... you begin as a dust farmer living with your aunt and uncle and get caught up in an unreal story to rescue a young princess who's actually your sister that was captured by a BBEG who, get this, turns out to be your very own father. Now the pets you found at the beginning of the story were once owned by your real parents but somehow forgot about them, BUT, the medling old man that lives not far from your farm that knew your parents very well (and their pets) has no recollection of them either, even though they saved his life countless time in the past. Anyway, that pesky hermit (who is totally responsible for you ending up living on some poor farm) lies to you about your father, and becomes a figment of your imagination when he finally croaks for nothing after supposedly being an ancient knight with mysterious powers.

I know, who would buy a story like that, right?

Hmmmm, I don't know... Maybe if there was some good orchestra music in the background? Oh WAIT... How about if you have your post scrolling, so the words get smaller the farther you read?? Just a thought, other then that... It really doesn't have a chance! :-)

I was almost in agreement... Until I saw the word WRITE in your post! :-)

In this box is my wife's beard trimmer...

Personally, I think it sounds good "on paper" but running a game like this (at least with my group) would be WAY to challenging or not that much fun... Especailly the "returning items to their rightful owner" part... Besides, who doesn't love the constant arguements between the CG good or Nuetral guy and the LG guy?? Some of the best times as a role player! Just my thoughts...

I just ran CotE for the first time to get back into DM'ing... VERY well done and am having a great time... My group is about half way through it and really enjoying it as well... Good choice!

Just thought this could be a fun read... I'll start...

"Going to Mc Donald's for a salad; Is like going to a hooker for a hug..."

The parties first quest is for the fabled +1 bug zapper.

All the mages dress in white robes with white pointy hats.

Forks & spoons are considered party treasure and sold back in town for a great deal of coin to them city folk.

You see at least 3 broken carriages in the front lawn of the Baron's house.

Every dungeon has a taxidermy

Every initative starts with the words... "Gentlemen, start your dice rolling"

Mobile home skirting makes the perfect shield.

Thanks for the chuckles, these are all pretty good!

To chime in also on the index cards... VERY useful tool, I have seen them used and use them myself numerous times in the past. I actually found it easier to buy the multi-colored packs... They usually come in like 3 or 4 different colors and makes staying organized WAY easier...

I.E. make the orange ones monsters, green ones treasure, pink cards NPC's and so on and so forth... Keeps you from flipping through 50 all white cards trying to find one monster...

Also... I like employing the use of a DM Screen as well... Since our gaming table is maybe smaller then everyone elses, it helps keep the "glancing eye effect" from happening... No one backs down fromm an Ogre with 2 hp's left... You know what I mean?

It's snowing like crazy right now, so I am plucking away at the forums... Thought it would be fun to see what some of the craziest character names other people have come up with for their NPC's... PC's... Etc...

I ran a Gnome thief once...

Runnin Undersacks

When smoking could actually be cheaper than Paizo... It's a problem!

To bad I can't run to 7-Eleven and pick up a pack of Paizo!

From the APG... Cavalier all the way!

Think Judge Dredd on Horseback here people!

Who doesn't like charging into a camp of goblins on horseback shouting "I am the law"

Playing an over cocky Cavalier with the "your beneath me" attitude was an absolute blast...

You could always try and make "find healing" a part of the scenario too... For example, use hyped up goodberries from the local forest or create a healing salve from the sap of the X plant found in the area your PC's are in, or have an NPC tell them about a healing pool outside of town guarded by "blob the beast" but if they can trick him or get past him then they could fill their waterskins from the pool... I think there are a lot of ways to be creative with this instead of saying Max the merchant has x amount of healing potions for sale... Just a thought.

In making a return to gaming... Found this thread pretty helpful, Thanks for asking it OP.

Just a module specific tip!

Ya I've read the module twice now and was thinking the exact same thing! Thanks for the advice...

Any more advice for Onemore? 'Cause I have some.

Onemore - the initiative system is a little intricate and I usually write the order down as it's announced. In pencil, since I find that PCs and NPCs alike sometimes use actions like delaying, readying an action or re-focusing. Having that order written down and in front of you is key to conducting combats fairly efficiently.

Also, don't be afraid to have enemies take the occasional stupid risk. Sticking to their best attacks and basic tactics can get boring: the party won't remember much about that kind of fight. But the one where one of the hobgoblins swung on a chandelier, wound up falling flat on his back in the middle of the party and spent the rest of the fight stabbing at their knees? They'll remember that one. It's most in-character when A) fighting low-Intelligence critters, B) the monsters figure they're doomed and may as well take crazy risks, or C) the monster is so much stronger that it is deliberately prolonging its "fun".

Very good ideas... Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for your time and effort here, I really appreciate it!

First post (be gentle please)

Been away from the gaming world for about a decade... Was last seen playing 3.0/3.5 when it was actually new and forsale at stores! Liked the change up from the classic AD&D, but sadly didn't get the chance to pursue it due to a little thing called marriage... Since going on my 150 pound blond headed diet, I am getting back into gaming with Pathfinder... Loving it so far and am about to DM my first game in well over 15 years!

So, with that said... Couple of quick questions...

1) one of my players is my friends wife... She's never gamed before and asked me to take it easy on her... Uhmmm, back in my era of 90's gaming... Girls didn't play rpg's! So any advice or "Don't do THIS" would be appreciated from anyone with female player knowledge...

2) Since I'm a little rusty... Planning on running a module for now, starting with "Crypt of the Everflame" and thought it would make a good start... My question is... I haven't told a "story" in years and I'm looking for a few pointers to help me get back into DM'ing again... it might just be nerves, but any advice or "best way to start" (better hooks then others, etc..) this module/story would be appreciated...
