Background: The only requirement is that you answer these five questions:
The smirking boy was the stereotypical teen, one of dozens who have sat there, full of himself and invulnerable until he wasn’t. He sat on the stool like so many others, purposely distracting himself to avoid the pursed disapproving lips of the caseworker. The caseworker glanced at her charge and his minder who was just as purposely blocking the door. This one was a slippery streetfighter, youthful vigor coupled with a quickness and reckless disregard to his health. The caseworker slowly and deliberately prepares some more ink, sets her notebook just so, and smoothes down its pages before dipping the inkpen into the well and very precisely tapping it to remove the excess three times. Tap. Tap. Tap.
The woman regarded Ren Cooper over half-moon spectacles with a raised eyebrow.
["I have no doubt that Professor Togren has informed you that you need to be perfectly honest with me, Mr.Cooper."
The smirk deepens with a not so stifled cough, followed by a quick side-eye to his minder blocking the door.
"So, of course, know that I am your friend and confidante."
The forced smile that made crinkles at the corner of the caseworker's upturned mouth was well practiced and clearly did not reach her eyes. At this comment, Ren did a mocking disbelieving chuckle and actually did look at her as well as a calculating appraisal of his guard.
Sarcasm dripping, “Clearly” was Ren’s only verbal acknowledgment, although his minder did tense up. They had removed his possessions and emptied his pockets prior to this meeting; yet his smile was genuine as his fingers played the brooch in his pocket that he managed to rip off his guard during a brief struggle.
"Let us begin with..."
Five Questions:
How did your parents die?:
*Blink* Blank stare. Flashback~They pissed off the wrong family or something. (Although I found that out later.) Fortunately, I was being punished for stealing dessert before dinner and sent to woodshed to await punishment. Everything and anything wrong in that house was my fault. So there I was sitting in the dark shed not at all looking forward to my papa providing more admirable examples of fatherhood, when the crickets went real quiet of a sudden. Never saw my papa, but did see a bevy of shadows converge on my house. Something told me to keep quiet and make myself as small as possible. When the screaming started, oh god, the screams. I hightailed it out of there. Looked back only once to see a glow of fire above the trees.
Recovery.
Grey rock this hack. “You know what happened, it is no secret. They were caught in that ol’tavern fire a couple of years ago.”
"And what were their names?”
Dead eye stare, but he was practiced for this. “Renald and Syl Cooper”
The woman's forced smile returned.
"Anything else? You sure they didn’t go by any other name? None of the Taldean Coopers here claim you as kin not to mention they lack the Chelaxian heritage so obvious in your demeanor.” The woman's gaze was just as disbelieving as Ren’s earlier, but she knew she hit a mark as his pupils dilated. “I don’t care if Prof Torgren told her everything, Why ask if they know the truth. Or did he? Oh my skin and hair. Calm yourself down. Maybe they got nothing.”
Making a point of looking her in the eye, daring her to prove otherwise, “Nope.”
His guard flexed his fist and his body language indicated an offer to work him over, a subtle shake of her head said not yet. Ren caught this exchange, leading to another smirk.
The woman showed no reaction as her inkpen moved on the paper. Scritch, scritch, scratch. She glanced up with her pencil thin eyebrow raised as the silence competed with the lies to fill this room.
"Now..."
What is your greatest fear?:
Puzzlement painted his face, “Like you mean getting caught by city watch? Again?” NuhHuh, not gonna hand this gunt the keys to this secret. Lessee if I can find hers… “Spiders.” “Sssssnakes.” “Finding out you are my mother.”
"What?" The woman's eyes snapped to the guard
Still watching her but thumbing his guard, “This one telling about all his sexual conquests in the barn” *POW!*Left hook delivered.
Ren was knocked off the stool and into glorious stunned silence. Sadistic satisfaction suffused the caseworker’s and the guard’s face. “Let’s try again, shall we? What is your greatest fear?”
The overjoyed guard, taking this as his cue for more thuggery, forcibly picked up the boy by his hair and belt as Ren’s hands and feet scrambled for purchase before once again putting him in a sitting position. Wilting under the very physical presence of the hulking guard who maintained a grip on the back of his neck,"My greatest fear...is that one day, those who burned my parents would come hunting me.”
“Is your name still Ren Cooper?” His so-called minder prompted with a tightened vise grip, but still Ren simply gave one angry silent nod as blood trickled down his split lip.
Scritch, scritch, scratch.
“I see. What is your greatest wish?”
Spitting a hock of blood onto the paper the caseworker was inking, “Respect and admiration. I deserve it.” Ren braced for another round of frolicking fun from his guard.
The caseworker stood up in disgust. Regaining her composure a tad faster than the minder, “Stop. No more marks.” Mocking sarcastic sympathy flooded her voice, “oh dear boy, is that what you seek? Perhaps something like this? You are such a big strong man, so wise to the world and pockets overflowing with riches. Why even your clothes are made from the finest sackclothe. Perfect for wiping your own bloody snot. I admire your offer of your shirt. Such a gentleman,…remove it.”
“What?” And with that the guard simply drew a knife and cut his shirt right down the back, handing it over to the case worker to dab up the blood. But then the guard’s grip lessened significantly as he took in the long-healed whipping scars decorating the boy’s back.
The woman commanded tersely. "There will be no further outbursts of that nature. Respect and admiration are earned not given. You’ve done nothing yet to deserve it. Professor Torgen will see that you do indeed man up. He is a fine one for that.
An icy chill calm settled on Ren’s heart. What? Why did Prof Torgren take such an interest in me? It cannot be…
The woman slowly lowered herself back into her chair, the now bloody sack cloth shirt tossed into his lap, her eyes nailing him to his stool.
"Hmph," she grunted and dipped her pen into the inkwell once again. Tap, tap, tap "Let's continue. Since you are now enrolled at the University, you may have heard of some of the fields of study and instructors...”
Who is your least favorite scholar?:
But Ren did not hear the question, mind still reeling. For the first time, Ren answered without even thinking although it still rang true. He was quite flustered.
"Professor Togren..."
The woman stopped writing and looked at Ren with a raised anticipatory eyebrow and asked,"....and why is it Professor Togren?”
Ren’s paled complexion, he made a point of avoiding any of his former haunts from his childhood. His father hired him to private tutoring after he got kicked out of school for the umptheenth time. He was the one most likely to recognize him and a petty vindictive tutor who could do no wrong when it came to teaching the designated family scapegoat. As the memories connected, his complexion went from pale to flushed with humiliations heaped upon him. There was one lesson Professor Torgren taught him that he would never forget. He had it in for me. His weekly reports to my father always ended up with me in the woodshed and me promising to do better(or not get caught.)Unless it was “Yes Sir”, any answer he provided, was the wrong one. And now he is once again in my life, affecting my future. He went back to the tried and true snarky routine, “Think he bathes once a month and stinks worse than downwind of the tannery.”
The woman shook her head and snorted, putting pen to paper once again. Scritch, scritch, scratch. She was clearly not impressed, just another posturing bravado with no substance nor style.
The caseworker finished off whatever she was writing with several flourishes then produced a cloth to clean the pen nib, detach it, stopper the inkwell, and roll the tools up in a leather pouch. All the while blowing softly across the page to help dry the ink. Adding her summary to the others found within. Once done, she closed the notebook and looked up at Ren.
"That is all I needed, Mr. Ren Cooper. Now your minder will escort your to the Uni dorms. For the sake of Respect and Admiration, try not to trouble your Minder anymore. Do you have any questions for me?" The woman's eyes clearly indicated the proper answer, and she barely waited for Ren to shake his head as allowed by the guard before departing the room.
Grabbing his torn shirt, Ren a showy effort to fold the scraps as well as he could while muffling the keys swiped from the Guard. Wiping his face clean, his lip stung just enough to wipe the beginnings of another smirk, “I wonder what these keys unlock? And how much I can get for the brooch” With a firm grip and shove, the guard escorted Ren out and to the Uni, both keeping an uncharacteristic silence.
5)My question for you: Why did Samurai Jack never clue in to Akuu's color scheme and attack him right away?
