper and struck the boy once, nearly killing him.

The son of Augustana’s mayor is not to be humbled or punished by any mere citizen however. Santoval’s discharge papers arrived no more than a fortnight later, ink still wet. The messenger informed Santoval that he was being done a favor by certain interested parties, and that he should leave the country as soon as possible as Radas Menadian, mayor of Augustana, was interested in extracting his pound of flesh for the near death and certain disfigurement (a very broken nose) of his son.

His purpose lost, his family and nation closed to him, Santoval searches for a purpose to latch on to.
