In fact, Ragnar is not a barbarian but far from it. He grew up in a rich family and always received more or less everything he needed or wanted. Both his parents were Pathfinder Society members – his father is a sorcerer and his mother is a priest; both are Taldan. Nonetheless, Ragnar did not grow up very close to either of them and in fact he can’t remember spending much time with either since they were always away from home or busy with their own affairs.
Since he was young, it went without saying that he should and he would also join the Pathfinder society at some point in the future. In order to fit him as best as possible for this future career, his parents constantly brought private tutors to their estate to evaluate him and let him reach his true potential. Although he had some natural magical ability – some of it still remaining – he was never able to sit down for more than a few minutes at a time. After he tore his teacher’s spellbook, his parents acknowledged that their son will not belong to the “finer adventurer caste”, as they put it. Not giving up, they next brought in a swordsman. While Ragnar appreciated the physical effort and enjoyed being able to exert himself, he was too reckless in his fighting and had little patience for more civilized organized, armored combat. He preferred to fight with less armor in order to be more agile – even if it meant he would receive more blows. By this point, the teenage Ragnar was quickly growing into a large man while his blows broke more than a few of his practice swords. At some point in his training, he was approached by Frei, one of his parents’ slaves. Frei, a captured northern barbarian who was employed as a farmer on the Skarr estate, saw Ragnar training with his teacher and offered to spar with him using only a rather short wooden stick. Ragnar accepted, and was beaten badly by Frei. Nonetheless, he appreciated the slave’s fighting style and demanded that he become his teacher. In the next few years, Frei became more than a weapon instructor to Ragnar and taught him much of the skills he knew – how to survive in the wild, how to move quickly during combat and how to control his innate rage and use it to his advantage. All in all, Frei became the closest person alive to Ragnar, and although the student constantly derided his teacher for being a slave, on his eighteenth birthday he broke Frei’s collar himself and freed him to go back to his people. Ragnar himself left his home the same day, without telling his parents who would return only weeks later to discover the fact. Uncertain where to try his luck, during the next couple of years he earned his bread in all sorts of semi-legal and illegal activities, working for crime lords and extorting protection money from townspeople. Yet this life was hardly interesting enough and didn’t come close to the few stories he heard from his parents about their own adventures. He tried living in the wilderness for a while travelling around, Despite being initially reluctant to do so, Ragnar eventually travelled to Absalom to join the Pathfinders himself, yet without his parents patronage.
Ragnar stands about six feet tall and weighs around 220 pounds, mostly muscle. He is opportunistic, quickly irritated, arrogant towards others and generally a solitary person. He values others only if and when they prove their worth, especially in battle, which he considers to be the best way to judge what a person really is. He has racial prejudices towards most non-Taldans, whom he feels to be inferior in various aspects; he dislikes women and believes them to be weaker than men and therefore unworthy of most non-sexual attention. All these make Ragnar quite hard to get along with. The few individuals who do manage to earn his appreciation win his loyalty and support.
Ragnar cares little about money, spending much of what he has and knowing he can quickly earn some back if necessary. He is generous to anyone following him or serving him, although he would expect at least some competency from these people. He values his honor (he’s quite flexible about it if necessary), but cares little about other non-Taldan cultural conventions.
