I saw a DM coup de grace a character that had failed it's save against Icy Prison while I was at a con last weekend.

The spell says you are helpless, but it also says that the layers of Ice block line of effect.

You are covered in an inch of ice per caster lvl, so a minimum of 9 inches. If you can't draw a line to the target to cast, say, magic missle, I would say you couldn't even attack the helpless character without breaking the ice first. Certainly not coup de grace.

Thoughts?

Hey guys, I am going to be playing my lvl 12 Barbarian at Kublacon PFS this weekend and I need to spend some cash.

I SWEAR I remember there being an item in the Ultimate Equipment guide that lets Barbarians rage as an immediate action, but now I can't find it.

As a superstitious invulnerable rager this would be huge. He gets +9 to saves and 3 points of DR/ - when he rages.

Did I dream this? Please help!

Okay, I am kind of sleepy and lost track of the math here, but I am thinking a lvl 9 druid, lvl 1 Mamoth Lord with a triceratops animal companion could be madness.

Large size (normal animal companion, at level 10) does
2d6 + 1.5 str (24) for 2d6 + 10
Powerful Charge means 4d6 + 2x str for 4d6 +14

Mamoth lord means: (+2 str and one size level)

Huge Triceratops for 2d8 + 1.5 str (26) for 2d8 + 12
Powerful Charge means 4d8 + 2x str for 4d8 + 16

Animal Growth ( a 5th lvl druid spell) adds +8 str and one size level, so Str 34 and base damage of 4d6. That means:

4d6 + 1.5 str (34) for 4d6 + 18
or 8d6 + 2x str for 8d6 + 24 on a charge

Now throw in Strong Jaw, a lvl 4 druid spell.

Adds two size levels for natural attacks, double the damage if the chart can't go any higher.

In this case, 4d6 is the highest on the list, so it would be doubled twice. With pathfinder rules, however, that would just be triple damage. Only Triple, lol.

Oh, Throw in improved natural attack on the gore to make things even crazier. Turn that 4d6 into 6d6.

Net result at lvl 10 is a Triceratops that does this:

6d6 + 1.5 str (34) for (6d6 + 18) x 3

aka 18d6 + 54

Powerful Charge is 12d6 + 2x str (34) for (12d6 + 24) x 3

So... 36d6 + 72 damage on a charge.

Am I crazy?

Okay, so I looked up a few threads on how magic weapon properties work. There seems to be some ambiguity about the Bane property.

So, imagine a weapon that is +1 human bane. An inquisitor wants to use his ability to add Orc bane to it as well. The players hand book seems to say that you can't put the same property on a weapon twice, but is bane(orc) the same as bane(human)?

The advantage would be against half orcs for double bane.

I can see arguments either way, I would personally allow it. (Of course I am playing an inquisitor atm, so I may be biased)

My real question would be, is there any official ruling? Anyone know?

Thanks in advance!

Okay guys, here is my thesis:

Words of Power might not totally suck for blasting and summoning, especially if I get a bunch of 'normal' spells from patron and favored class as a witch.

I am considering using the very under powered Words of Power system from Ultimate Magic to make a character for the King Maker AP.

I know that the WoP are pretty crappy in general but I was hoping to play something interesting in the new AP.
I did an awesome Sorc using Treanmonk's guide to wizards as a guide during the Carrion Crown AP. It was pretty great and I agree with pretty much everything he said, especially about utility spells.

That being said, My goal this time was to do something I never do, which for me is damage spells and summoning, two things that WoP can actually do decently.

So, I was thinking a Half-Orc witch to get patron spells and I had a cool story worked out, when an old friend pointed out the Orc Scared Witch Doctor!

So at the end of this exhaustive dialog, I am planning to play a good Orc who failed at summoning his first familar and found a spooky mask instead. The mask teaches how do do 'modern' magic that isn't all blasty word stuff, and he goes on to help build a kingdom.

Okay, is WoP totally crazy?

Notice: I am NOT talking about flurry, so no need to point out you can't flurry with natural attacks. Thanks!

So, say you are an Orc Ranger with the natural weapon style. You have 2 claws and a bite as natural attacks.

You then take improved unarmed strike and two weapon fighting.

So you could, say, kick someone at full BaB -2 and make 2 claws and a bite as secondary attacks, (-5 to attack and 1/2 str to damage)

The book says that you treat your secondary natural attacks as 2 weapon fighting, so you need the Two Weapon Fighting feat to avoid massive penalties.

Or would it be 2 kicks at full BaB -2, and 2 claws and a bite as secondary attacks?

What do you think?

The Double-Chained Kama is an exotic two handed melee weapon.

Do you need to take the exotic weapon proficiency with this weapon to use it without the minus 4, or is prof with Kama enough?

Similar question about the Double walking stick Katana, which basically has two wakizashis inside.

I think you have to have the exotic feat to use the Double Chain Kama, but I would argue you can draw the Wakizashis and use them without Exotic Prof in the double walking stick Katana, so long as you are proficient with Wakizashis.

Do you agree?

So my inquisitor has an Ape companion with the precise strike feat, so we can both have a d6 of sneak attack, and Combat Reflexes to go with it's reach.

After tonight I hit lvl 5 and he gets another feat. I am planning to take the team work feat that gives +4 when flanking, but I won't have the BaB until lvl 8.

With only 2 more feats to play with for the entire society run, what should I look for?

So, I got a Kitsune Boon sheet at KublaCon recently. I am also going to need to make a new level 1 character in about 3 weeks. I am trying to decide what class to play.

I know that Ninja seems pretty obvious, +2 dex +2 cha -2 str, so I guess a finesse build would work. Especially with the extra bite attack.

However, one of the cool things kitsune get is a handful of feats that let you 1: turn into a fox, 2: do it as a swift, 3: charge as a fox and shift into a person and full attack.

Unfortunatlely, these feats need a BaB of +3, +6, and +10, respectively. Basically, you couldn't get many of these cool feats as a 3/4 base attack character like the Ninja. I would feel like I am wasting some cool feats if I didn't get them.

So, what should I do? Maybe some kind of ranged character? Are there any cool Paladin ranged builds?

Let me know your ideas!

That is pretty much the whole question, playing my first character with an animal companion.
,
I am getting 4 skill ranks, just want to make sure that there aren't specific skills that get that sweet +3.

I am aware of the normal animal companion skill restrictions, I am getting the companion at level 4.

Thanks!

So I am starting up a new PFS character for the up coming KublaCon in San Fran. I chose this character, like all my new characters, by finding a cool mini and making up a back story.
My Inquisitor of Gozreh is kind of a jack of all trades type with the animal domain. I am planing to take a Velociraptor animal companion because they don't get too big, Medium at the largest.
I think this will work well with the Inquisitor when the raptor can take team work feats (after getting Int 3) but my real question is about skills.
Can I take Perform (dance) with the skill points my animal companion gets? Also, can I use these as a Day job?
Hmm... or maybe Juggling instead. I would pay to see that, IRL.

Let me know what you think!

I assume Silver Crusade goes to Andoran,

Shadow Lodge to Cheliax,

not really sure of the others. Anyone know where this is listed? I can't find it in the faction guide.

Thanks!

Well, I am thinking of using these two options to finally make a fun Kung-Foo style charater in pathfinder Society.

I am thinking of taking Unarmed figher and picking up Panther style, (ignoring prereqs, Wis)
then Monk MMS to get the 3rd Panther feat, Panther Parry, (ignoring prereqs, Wis)
then Fighter to get Snake style (which I will qualify for normaly!)
then Monk MMS for 3rd Snake feat, Snake Fang (ignoring prereqs, skills)

1st level feat for dodge, human feat for weapon finesse. 3rd level for mobility.

I plan to take Unarmed fighter for the rest of the game, pick up normal fighter feats, maybe the Crane stlye, who knows, fighters get so many feats!

I am imagining at lvl 4 (best case scenario):
I charge the (large monster) and it makes an AOO!
I use Panter parry as a swift action to get a free hit in that causes the AOO to get a -2 penalty! (if I hit)
-2 to the attack, plus my mobility +4 to AC, the AOO misses!
I then use Snake Fang, because he missed me, to make my own AOO!
My AOO hits! I spend an imediate action to make another attack!
I then, Finally, make my charge attack!

In this situation I would get 4 attacks in one round, all at the +2 from charging. Plus, it would look f*cking cool!

Long story short, I am trying to decide is if I should bother with wisdom or just wear a mithral chain shirt and save the point buy.

Is this cool or crazy, let me know before Pacificon next month!

Well, I am thinking of making a Synthesist summoner who will take a few levels of Rogue for a Society Character.

I am wondering about the wording of the Scout ability. It says that after a charge the rogues attack gets sneak attack. This is usually not an issue, but the eidolen can have Pounce.

Basically, can a Synthesist Summoner, Rogue scout, charge and make a handfull of attacks that all get sneak attack?

I think RAW it would work, especially because APG gave the Scout option at the same time the APG gave Barbarians the ability to pounce.

So is it too awesome? Or not awesome enough? Thoughts?

So I just played my first session with a barbarian and had a blast. I was planning to multi-class into fighter but now I think I will stick it out as a Barbarian.

Now, of course, I have to decide what do do with him!

I was thinking of going beast totem master, but I would only get pounce for lvl 10 and 11. Probably not worth it.

I know I am doing Invulnerable Rager and I took Raging Vitality. Anyone have some advice specific to Society play?

Thanks!

Well, 3 out of 4 characters in my current game just died due to a mummy paralyzing them all and coup-de-gras doom, so I have to make a new 6th level character.

We roll stats, I got 12, 12, 14, 14, 14, 15.

I want to make a front line fighter (because I am sick of hearing people whine about my characters being too defensive. He was a lvl 5 Sorcerer, but whatever)

I am thinking of doing a rage prophet with the Metal Mystery. Probably a half-orc with favored class bonus going towards extra rage rounds.

Any advice?

P.S. I know I can't actually become a rage prophet until next level :p

Quick question, I am starting a Society character this Monday, just wanted to check what from Ultimate Magic is allowable.

My copy of the Society rules doesn't include UM, is this out yet?

I would appreciate a link if you have one. Thanks!

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So it is pretty clear in the beginning of the chapter that if you add two effect words with different saves, the caster gets to choose which you save against.
In one example a spell has a save-or-suck will save, also a reflex for 1/2.
The target of the spell faces the highest save DC of the two options, and the caster can chose to make it reflex or will.

What if the caster chooses will, the target has evasion, and they make their save?

Do they evade the damage part of the spell? Or does the fact that they made a will save, not a reflex save, force them to suck up the 1/2 damage?

Also, same spell but the caster chooses Will and the target has improved evasion. They fail the save, are subjected to the save-or-suck, but do they get 1/2 damage against the other effect word?

What do you think?

Hey Guys, my D&D group had a few people who have to leave and we need a few replacements. We are currently just finishing up the second part of the Serpents Skull module, so this is a perfect time to join.

We play in Oakland right next to the Bayfair BART station and getting rides to the house is no problem. Our host has a ton of minis and maps and even a table sized Dry erase board (my favorite). We play on Sundays, although the day might be negotiable. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

Hey guys, this is my first post so be patient if I double post or some other forum newbie mistake.
So, here is my problem. My character just got murdered in the second part of the Serpent's Skull module (stupid Paralysis, Coup De Gras) and I need to bring in a new one. I was interested in the Alchemist Class and came up with an interesting back story for a lvl 1 half-orc monk, rest alchemist. (He was the child of 'unwilling relations' between his mother and an orc. Raised by a LG Church as a monk to show he is not a beast by nature, but able to channel his instincts into physical perfection. He, of course, is WAY smarter than he is wise and comes up with some performance inhancers instead. Hey, as far as he is concerned that is the best way to use the mind to improve the body. Screw that meditation crap :p)
The other Idea is just a Crazy Goblin alchemist. I love the flavor of throwing bombs and giggling.
A friend just pointed out I could use the same back story for the Goblin, but I am trapped with option paralysis. Especially after reading about Zen monk. I am about ready to flip a coin, so I am asking if I am missing anything obvious. I have until Sunday morning to chose, so let me know what you think.
Thanks for the help!
