Greetings all,
I would like to explore replacing or altering the MT class abilities. I have given an idea some thought, but more brains thinking about it are going to see things that I with my one brain might miss. So, I come to you and all of your brains.
The Idea
Divide the MT levels in half, round down. I’ll call this number an “effective level bonus” for lack of a better term. Add the “effective level bonus” to the character’s actual level in each of the two classes he uses MT to advance spellcasting in for the specific purpose of class abilities. Edit: this does not change the MT advancement in two spellcasting classes
As an example, let’s advance the character I listed above to the end of the MT road, Wizard 3 / Cleric 3 / MT 10. Half of 10 is 5, so an “effective level bonus” of 5. I add this to both Wizard 3 and Cleric 3 for an “effective level” of 8 in each class.
The end result is that this character would:
• channel energy as an 8th level cleric instead of a 3rd level cleric (moving from 2d6 to 4d6)
• gain 8th level domain powers
• gain the wizard feat that comes at Wizard 5
• gain 8th level arcane school powers
• possibly have a familiar that would advance to 8th level on the Familiar Ability Descriptions chart (depending on the Arcane Bond chosen)
• retain the standard dual casting of a W3/C3/MT10, meaning casting as a Wizard 13 and Cleric 13
The standard class abilities of the MT could be discarded or retained, depending on what seems balanced.
Background
I am the GM, pathfinder game rules. Not a PFS game. I have a player who is planning on going MT. He is presently a Wizard 1 / Cleric 3, so there is a little time before he can take his first level of MT.
Looking for Feedback
At a character level of 16, the example above does not seem broken to me. I could also just be looking at it funny, so I would like to know what you think. Does this seem weak, strong, or about right? Am I missing something obvious that is abusable?
Any and all feedback is welcome, and thanks for reading.
