Spoiler:
Rowena was born into a notable line of Calistria priestesses. However, Rowena’s parents, the then famous elven priestress Merisiella (“Just call me Siella!”) and her hunky human convert Bob (just Bob), came to ruin as they attempted to steal and sell Calistria’s only elven-forged statue, “The Lady who thieves and deceives.” They fled for isolated villages of Varisia, performing small “miracles” for money, travelling by night to escape indignant Calistria orders. Siella and Bob were forced to settle into a small gypsy village when Siella was expecting. Upon the birth of her daughter, Siella was said to have handed the child to the old midwife so she could “finally dance in piece without that thing kicking me!” Rowena’s early childhood was frequented by moments like this – her father going out to “buy some milk” only to have spent it on gypsy girls, her mother dancing that same Calistria dance to enact vengeance.

Rowena felt detached from the Calistria faith and her parents, preferring to listen to the wise midwife who helped birth her. “Pharasma, my dear,” the woman would say “is the one true Goddess. There’s none of this…dancing…this petty thievery.” Rowena was drawn to the woman’s words, which were calming, if non-emotive, as compared to Siella’s midnight wailings. Maybe there was something to this Pharasma…Her musing, however, were cut short as Siella and Bob grew impatient with their tiny gypsy city. One day in a bought of rage, Siella decided to start life afresh, taking on a new name and casting aside her priestly past. “After all,” Siella argued, “isn’t feigning apathy about Calistria the best deception I could perform in her name?” Of course, Rowena could not be disguised so easily. She was already showing signs of strong holiness – uncontrollable visions of a shadowy goddess, sleepwalking, night terrors about the undead. And for that reason, it was decided that Rowena would be sent to a secretive Calistria order for formal priestess training. Soon thereafter, 11-year old Rowena rode her neighbor’s sow cart, alone, to a large and far away city.

She spent the next 15 years learning how to serve Calistria. She fumbled through Calistria’s ritual dances, and struggled to understand the “art” of thievery. And despite concentrating her energy on fulfilling Calistria’s wishes, Rowena was unable to focus her holiness. She was still plagued with terrible nightmares and sleepwalking. Her dreams swirled around the dead who were not at rest, and the terrible creatures who seemed to defy death. Her dreams came to a head during a particularly violent nightmare about grey demons. According to the students, Rowena suddenly sat up in her cot, screaming “BE GONE SCOURGE OF THE DEAD!” She whipped out her old and worn dagger, which always gave her a sense of security while sleeping, and threw it at the nearest cot. The next morning, Rowena was exiled from the Order, having scared the resident priestess’s face.
Rowena searched for purpose in the city’s dirty streets. When she wasn’t begging for bread, she crept into expensive bookshops, researching what her dreams meant. One day she came across a small passage in a gimmicky paperback called, “Holy moly,Might I be Holy?” that seemed to describe her afflictions. According to the book, contempt for the undead and for those who defy life and death are particular to priests and priestesses of Pharasma. Priests respected the properly dead, “but Pharasmans aren’t all doom and gloom! These shadowy folk flock to healing and midwifery when not shaking their fists at abominations…” Rowena suddenly remembered the old midwife in Varisia. After much search, Rowena tracked down the small gypsy village. The old woman was still there, but could only offer Rowena a holy symbol. “Pharasma comes when death or birth comes. You will feel her when they are near.”

Rowena spent the next five years traveling Varisia, training herself as a priestess. It was not difficult; life and death abounded. Rowena became a keen judge of death and when it might occur. She worshipped Pharasma by performing rituals for abandoned corpses on the mountain side. Her nightmares of demons became stronger, but Rowena began to find ways of protecting herself against the demons; she focused her energy into a kind of “sanctuary” against them. While Rowena knew these dreams were just dreams, she couldn’t help but feel something was prophetic about them.

One night, Rowena had a dream about a capped traveler on a horse. Smelling death, Rowena ran after the traveler, demanding to know who was dying. The traveler turned his horse around slowly, sliding the hood of his cape down to reveal a faceless demon. A cold cackle escaped from its scaly head, from where Rowena could not tell. Its horse reared-up, and fled in the direction of Mendev. A calm, cool voice whispered in her ear “Follow him…fight for me, Rowena…”She headed out the same night. As Rowena neared Mendev, she began asking locals about demons. Each person she spoke with shuddered and told terrible tales about stray demons dragging people away. One woman told a harrowing tale about her infant daughter being snatched into a dark abyss by an infernal creature. At that moment Rowena decided to devote her life to fighting these demons. She found one of Mendev’s city, Kenabres, and rented out a small room while she gathered more information from locals. Demons were nothing new for Kenabres. In fact, this was their 4th crusade against demons. However, Kenabres' forces were steadily dwindling and they needed good priests to help with the cause. Rowena spent the next couple of months casting demons out and performing rites for those who died in battle.
