Description: Kani, is like many of his race, small and wiry with bushy hair and the faint wisps of facial hair. When he is in human towns, he normally wears a baggy moss green kimono and loose cotton pants the color of rich fertile earth. When he leaves human settlements, though, he wears a suit of bone armor, embellished with little animal skulls, beads, and feathers tied on with small pieces of cord.

Personality: Kani is happy and boastful most of the time...he enjoys drinking and telling stories of his and his ancestor’s greatness, of the excellence of his home region and how he is destined to return his people there. He has actually adapted to living in the human community to a greater degree than he had thought possible, and this disturbs him slightly.

Background: Kani’s people were driven from their home, a high forest and crater lake up in the mountains, when a powerful oni invaded their land. Several of the more powerful men of his clan set off to take the land back but were killed leaving the clan to fend for itself. The Orchid-Tongued people were forced to move down close to the human settlements. As some of the younger members of the clan reached adulthood, they have started to head out to seek fortunes, skills, and power that can be used to return their people to their rightful homes.

Kani’s outlook: Using the world of the humans to help regain our homeland is very distasteful, but it will be worth it. Any risk is worthy if it brings me closer to helping the Ran-Tan return to the shores of our crater lake. In the meantime, I will use the humans ways, and tools, and coins to gain the power I need to kill the oni.
