Nithaca is a remarkably lovely woman of silver eyes and coal-colored skin. She keeps her black, tightly-curled hair cropped short to her scalp. She dresses dramatically in white and silver. Around each wrist is the progression of the moon wrought in silver from new to full. These appear to be tattoos, but are in fact birthmarks. Character Notes:
Nicatha's mother, Ifa, always told her daughter that she was conceived when her mother slept beneath the light of the full moon. For her part, Nicatha imagines the truth of her conception to be rather more prosaic. Her view is not widely shared. Ifa is a princess of the Ajwe. In Lakkara, the Ajwe are feared and respected. If a princess claims that the moon impregnated her, then this elicits little more than raised eyebrows and hidden smirks. The fact that Nicatha was born with silver eyes and strange silver birthmarks was taken as a sign that she was a child of the spirits. This sign was seen as certainty as Nicatha grew of age. She was a strange child -- beautiful, but strange. She knew things that she should not, could not know. The moon, they said, whispered in her ear. But it was not just secrets, there was also her magic. Lakkara is not some backwards kingdom. It had its own proud mystical traditions. Yet hers seemed strange and somehow otherworldly. Some whispered that Nicatha must have eaten her twin in the womb. That fratricide was the source of her power. Others who had knowledge of the dead claimed that they had seen her speaking with elven spirits. Whispers are wind, and perhaps they would have blown away in time, if the drought had not come to Lakkara. Then whispers grew into a roar. Some said that the drought was caused by the Ajwe harboring sin in their palaces. To appease the gods and end the drought the night-spawn must die. Others said, should we anger the spirits as well as the gods. The moon might take it amiss if it saw its daughter's blood staining the dust. Exile. That was their solution. It would appease the gods but not anger the spirits. Nicatha set forth from the dominion of the Ajwe sundered from family, bereft of their name. As she walked west, she was followed by a family of vanara. That night, as she knelt to drink from a river and eat some nuts she had collected during the day, they approached her. "Daughter of the old moon, where are you going?" Although she was exiled she did not lack for hospitality, Nicatha offered them some of her nuts. "West. I go from the palaces of the Ajwe." The vanaras shook their head. "It is not west but east that you should be walking, sister of the sun. We have seen you in the east. Do not walk against fate, young one, or you will walk twice as far." Nicatha shrugged. It did not matter to her where she walked east or west. But there was little wisdom in ignoring cryptic advice when following it is no hardship. She would walk where the heavens willed. |
