Protection from Chaos/Evil/Good/Law
Raul was born into the Assassin's guild, his parents average members. His father was wholeheartedly dedicated to the guild, but his mother was more the religious type and often tempered some of the loose cannons. Raul began his training when he could walk. He always excelled in the fighting side of things, and even showed promise in some magics, but 80% of what the guild was doing, stealth, subterfuge, and charm, he had absolutely none of. The superiors weren't thrilled by it, but he was born into the guild and even they just needed muscle sometimes so they let it go.
Another thing Raul had to grow up with was his monthly fits. It didn't take long, even for a child, to figure out he was born as a lycanthrope. Every full moon his mother would cradle him until the fur shrank away and the teeth dulled, and eventually when he got old enough his dad began staying up with him those long nights. His father explained to him how he found out he was a carrier of the curse, but managed to suppress it within himself. He tried to explain the positives of being born with it instead of acquiring it later, and how much easier it is to control. Persuasive as always, he convinced Raul it was a gift and began schooling him how to use his canine powers to his advantage.
When Raul came of age he was sent out on his first mission. He wasn't told much of the details, but there was somebody trying to create his own set of organized crime within the city. This new group had been a thorn in their side, so they decided to make a permanent solution to the problem. Little did they know it was all a ploy. While most of the muscle was being sent out on a mission, the guild was struck in the back. Treasures stolen, property destroyed, reputation tarnished, and lives lost. The hit squad came back to see the damage, horrible but the only irreplaceable thing lost was the devoted guild members. As Raul was picking up some of the heavier items, his old friend and sparring partner Logan slowly walked across the broken glass to him. Raul took one look at his tear streaked face and knew.
Raul ran to the temple of Pharasma, already knowing what was there but still shocked nonetheless. The entire temple was on fire, the local watch failing to quell the flames. Raul shoves his way through and ran inside, completely ignoring the danger and shouts of warning. He searched through the crumbling, flaming building, holding a sleeve in an attempt to breath. With clouded vision and smoke filled lungs he wasn't paying attention to the ceiling above him, and a beam broke loose, falling down on him. He jumped at the last moment, but landed face down in a pile of hot cinders. He thrashed in pain, but held a hand over his ruined face and continued searching until he found his parents bodies near the altar. They had enough wounds to kill a troll, his father's corpse shielding his mother's in vain. Before the bodies were burned away Raul took off his fathers seal and his mothers necklace, and then he saw them. Two neat holes in her neck. He checked his father, who had the same wound, and then he knew. Vampires. Filled with grief, pain, and anger, Raul took these trinkets and fled the building before the rest of it crumbled on him.
Raul spent months locked away, his peers believing him in mourning. Mourn he did, but he spent much of the time researching into the undead, the modern and ancient vampires, his mothers religion, and his parents connections. His greatest discovery was the rivalry between his father and a vampire cult. This was confirmed by the discovery of silver weapons, wooden stakes, and holy water hidden in his fathers study. At the end of the third month Logan came to his door, insisting on taking him out. Raul continued to tell him off, eventually barking angrily and gesturing at the door. There was a thud, then silence. Worried, Raul opened the door to find Logan on the ground, fast asleep. Raul looked at his hand, then smiled, realizing what he did. And what he is to do now.
Raul brought his knowledge and new powers to the superiors, but they shunned his advances for resources and team members to help him. They saw revenge, not justice in his quest, so they stopped his advances. Outraged and dejected that his life mentors would spurn the vengeance for his parents, he cursed them in front of all his peers and swore he would find his vengeance, with or without them. The room grew deathly quiet, and the superiors whispered amongst themselves for a moment. Then one stood, announcing he was banned from the guild and all his connections and resources severed. Denial turned to sorrow, sorrow to acceptance...and acceptance to hatred. He turned and left without another word.
Raul now freelances, doing everything from simple hired muscle to tracking down and killing targets. He has familiarized himself with how to kill all manners of vampires, from the regular ones that die like men to the powerful ones that need a wooden stake and holy water. He often runs into conflict with the assassins guild, who very much disapprove of his work. Although Raul still tries to talk to Logan if he can find him.
Work has been hard recently, jobs either being non-existent or impossible to complete. He was brooding and half drunk in a tavern when he was approached with a job offer. The offer was odd, more research than anything but they wanted somebody on their team who could swing a sword. Normally Raul turns down weird jobs from strangers, but his coin purse was light and his head was spinning so he accepted. He was left with an address, a name, and a word. Gunpowder.
Appearance & Personality
Raul stands head and shoulders above the average man, his physical form very imposing. He has long wavy, light brown hair with hints of red that matches his beard, which is mostly goatee. He has a long, crooked nose that's bent different directions, showing it has been broke any number of times. His most identifying feature is a large burn scar that runs from the left side of his lip over his eye, disturbingly showing almost the entire eye as if it has been surgically opened.
Despite Raul's dark childhood he retains a fairly friendly demeanor if you're on his good side. He drinks, laughs, plays cards, and sometimes brawls at the loudest tavern whenever he reaches a new town. He always likes to hear the news, and often visits the smith to see how progress in metalworking is going. An interesting feature of his personality is that he treats women like distant figures, knowing how his appearance shocks them and doing his best to keep his head down.

Raul looks at them each in turn. "Darvan, he was an explorer before he joined the legion. He wanted to map the underground tunnels. Samuel and Tournel were brothers who sought to end the reign of the dark gaunts and joined us for that exact reason. Marius wanted to protect the city from raiders, he lost his sister to a wild elf tribe and didn't want anybody else to feel that pain. Pent was going to make enough money to buy his family's freedom." His lip twitches. "Gandrosh was a bit of a prick, but he tried to keep the others from abusing their power."
