I don't imagine she would be thrilled by serving the Soul Bleed who seeks to destroy the Dreaming and who came from the Night Blood. However, all we know about Ygrna comes from two thousand year old stories of the family that ultimately betrayed her. So, her motivations and personality might be far different than we "know." ![]()

![]() Many things would be unleashed were the Dreaming to completely unravel. It is possible to kill immortals. It can be far harder to ensure that they stay dead. Those old mothers we slew in the mountains were weak, nowhere near the power of the crowned queens of their kind. Left to their own devices they could eventually recreate a new body, though do not worry. They will not be left to their own devices. The oldest stories tell us that it is possible for immortals to truly die. They don't often provide exact destruction, and when they do there is little consistency between methods. My belief, and it is but a guess, is that when an immortal kills another immortal there are ways in which they still the power of that slain immortal. Mortals have to find ways to dissipate that power. That is why I believe our ancestors first did these bindings. Overtime is dissipates the power of the immortal into the First Lands. Li'luurant should have been weaker when we faced her than when our ancestors did. If she were to escape again, she would be weaker still until she would have been as easy to kill as one of those old mothers of storm. I can only guess at why Li'luurant wanted to ally with Yrgna specifically. All the other old mothers either drank the Witch Blood or are the daughters of those who did. They share what remains of Zamaz's power. The stories never suggest that Ygrna found and drank of Witch Blood. Nor do they say that she was the daughter of one of the crowned queens of thorn, storm, or any other primacy of witch's power. They tell us that she was a witch who found power 'so great that it could not be put aside. That when people tried to kill her she burned back into life.' If my theories are correct, and I do not know that they are. Ygrna's power will never dissipate over time. She will never be less than what she is. Maybe Li'luurant wanted this secret too. Maybe she thought Ygrna would share it with her." Malthazir's talk of binding spirits made her feel uncomfortable, but she owed him her aid. For each ritual to which he lent his power, she would help him bind a spirit. Within reason, of course. ![]()

![]() "I think I can answer that. The great spirits, may their names be lost to memory, measure their relative stature against each other not only by age but by the mortals souls that sustain them. All immortals can grow in strength by incorporating more vital and spiritual energy into themselves. For tens of thousands of seasons the souls of this land have been gathered in the Dreaming to deny sustenance to the hungers of the great spirits. Better the hungers of the living ancestors who will drink your life than those of the great spirits which will consume all that you are. Her ritual intended to take and consume all the souls within the Dreaming. She wanted, I believe, the power to contend not with the living ancestors but with greater spirits. If she is a bear of the great spirit of war, what displeasure of theirs or even the other old mothers should she fear. She would have outstripped them. ![]() When Gnisk says that she is a daughter of Nerat, is the word she uses the one when Niyut describes elves as "sons and daughters of Chana" or the one when she refers to herself as "daughter of Asulad"? The daughter of the El'vitch makes the traditional greetings of gesture to Gnisk and Māheo as they introduced themselves. She watches the formation of their coven with a wondering eye. By binding Yazgah, Asulad, and the three less fortunate witches, the Soul Bleed seems to have created a path way for mortal witches to dip into the immortal well of hags covens. This is mystical subject in which Niyut has had an interest ever since she boiled three storm hags in her cauldron. Great interest. I want to examine Si’elwaght now more than ever. But now is not that time. After the five witches establish their coven, Niyut walks over to Garidan, cupping his face gently as she examines his eyes. Normally, one transmutation breaks another. Unwind one curse and you might unwind several. However, Garidan's blindness had been caused by the interplay of a curse and the destruction of the Eh’semghédôm. Did her mother's counter charm free him from both? Is Garidan still blind? She nods. "How may I help, mother? I swore a vow to re-raise Eh’semghédôm since it is in part my fault that it shattered. When Truk buried his axe in the uncrowned queen of nightmare's chest, it looked like she lost control of her power. Could we spin some of her power out of the Dreaming to keep her weak? What remains of Eh’semghédôm are a day's journey to the south." Garidan has not made it a secret that he wanted some of the Soul-Bleed's essence. Trying to secure some can solve several problems. Niyut smiles as Raektov approaches. "In part, but have been told that three times makes the charm." Now that their diminished party is re-united, Niyut introduces each of them in turn to her mother. ![]()

![]() I see 4 possibilities concerning the Tower of Conjuration: 1. Scarlet was successful in triggering the wards as we left. The tower is shut up as tight as a drum. I will eat my shorts if the Tower of Conjuration is not warded against illicit teleportation or more brute force. In this scenario. we probably aren't high enough level to break in. 2. Scarlet was not successful in triggering the wards as we left. The Ice Giants took it over. They may or may not have mastered the tower's secrets. If they have not, we could try to loot what remains. If they have, see scenario 1. 3. Scarlet was successful in triggering the wards as we left, but the Ice Giants defeated the wards. They have occupied a tower with sundered defenses. We could try to murder them and take their stuff. 4. The tower was destroyed in the three way struggle against the fire worshiping gnolls, the human defenders, and the Ice Giants. We could pick over the remains. Now I'm for looting fallen cities as any girl, probably more eager than most given Niyut's hunger for essences. However, we need more information before we blindly go in. We don't have a ton of divination magic. But, maybe Mal and Niyut can come up with something between them. It's too bad scrying requires you to target a person. As for the apocalypse zombies, it is a concern that we don't have Cure Disease. However, we can kill at range. I'm more curious about where they came from. They weren't in the city when we left nor where they there in the sphere's campaign. I have a theory that there is an evil godling hiding out in Talanor who is empowering the undead there. ![]()

![]() It may require two casts of Teleport to get to Mötùrrim, The Tower of Necromancy. Each teleport can get you 900 miles. The Hazard of Necromancy teleported us all from Mötùrrim, The Tower of Necromancy to the Kragenwood. That was 100 miles away. (His teleportation magic could use a little work, honestly.) It took us a few days to get from the Kragenwood to High Mark Keep. We found the Chestnut Tree on the 8th of Faelis. The internet tells me that a laden ox can travel about three miles per hour. Each day we we had two long walks broken up by a two hour rest and an 8 hour rest. We were traveling about 14 hours per day. So at our best we were making 42 miles in a day. Though I bet we were doing less than that. We arrive at Earthenwork on the the 7th of Selefis, so we had been traveling for 18 days. 100 + (at maximum) 756: 856. We know that the Iron Mountains are roughly the size of the Rockies, which at their widest are about 300 miles across. 856+300: 1156 We know that the First Lands are broken off from the landmass of Haemil. Judging distances on the map is difficult, but if it's anything resembling scale the gap is somewhere between 20-50 miles wide. Let's say 35. 1156+35: 1191. We are in the Forest of Night somewhere. Again, judging from the map, I think we are somewhere between 100-200 miles from the gap. Let's say 150. 1191+150: 1341. If my calculations are anywhere near accurate that would require two teleports. ![]()

![]() Quickening Summon Monster V is no joke though. Since Summons have that round casting time, reducing that to a swift action is net more efficient than reducing haste (a standard action) to a swift action. (Especially since you don't want to use your candle very often.) You could get Empower and the next rank of Quicken for 8 Essences leaving 2 Ethereal and your 2 Arcane. You could get the SR and either Quicken or Empower. That would leave just the two Arcane essences unless you used the Abjuration Essence on the SR ability. In my opinion, though your mileage may very, Arcane Essences are most powerful (if you aren't after) higher DCs in granting thematic abilities. Abjuration, for example could either improve your Dispel checks, hedge outsiders, or really anything in theme either by itself or in conjunction with other essences. Can wizards learn spells from scrolls from other classes if the spell is on both lists? If they can, I know Truk and Niyut's mother, Asulad, has the Scribe Scroll feat. Though she uses carvings instead of ink and parchment. Maybe she could teach you Scrying since that's important for teleportation. Also, your staff already kind of knows Summon Monster V. ![]() As Niyut desperately tries to breathe life into her mother's still form, she sags with relief when she discovers that Asulad yet lives. "Why does she not awaken? When I shattered the Soul-Bleed's Dream Stone all the souls she had stolen should have winged free. I do not understand." Running her the back of her fingers down her mother's still face she begs, "Wake up. Please." Her prayers are interrupted by the sudden and conveniently-timed arrival of Anarzi. Niyut is not so lost to courtesy or to honor that she fails to give the Daughter of Chana a traditional greeting. Elven:
"Welcome, Anarzi, many-daughter-daughter of Chana. Ever welcome are the Seven Star tellers. What fire we have, yours. What salt we have, yours. Saw no coven we. Need three at least for a coven." A small part of Niyut, perhaps not as small as she might like, is not pleased about having to give up the staff they claimed from Prisca. Maybe it is the staff of the Wiavch; it is certainly potent enough. But where were these witches when we struggled against Li'luraant and Prisca? Where were they when the Soul Bleed was trying to use Eh’semghédôm to destroy the Dream and all the Souls therein? Hiding and scrying, she would guess. But, Niyut reminds herself, Magic, no matter how potent is not worth your honor. It is not worth the life of another to be lost in Dream. She places the staff in the Night Blood's hands and watches in awe as Yazgah awakens. The last time that she saw a witch disolve into black smoke, he had been bound to a stone of Eh’semghédôm. His end had been far more terrifying than it had been inspiring. But all Niyut can feel when her mother awakens is relief and joy. She buries her face in her mother's bosom as she embraces her. "Lost. He is lost in Dream. When we returned to village at grandmother's behest, we found our people confused and your staff shattered." She pulls back and points in the distance towards Raektov pulling a reluctant Tacal. "The young wizard repaired the broken pieces of your staff. I led Malthazir, far son of Chana, and Truk to pull power from the great spirit who preserves, he who is the enemy of time, nameless and forgotten may the great spirits be. By my arts, this power of remembrance resonated with the power that once inhabited your staff. The staff led us to Eh’semghédôm where the Soul Bleed and that traitor Prisca, cursed may she be, were trying to harvest all the souls in Dream. We did battle. To rescue you before she could sacrifice you in her rite, I caused her ritual to fail. Eh’semghédôm shattered. They fled that dark, but sacred place and we pursued. Here we did battle. Truk and I slew her remaining thralls. We vied with the Soul Bleed. Truk and Gruskorb, far son of the Twisted Iron, managed to destroy her body. Truk was glorious, mother! Not even the queen of nightmares, the uncrowned queen, could stand against him. In her death throws, she drew them into the Dream. Prisca, may her name be cursed and bound in iron, was laid low by the arts of Malthazir." Tears gather in her eyes and she shrinks into herself. "He is lost. I'm sorry, mother. I failed you. But, I will find him, I promise. If I have to go into the Dream and strip all the ichor of Zamaz from the blood of the Soul Bleed I will, if I must, to return your son." ![]() It looks like 1 Ethereal Essence is worth about an additional 20' if the secondary is keyed to range as well. (Judging from the Axe in its current incarnation.) I would Rank order it: 1. SR (Basically you now get two saves for most spells for free. And given your Will Save bonus. It's a greater value than just increased saves.) 2. Increased Range 3. Increased AC (The cheapest way to increase your AC at first is to attach +1 (Insight, Luck, or Sacred/Profane) bonuses on to a Sundry bond in this case, Ruza. It's a +3 for 3 Essences to start. And then you can for greatest value slowly increase these along with the Enhancement bonus on your Armor and you NA bonus.) 4. Increased Saves 5. Stamina/Panache (Your Life Essence and a curio already bolster these. To my mind your stamina pool will naturally increase at a competitive rate the more Life Essences you possess. As for Panache I think the most cost effective method to increase that is either a Life Essence or bonding the feather. ![]()

Of course, aside from what I've already spent on 'Ruza with the new Solar Bloodline--which I'll note on the sheet once Valjoen acknowledges it--I really don't know what I'm going to spend them on. In fact, I think I might actually be at the limit for maximum essences per item according to character level on some of my items. The Limit only applies to Weapon Abilities, not the Weapon itself. "Weapon Special Ability: 1 ethereal essence per +1 value
Personally, though, if I were Garidan and had been transformed by an evil witch, I would be dumping 6 Essences into getting the Spell Resistance ability that lets good magic slide through. "Spell Resistance: 2 ethereal essence (any) for 5+Lvl SR, 4 additional ethereal essences for 10+Lvl SR, auto-pass for beneficial spells." My opinion, is that if one cannot figure out how to spend essences one is temporarily suffering from a lack of imagination. :-p ![]()

![]() Not to be a bother, but I think we may have actually fought the bird-orc-axe guy dude at the very beginning of the fight. When this orc died he dropped an Ethereal Essence that returned to the Asulad's staff. This essence and the essence reclaimed from the female rogue completed this staff, and all the orcs in the initial battle (who weren't hags) were glowing from the staff. May I add a # to that wrap up list? 7. I want to grab the magic items on the two orcs the one that turned into a bird at the end of the last battle (the male orc) and the female rogue. As for the next steps, there are several loose ends in the First Lands that I wanted to finish before continuing on with the Hazard plot. 1. Prevent the Dreaming from collapsing. The elven matriarch asked us to secure and fix the "Daguják, the Making Stones" in order to save the Dreaming. It is unclear to me whether these are different standing stones than "Eh’semghédôm," the Ruination, that we accidentally exploded. Verthag referred to them as such here. Are these stones the same stones? If they are, I have a plan to fix them that I shared with them last year. 2. Fix the binding that secured Ygrna, the Bone Mother, like my grandmother asked me to which she called me back to the First Lands. 3. Break down the relic bows and distribute their essences among the party now that I know how to do that. Some of these things just require down time activity and role-playing, but I wanted you to know about them. After these tasks are done, and we start back back with the Hazards, Rhykal asked us to go grab the Hazard of Evocation or Abjuration next. I am open to either, what are your guys' thoughts? As for Gruskorb, I'm happy enough to keep playing him if you guys think I'm doing a good job. I don't want the tree plot thread going defunct. I would be more open to recruiting a new character to fill his slot when and if the GM's schedule slows down and we can pick up daily posting again. I have so much sympathy for our GM's position what with his responsibilities at the bank, his own legal practice, and helping his wife recover. All very important. All more important than the game (though I do hope that we can return to how the game was a couple of years ago.) However, I think it would be hugely unfair to ask a new player to get excited about the campaign build a complex character and then for us only to progress the story once every 1-2 weeks. ![]()

![]() Participated in Siege of the Diamond City @ Gencon (7-8 tier); 1st part was a blast, the repetitions in the 2nd half less so -- but that's for a different place. Here's the question:
Spoiler:
"5% discount on magical items that require a spell with the Good descriptor" and Holy weapons: how does this work with the way weapons are upgraded in PFS? Example: I have a +1 weapon. I'd ultimately like it to be a +3 Holy weapon. As I see it, my options are as follows (and yes, I may be over-thinking this):
2) only the Holy modifier gets a discount. This results in me getting the Holy enchant last when it's most expensive (get the +3 before the Holy). 3) the Holy modifier and any other modifiers added at that time receive the discount. This means that I should stay with my +1 until I have both the cash and the prestige to jump from +1 to +3 Holy. From a role-playing perspective:
Bean-counter response:
(option 2): is it his 1st Holy weapon of this type? 5% discount (option 3): is the old weapon non-Holy and the new weapon Holy? 5% discount Obviously, I'm hoping #1 is how this is supposed to work, and I think it most beneficial as it is most likely to result in more Holy weapons in the field... but I'd rather ask than guess. Thanks for the time! |
