Background:
The man that is Rackham Pulsifer was once a paladin of great renown: performing miracles, smiting the evil, healing the sick, cleansing the realm, and all that. No foe could stand up to him. Except for one. And really, that's all it takes.
On what was supposed to be a simple scouting mission, Rackham and his band of adventuring crusaders was attacked by Zogmar, an old green dragon. In one blow, the paladin was struck dead. His followers, not knowing what to do, now that their leader had fallen, took Rackham's body and ran into the dark heart of the Lurkwood.
After days of lugging Rackham's putrefying body through the dense brush, the band of adventurers came upon the hut of an old green hag. The hag offered to bring Rackham back from death, but would require a sacrifice. The moment one of Rackham's followers agreed, the hag slew them to a man.
Rackham returned to life abandoned in the Lurkwood, riddled with a crippling weakness, and severed of his divine connection. What had seemed only moments of blackness had been nearly twenty years.
Over the next few weeks, Rackham managed to summon the strength to travel to the nearest town. Using the party wizard's spellbook, he began to teach himself the ways of the arcane, to perform great feats of magic in Iomedae's name, convinced that it could return him to favor in the eyes of his god.
Soon, "The Magic Man", also known as "Mr. Eldritch" began his crusade against wickedness. When before he had used divine fury and the way of the sword, now his magic missiles and rays of flame tore evil from its shell.
After close to a year of his arcane crusade, Rackham Pulsifer came to the small town of Sandpoint at precisely the wrong time. Within days, pirates raided the town. The arcane crusader fought valiantly, but in the end was taken captive...
Appearance and Personality:
Rackham is tall and broad, but leans heavily upon a simple oaken staff for support. His weathered skin is sallow, and his long, dead-looking gray hair is pulled into a long braid. Rackham's eyes, though, appear to be those of a much younger man; clear, blue, and piercing. He typically dresses in simple traveler's garb, only a small leather pouch and his staff. His only distinctive possession is a large wooden holy symbol of Iomedae strung around his neck on a string of prayer beads. This intricately carved rosary serves as Rackham's spellbook.
Rackham Pulsifer is usually reserved and polite, the quintessential 'good cop'. However, he has no tolerance for evil in any of its forms- anything from profanity to the killing of innocents. He never speaks ill of anyone, save for the most evil of villains, and obeys laws to the letter. Not your typical arcanist.
