Mr. Brooks remembers nothing of his life before roughly thirteen years ago. His first memory is of waking up in an alley, with three dead men around him, the taste of blood in his mouth, and a voice in his head. The voice, which calls itself "Ham", told him that the three men had attacked him, and it took over to defend them. Unfortunately, the act of doing so damaged Mr. Brooks' mind, and neither he nor Ham have any memories before the fight (which only Ham remembers). Ever since, whenever he is in a fight for his life or is severely injured, Ham takes control of Mr. Brooks' body, transforming him into a bestial humanoid-crocodile hybrid, and massacring their enemies. Ham is brutal and vicious, and delights in bloodshed and killing, and Mr. Brooks is inevitably horrified by Ham's gleeful retaliation to any attack. Mr. Brooks, is calm, polite, and gentlemanly, and prefers to stay out of fights whenever possible, knowing that any kind of combat makes it difficult to keep Ham from taking control. His genteel manner and obvious training make it seem as if he is a member of a noble family somewhere, but he does not know for sure. Since that day 13 years ago, Mr. Brooks has given up on regaining his memories, and tries to live a solitary life, researching the realm of alchemy as a hopeful way to give Ham his own body. Mr. Brooks took to adventuring, or, as he prefers to call it, "problem solving," as a way to pay the bills, to gain knowledge in his quest to be rid of Ham, and to provide an outlet for Ham's violent tendencies. Wherever he settles, he institutes himself as a professional alchemist and scholar, and attempts to make contacts with the upper class and enter their ranks. From time to time, however, he will be forced to allow Ham to take control to save their lives. On these events, his alter ego goes on a vicious killing spree, killing any attackers with his teeth and bare hands. For this reason, Mr. Brooks is forced to relocate from time to time when word of his psychotic alter ego becomes known. In the earliest years of his memories, Mr. Brooks had difficulty keeping Ham under control. Ham is guilty of several murders in various countries, and though none of them have been tied to Mr. Brooks, the clues are there for an astute mind to connect. In more recent years, the two have come to a form of agreement, in which Ham is permitted to take control in most combat situations, so long as he does not harm innocents. In return, Ham will only come forth in instances of combat, and no longer murders any who do not attack them first. Furthermore, Mr. Brooks will actively seek out jobs and contracts which provide opportunities for violence, so that Ham may have what he considers fair payment for staying quiet. Mr. Brooks tries to keep this particular profession quiet, as he is also known to the nobles and wealthy as a talented tutor, and "adventuring" is frowned upon by these groups.
