Quian (usually called Q by those unfamiliar with Tien syllables) was born, tainted by the lower plains, to a peasant couple in Chu Ye, in Tian Xia. Realizing the cursed nature of the child, the couple summoned their hamlet's spiritual advisor and pled for advice. The kindly old man told the couple that he would dispose of the child, and the sorrowful parents left in great relief. The old man was no ordinary healer, however, but one of the many recruiters for a strange and forbidden cult.

The cult of Ashardalon is a group that venerates a great wyrm red dragon who escaped a mortal wound to his heart by summoning a balor and magically forcing it to serve as a heart, imprisoned within his chest. Banned by all right-thinking communities, it lives underground, hidden away among the Wayang of Minara - a group who certainly understands the usefulness of secrecy.

Quian was raised among the cultists. By day he was tutored in the mystic arts. By night he was turned out to the jungle to hunt and fend for himself. As adulthood approached, Quian was closely monitored for arcane talent. Should he have manifested, his fate would have been sealed. Fortunately for Quian, no such talent emerged. Quian developed a formidable physique, and demonstrated rote mastery of the cult's texts, but the spark of magical blood was not evident. Thus was he spared a gruesome end.

One of Quien's fellow outcasts, a half-blue dragon elf was not so lucky. Upon the first awakenings of his magical powers, he was summoned to a dark ritual, and bound in chains next to Quian. With supplications to Ashardalon, the cultists cut out the blue-scaled elf's heart with a ritual knife, and then sliced open Quian's chest. Under a constant stream of healing magic, Quian's heart was removed and replaced by that of the hapless blue. Having since recovered from his ordeal, Quian was sent by the cult to Varisia to study Thassalonian sin magic, a task of great importance to the cult, and perfectly suitable for the spawn of an Oni. Quian begins in Sandpoint, arriving to study the mysterious pillar outside of town.
