Tom listens to Arianne's report with a bit of relief. Only later does he start thinking more about what she had said.

"Three lifetimes? Wait, if Jessie turned into an old man in a few minutes, and they kidnapped three of them... we may have to hurry."

Tom hops into the van after Sean. "Yes. And quickly."

Tom barely stifles a laugh until Sunny mentions the circles. "Yes, speaking of that, I sketched a picture of them. Maybe one of you knows what they were meant to do?" He offers the paper to Allison or Arianne or anyone else in the car who might be able to understand it it.

I accidentally missed Sunny's post earlier.

"Uh, amen?" Though he plays along, Tom is not quite certain about the prophecies Sunny cites and sometimes doubts if Sunny knows what he is talking about at all.

Sometimes Tom gets a lead to a new story. Or Arianne is called by the Sect. Or Sean finds out from a contact. Or Allison does research. Or Sunny gets a heavenly vision.

I'm fine with Boston. Where the mysteries happen (in Boston or out) might also be connected to how we find out about the monster.

    Prompts for others

Sunny: You’re a bit suspicious of them (maybe due to their unnatural powers or something like that). This whole "chosen one" business sounds kind of like those scams I fell for during the brief period when I was trying to invest my life savings.

Arianne: They introduced you to the existence of monsters. Tell them how you feel about that. You summoned a creature of darkness before my eyes (is that something she would do?). That was when I stopped hoping to be able to pull off a mask and find a normal person beneath it.

Sean: They’re your hero, exactly the kind of monster hunter you aspire to be. Tell them why you worship them. He is the proof that you can be a real monster hunter without being weird.

Allison: Initially rivals, you both now respect each others’ talents. We went to college together, and... I'm not sure what Allison would have done at college, but maybe I'm envisioning being on opposite sides of the debate team, or running against each other for student council.

    Prompts from others

Allison: They act as your conscience when the power goes to your head. Ask them about the last time this happened.

Apart from forcing Allison to be able to explain everything in normal person lingo, Tom tries to remind her of the important logistic considerations, like putting out magical fires she created after she finishes fighting monsters.

Sean: This hunter is a cousin or more distant relative. Second or third cousin, far enough removed that they might have only seen each other at family reunions and wakes. But he's still family, and that means something to Sean.

Aww, shucks. I remember writing you thank-you cards for the birthday gifts you gave me. Sean is definitely older than Tom, and more experienced in life.

All of a sudden, she felt racked with guilt for making her sit alone while they were all playing. At last, their eyes met for a moment. Detached amusement. That was a bad sign. What if she felt excluded?

    What I have so far:

Tom is fresh out of college (he majored in mass communications, and he likes to sign his name with B.A.). In order to start his career, he signed up as an investigative journalist for The Inquirer based on an ad in the local newspaper.

As he later found out, The Inquirer was only two men strong (now three), its circulation was not much higher than that, and it was not quite the reputable newspaper he had imagined it to be. And, apparently, the role of the "investigative journalist" included going from door to door to sell the paper.

Tom had always liked writing pieces about politics. But when he realized that politics doesn't sell copies, he sometimes felt a need to relax his principles of journalistic integrity, but mostly tried to find the oddest possible stories to publish. Nevertheless, he was passionate about journalism, and hoped to move his way up to better jobs as soon as he could find a better job offer. His current gig is just an uneasy start to his career, at least until he would be able to just write normal articles and be a normal person, as he would like to be.

Tom is friendly and outgoing with other people, but stilted and uneasy when alone. He has become increasingly nervous, ever since his research for his articles about Bigfoot and UFOs turned out a little bit more successful than he had hoped.

I'm not quite sure how he would fit in with the rest of the group, but I'm sure he would love to have an interview with some of the other characters.

Needing to be bailed out, easily scared ("like, zoinks!"), not very capable at fighting. I thought that this type of character would be represented well by some of the Mundane's moves. Being a reporter for a tabloid is a good reason why the character is hunting monsters with professionals and wizards, and therefore (I think) could work with any of those groups.

    2. The Flake: A reporter for a tabloid

Steve suffered from nightmares for a few days after what happened. He was afraid of being left alone in a room. He tried not to scare away other kids away as much when he needed the company. He still had no tact at all, but his less confrontational demeanor earned him just enough respect from the team coach to be invited to the high school football team. He managed to grow enough to be useful to the team, and the game took his mind off of the circus and Calvin Kipp.

Holly's preoccupation with the occult, as well as her new clothes, annoyed him to no end, and he was probably somehow involved in at least one or two of the rumors about her. He doesn't pay much attention to Fatou anymore. He likes football more than speaking with them. But he still shivers whenever he walks down a hallway alone.

At some point in the last few months, Steve's father stopped coming back home, leaving his mother with even more work to do, and sometimes she has to travel out of town for a long time, leaving Steve alone more of the time.

The practical difference between the theories is whether its gravity can be manipulated by prayer, magic, or technical expertise. Yizid, lacking the two latter means, prefers to use the first. However, others might have better luck trying the other two means.

Here's what I have for my character's background.

    Background:
Kyrillosr was born to a family of poor merpeople that dwelt in the sea at the end of the forest river. His natural conceptions of modesty took objection to the nakedness that was prevalent in merfolk society, and he decided to put an end to such promiscuity by weaving seaweed clothing for merpeople to wear. Unfortunately, the idea didn't catch on, and only Kyrillosr, one sympathetic friend, and his few pet fish ended up wearing the clothes. Between Kyrillosr's seaweed kilt and his lambchop sideburns, he was indeed a curious sight among his people.

Saddened by his reception among his native race, and sickened by their immorality, Kyrillosr decided to abandon his people to live among the clothes-wearing races above sea level. Kyrillosr felt more at home with others who wore clothes like him, even if not made of seaweed. Naturally courageous, he still aspires to take up a life of adventuring, but he is all too frail for such endeavors.

Yet unskilled with regard to weaving with dry materials such as wool or linen, Kyrillosr's seaweed clothing business is nowhere near making him a rich merman. As his side job, he is employed by the city to dive underwater and clear the mud that builds up from time to time in the river, which is essential to the water supply; but he always tries to steer clear of fellow merpeople, among whom he feels uncomfortable.
