Pema was born somewhere in Vudra, the precise location only known to a few, and Pema is not one of them. Here parents were both human, but both had distant air-genie blood, and that combined was enough for Pema to manafest as a full Sylph when born.
Pema's parents feared the scandal that having a non-human child would create, and so gave her up at birth. They used their not-insubstantial political connections to give her the best life they could, making sure that she got into the sastra padaprajna by some small miracle, on the condition that her name be changed to Pema Chodran. This created the distance from her parents that they needed, and gave young Pema a chance at a decent life free from social scorn. There young Pema began training. She learned how to fight with a few simple weapons, as well as use her considerable dexterity to her advantage.
However, is was when the temple began teaching meditative techniques that things changed. Pema learned the Sastra 'battle meditation' quickly, and mastered using her intuition for dodging attacks faster than any of the other children. As the young sylph's interest in spirituality grew, she began to eschew other aspects of her ascetic life.
Pema quickly fell behind in weapons training and unarmed practice. However, she didn't care was she began exploring the vast complexities of the universe while meditating. The monks almost threw her out when she astonished them by casting her first spell, making her robes glow.
The head monks allowed her to stay in the temple on the condition that she share how she discovered such abilities, which were usually outside of the purvue of Ki. She readily agreed, and this went on for some time.
However, the Raja in charge of the sastra padaprajna eventually got himself into a war, and when it was all over, half of the padaprajna was given over to the rival Raja, including Pema, as a condition of peace. This new Raja was told of Pema's abilities and immediately declared that she was 'useless as a warrior.' She was banished from his lands and became a vagabond and wonderer.
