Backstory:

Riley does not know anything about the circumstances of his birth. As a matter of fact, his earliest memories involve shoveling animal dung for Hannibal’s Amazing and Stupendous Circus. He also has no idea how he became the property of Persius Gregorius Hannibal. All he knows is that his childhood and adolescent years were spent as the corrupt circus owner’s “employee”.

Riley was a talented child. His natural speed and dexterity were obvious to all. It did not take long for word of his giftings to reach the ear of Hannibal. The very same day Riley began his mentorship in the art of thievery. He would shovel dung and feed the animals during the day and pick Circus goers pockets at night. All in all, he made a great little employee. His training progressed and he began working with the acrobats and trapeze artists in his early teens. By fourteen, he was one of the stars of the show. People would come from near and far to see young Riley perform a quadruple somersault from the high trapeze into small pile of hay over 60 feet below. With the progression of his skill in acrobatics, also came a progression of his skill in thievery. Riley and other talented acrobats began breaking into buildings and cracking safes for their boss. The circus would travel from town to town only to provide a new, fertile field for Hannibal and his acrobats to plunder.

Life in the circus was bitter sweet. Riley enjoyed the cheers and fame that came with his performances, but abhorred the life of crime he was forced to lead. Poor returns on the group’s late evening activities would earn the thieves severe beatings from their boss and his right hand man, a large Hobgoblin named Tiny.

Everything changed though when a young human girl was added to the acrobats. Riley loved Lily from the moment their eyes met. Spending several months as her mentor only made it worse. The two became close and soon fell in love. Lily was the first “good” person that Riley had ever known. She made him want to be a better man. He worked hard to please her as they gracefully entertained the masses on the trapeze. Once again though, the relationship was bitter sweet. While Riley would go out late to rob local banks and jewelry stores, Lily would be prostituted to the city’s noblemen by Hannibal. It was a painful way of life for them both, but a life they did not know how to escape.

It was Lily’s idea to run away while they were in the city of Egorian in Cheliax. The two planned it out. They would wait until early morning and then meet outside the city gates. Riley, wearied from his performance and a long night of thievery, made it to the spot on time. He waited for over an hour for Lily, but she never arrived. He returned to the circus to find her lying naked on the floor of her tent with her throat slit from ear to ear. Riley collapsed and held his love. It was too late. Lily had been dead for over an hour.

City officials, who had been tipped off by Persius, showed up to question Riley. Fearful for his life, the young acrobat escaped through the city, but not before ripping Lily’s necklace and locket from her neck. He quickly stowed away on a trade vessel and traveled to Absalom.

His next few years were spent in revelry and hedonism. Everything he had lived for was gone. He attempted to kill himself through drinking, fighting, and gambling. It was at the height of his self-destructive behavior that he had a chance encounter with a swashbuckler name, Lauirreux Montpierre. Riley had been caught cheating at cards at a pub in the docks and was beaten nearly to death. The pirate took him aboard his vessel, the Storm’s Warning, and nursed the half elf to health. For some reason Lauirreux took pity on the gambler. Over several weeks at sea, the two grew close. The swashbuckler taught Riley the art of swordplay, armed with an exquisite curve blade that had been passed through his family for generations. The two were as close as brothers.

Within a year, Riley had become the first mate of the ship. The next few years were spent plundering merchant vessels along the rivers of of the Inner Sea Region. It was a dangerous, but happy time in the acrobat’s life. That was until they finally met their match. In a raid near Almas, they were ambushed. They were outnumbered nearly ten to one. Riley and Lauirreux fought valiantly side by side, but soon were overtaken. Riley watched as his brother was cut down. He attempted to rescue Lauirreux, but once again he was too late. The swashbuckler passed his sword to Riley and nodded as the light left his eyes. Stricken once again in pain and fearful for his life, Riley fled.

He traveled for months and ended up in the city of Cassomir. Riley feared trouble was on his trail from his time with Montpierre. Riley cut his long hair and signed up to join a merchant caravan. Once again trouble followed him though as the Sheriff of Belhaim seized the caravan. Riley thought that the sheriff may have recognized him. He was greatly relieved when they arrested the caravan leader instead.

Today, Riley sits in The Wise Pipe, a cozy Inn, sipping on rum and planning his next move. He is a broken man with eyes full of pain. He gives a curtly smile to those who acknowledge him and attempts to remain “unseen”.

Questionnaire:

* What does your character value most in life? The value of life with a keen realization of how fragile it is. True love-whether that be through romance or friendship.

* What are their immediate goals? Survival...pleasure. He is lost. He has no goal beside those. He is at the end of his rope.

* What are their future goals? If he believed in a happy afterlife, it would be to seek an eternity with those he loved and lost. Without that hope…to make it to the next day.

* What are your character's most obvious blessings/strengths/aptitudes? His greatest strengths are his skills: acrobatics, thievery, swordplay. Besides those, maybe his heart? He is fiercely loyal if he makes a friend and wants to bring happiness to those who deserve it.

* What are your character's most obvious flaws/quirks/foibles/weaknesses? He has been injured. He guards his heart and has trouble trusting others. He has a fierce temper and will not stand for weak people to be mistreated. This is a response to his childhood more than a belief in doing good. He enjoys his alcohol and seeks other ways to escape the pain that is evident in his icy blue eyes. This often leads to self-destructive behavior. He has no fear of death and sees it as the final escape from his pain.

* Are they any conflicts which may arise from your character's past? If yes, what form will they take and from whom? He was as a pirate and accused murderer. Though neither have followed him to his current location, he is fearful it will someday catch up to him.

* Does your character have a criminal past/record? Yes. See above. No real record, but he does not know that.

* Is there any race, creed, alignment, religion or the like which your character is highly prejudiced for or against? Only powerful people who hurt those weaker than them. He is an atheist and has trouble understanding those who put their faith in the Gods. He doesn’t judge them. He just doesn’t understand them.

* Does your character have any significant rational or irrational fears, phobias or paranoias? Losing Lily’s locket. Being imprisoned (caged). He will die before he is arrested.

--->*a) What, if anything, would it take for your character to overcome this? To learn to love another female and come to grips with his past. To see himself for who he really is.

--->*b) How does your character react when this fear/phobia/paranoia manifests itself? He becomes violently angry and defensive if there is a threat to his locket. He keeps it around his neck at all times.

* Does your character have any unusual or nervous mannerisms/ticks, which appear when talking, thinking, afraid, under stress, or when embarrassed? He sometimes gives a witty comeback during an awkward conversation to avoid revealing his true self. He feels for the locket hundreds of times a day to make sure it is still on his neck. He touches it for good luck.
