APPEARANCE:
Nikolai is a fit young man with dark black hair framing a handsome face that gives him an air of respect. Olive skin covered with various tattoos common among Varisian but none compare to an amazingly distinct birthmark on his left check in the shape of a bird whose feathery tail curls around his left eye. He is garishly dressed and adorned with multiple colorful scarves. Nikolai moves with the dangerous grace of a jungle cat and commands attention with his bearing whenever he walks into the room. When Nikolai speaks people listen. A warm smile and startling blue eyes make him very approachable. Sometimes his deep blue eyes seem distracted as if he were looking at things very far away. It is as if he was watching some complex totality that absorbed most of his attention. Few would have realized how far his perception extended, how much he saw at a glance, how much he heard and knew. BACKGROUND:
You wish to hear my tale? It is a song that will one day be worth singing. An eternal dance to the tune of an immortal patroness.
My song began with my first cries fresh from the womb. A child born free on the road with a covered caravan wagon for a home. My birth song was harmonious with the tearful laughter of my mother and boastful joy of my father. Our chorus of awe and joy gave homage to the songbird perched on my cheek, a goddess' kiss that promised my life would be a special song indeed. As a child I began to dance and the world was my stage. I danced from town to city and everywhere in between. The dance of Varisian scarves both beautiful and deadly. I danced for love's patroness' delight blessed in her sight. As I danced throughout the lands, I learned many songs. Shoanti songs so proud and fierce. Ancient songs of elvish words and the lamentation song of halflings too. Chelaxian anthems to frighten the weak. But it was Varisian songs that spoke to my heart. The songs were written on my soul and skin in bright blue. Ever love's songbird shown brightest and true as it was the kiss of a goddess. This is my song. The song of the Inquisitor of Love. The seeker of lost art. Deadly dancer of love's righteous wrath. It was the songbird on my cheek whose tune lead me ever closer to the Cathedral at Sandpoint. The priests would surely see and listen. Would they know this song? Would they know this dance? So here I sit these many months in Sandpoint's greatest temple, witness to the chosen. The next verse is about to be written and the dance has just begun. SAMPLE POST:
Nikolai sat in the small room absently listening to an old priest extoll the virtues of Abadar's rules of law and their effect on local fishing contracts. It was certainly not his favorite lecture series at the Cathedral but unfortunately it was a required one. The other students in the room were an eclectic group each favoring one of the six gods or goddesses honored at the Cathedral. Not surprisingly those favoring Abadar were paying rapt attention to the lecture and taking furious notes followed closely by Erastil's followers. Of course Desna's faithful were mostly daydreaming which brought disdainful looks from the Sarenrea adherents who were patiently enduring the lecture. The devotees of Gozreh were split between those interested in the talk because it touched on the sea and those rebuking the furtive flirtations of Nikolai's fellow enthusiast of Shelyn. Nikolai was humming a tune mentally composing a love ballad meant to convince Lorile, a young lady in the employ of the local brothel, into finding new employment. He was barely into the first stanza when Nikolai realized that the room had gone deathly silent and all attention was on him. "Radavaski! Who has superior fishing rights on disputed seas between local fisherman and a traveling fleet?", the professor asked looking at Nikolai impatiently. Nikolai's mind raced trying to formulate the proper answer. He noticed haughty snicker of one of Abadar students and gave that student a quick wink before attempting the answer with a warm smile. Much to everyone's surprise Nikolai's answer was correct causing the professor to shift his interrogation towards a student on the other side of that room. Nicolai let out a sigh of relief and mouthed a silent thank you to the cute young Abadar student that had conveniently left her notes on the very answer needed in plain view. A few minutes later, first bell rang and Nikolai rushed from the room with the rest of the students. He approached his benefactor with a grin,"I am in your debt Toralyn. You saved me from an afternoon of scribing and for that I am most thankful!" Toralyn gave Nikolai an appraising look,"Be careful what you promise Niko as you might just get more than you bargained! Perhaps I may need an escort for the Swallowtail Festival especially one that can dance!" "It would be my honor to join you in a dance,"Nikolai said with a mischievous smile,"and whatever other services you may need!" "Get a room you two!" commented one of Toralyn's companions. Toralyn's cheeks flushed red before she turned and walked away. As she turned the corner, Nikolai glimpsed her giving her companion a hard elbow in the side. The Swallowtail Festival promises to be memorable. Surely Toralyn doesn't expect to be my only dance partner for the festival. I promised Lorile a dance too and Elaina. I am sure they will understand....
