Praedonus shifted restlessly in the sand as the people around him discussed the merits of this course of action or that. He was no commander, to be sure, but neither did he handle inaction well. When it became apparent that the group was of as many minds as members, he snatched up his trident and pointed to the listing wreckage of their ship.
That there is the only thing known in this sea of uncertainty.
The paladin began to stride towards what remained of the Jenivere and called back over his shoulder. I am going to see what can be recovered. I'll turn back by the time the sun is a hand from the horizon.
A few strides later, Praedonus called back once more. Mock! Care for a scrounge? He never broke stride and he never once looked back.

Sorry guys! I'm still here, I swear it. INSANE week at work and drama at home have kept me away. Things have settled and I should be good to go now. Again, sorry for the delays.

Praedonus grunted when he was shoved to the sand and was too taken aback by Sasha's outburst to offer any input. Instead, the Paladin stands and gives a half-hearted attempt to brush himself off before tucking his gauntlets in his belt and going to the neatly arranged pile and retrieving his gear.
Seeing that the rest of the castaways were mobile, Praedonus approaches Tom. Let us see if the Dawnflower will heed my pleas with a more cooperative patient.
Assuming Tom allows it

Sorry for my apparent absence. I was checking the story thread, not aware that the forum doesn't necessarily go to the most recent page when you click on the link. I spent the last couple of days wondering why no one was posting....
Anywho, I can't write anything up this second, gotta get a lot of work done, but I fully intend to today. Hopefully in a few hours.

Praedonus shouldered his trident when he saw the last of the sea scorpions dispatched. Nice thrust, Tom. Have a seat by the gear and I'll tend your leg in a moment. This one looks to need my aid a bit more.
Moving quickly to the side of the fire-haired woman, the Paladin planted his trident in the sand beside her head and stripped his gauntlets from his hands as he knelt.
He placed his right hand on the woman's forehead and his left covered the wound in her thigh. Raising his eyes to the sky, he called called out to Sarenrae.
Flower of the Dawn, Lady of the Healing Light, turn your gaze to us and let the radiance of your countenance heal this lass.

Alas, the gods favor me not. Never the less, XP!

If Rhys doesn't respond by this evening, I'll make a move.
Nevermind. Should have loaded the gameplay thread even though it didn't indicate a new post.

Praedonus's eyes alight with a viscious gleam when he plants his trident in the sand just ahead of his hind foot even as the sea scorpion launches itself at his face. Fine then. Spit yourself and I shall roast you for my supper!

Ryuko wrote: I did reveal an unwelcome truth. Turns out these things are poisonous! *evil DM grin* In all seriousness I am being a little light on this combat. It is the first one and I don't wanna ruin you guys, as well as feeling out how this works. I'm not gonna let you walk all over it, but these are not particularly tough foes, and I am still working out the game. Also, you didn't answer my question posed from Spout Lore. [ooc]Roger that. Just thought I'd put it out there. Crap! You're right, I totally missed that. - It would have been supremely helpful to know even half of the knots he saw the crew of the Jenivere use while she still sailed. Even now, after a childhood spent fishing and sailing with his father, Praedonus could only manage a few basic knots.

Praedonus hurls the scorpion out into the surf by it's tail, but between them lands a trident, tines down, tossed by Mockery from the pile. The creature rears and skitters forward like a centipede. Praedonus could definitely get to the weapon, but he's unlikely to get it back up in time to avoid taking another sting from the creature. What do you do?
Praedonus taunted the sea scorpion as it scuttled forward and he rushed to take up his trident. Gozreh calls to you, crabling! Back to her salty embrace!

Ryuko wrote: Praedonus recalls long lazy days by the docks as his father spoke of all the hazards of sea travel. "Sea Scorpions!" The big man said, mimicking a striking tail with his hands, "Ugly buggers are like crabs big as a man's torso, they'll clamp on and try to sting you to death with their tails! Gotta watch for their venom too! It'll leave a man shaky and weak."
Those were heady days, before the first voyage. What is the one thing you wish your dad had warned you about on sea voyages?
The creature clamps around your leg like an ugly boot, tail rising to pin into your thigh.
Take 1d6 damage and defy danger with CON
What do you do?
Damage - Crustacean Sting: 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (4) - 2 = 2
DD(CON) - Crustacean Sting: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 1 = 10
The Sea Scorpion latched onto his leg lashed out with its tail, but its stinger was largely deflected by Praedonus' tasset, only managing the barest scratch.
Cursing with frustration, Praedonus reaches down to grab the beast's tail and attempt to rip it from his leg and hurl it back into the surf.
DD(STR) - Tear off/hurl Sea Scorpion: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4) + 1 = 8
My two cents, since you mentioned you're learning the system; If I was running this scenario, I would not have given me any info on these critters. My roll of 2 gave you a hard move. Below is an excerpt from the book on missing a Spout Lore: On a miss the GM’s move will often involve the time you take thinking. Maybe you miss that goblin moving around behind you, or the tripwire across the hallway. It’s also a great chance to reveal an unwelcome truth.

Praedonus knows he's probably in for some pain, but that's never deterred him from doing right in the past. The Paladin delivers his kick, bracing for the snap of its pincers. What is it my pop told me about these things? It's been years since I sailed with him...
Spout Lore - Crustacean Critters: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
Apparently, I wasn't paying attention to this particular lesson from good 'ol dad. Oh well, XP!!

So, I haven't had a chance to pole around the forum as yet. Is there a die roller handy, or do we use a 3rd party for that. Also, I haven't completed a character sheet yet! Where do I post that?
I'm not sure if my kick is a H&S or falls more into a DD. Let me know.

Praedonus groaned as consciousness returned. So much for safe passage he thought as he struggled to his feet. Looking around to gain his bearings, he's startled by the sight of a few odd crustaceans investigating one of the crew still unconscious on the beach. When Praedonus moved to take up his trident in defense of the man, he noticed that it was leaning on a tidy pile of supplies.
That's curious, he thought. No time to arm myself now though. One of the creatures cried out in apparent celebration of a cooperative meal and leaped forward.
Praedonus gave his own wordless shout and dashed forward to deliver a kick at the crustacean and buy him time to drag the crew member toward the pile of supplies.

- What deity does Praedonus follow? (Remember we aren't too worried about canon here, if one of those jumps out cool but if not come up with a regional god or different interpretation.)
Praedonus pays homage to many gods, mostly in the natural domain. (I got plans for the future, though) :-)
- How does a presumably militant paladin end up on a peaceable merchant vessel like the Jenivere?
The Jenivere happened to be headed out of port at the time that Praedonus needed to be leaving; Rather urgently as it turns out.
- Where did our shining paladin learn to sail?
Praedonus grew up on the coast and spent a fair amount of his childhood fishing with his father.

So, Sorry about the lag. Praedonus, sea-faring Paladin enters with decidedly less stealth than Mockery. Scale armor, patterned after a lion fish, glints in whatever light is in this thread. ;)
