All was joy and merriment when the Yohansante, a family of Bekyar traders who lived in Osibu, found out they were expecting a child. The shamans predicted the child would be a powerful boy, blessed with great juju talents. Instead, Fumnanya died weeks after his mother gave birth to him and a torturous process of pain and suffering began: five more times the mother became pregnant, and five more times the child died less than a year after birth. The shamans, after conferring with the spirits of the house's ancestors, discovered that Fumnanya had become a desperate spirit who clung to the hope of one day surviving, so it insisted in being born again and againt to the Yohansantes, no matter how much suffering it caused. Many wise men tried in vain to banish the spirit and help it pass into the afterlife, but Fumnanya paid them no heed. A wandering cunning woman who served the Lantern King heard of the family's plight and decided she could help, especially because the Yohansante mother was strong and handsome. She went to her house and proposed the mother, the father and the wandering woman herself would all sleep and play together for six months; during that time, the cunning woman would wear the mother's clothes and perfumes, whilst the mother would do the same with the cunning woman's robes and perfumes. Finally, they played together one last time when both women were fertile; when it was the Lantern King's servant's turn, the spirit mistook her for his mother, and tried to occupy her barren womb. The plan worked perfectly, but the cunning woman was a trickster and a trickster's help always comes with a price. When the spirit was inside her, it realised it had been tricked but would not give up. He knew the woman was a trickster, so he asked her to play a prank on the Yohansantes and let him go to his mother's womb once again: after all, the holy woman promised a healthy child, not that Fumnanya would leave the family alone. The holy woman laughed and laughed and liked the idea, so she gave him another chance. Instead of leaving immediately and destroying the spirit, she stayed in Osibu for many other weeks, continuing to play with the mother alone and in secret. This made the future mother's body and soul all open and accepting, and one day Fumnanya made the jump back into his mother's body. The family did not laugh when, many years later, their quiet and beautiful boy, Ngozi wise beyond his six years of age, had a seizure and out of his nose and mouth and ears out came a green liquid that solidified in the shape of a deformed newborn baby with 6 umbilical cords. The Yohansante's continued with their lives as normally as they could after that. They loved their child very much, but it brought them grief to see him playing with the dreadful spirit and knowing that the phantom that had tortured them for so long was always going to be part of Ngozi. It came to no one's surprise when the boy, who had by then grown and become a strange and strong man, decided to leave Osibu. Since then, Ngozi has made his living as a medium, helping people to overcome the grief and loss associated with losing a loved one. This phantom was inspired by the Igbo belief on the ogbanje, a spirit that is born time and again to the same family only so it can die on purpose and bring grief. If you're interested, this belief is a big part of the plots of Octavia Butler's Wildseed and Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.
Personality:
Ngozi's honest desire to provide relief to grieving men and women means that he will not shy away from lying or fooling people. If a corpse won't speak or the cowrie shells prove unsatisfying, he sees no problem in simply lying or manifesting Fumnanya and pretending the phantom is able to speak to the dead, as long as this provides some solace to his clients. Ethics aside, Ngozi is a taciturn man who speaks little and has a peculiar sense of humour that only he and his dead brother seem to appreciate. Fumnanya is forever scarred by his many deaths, each of which was terrifying and painful. Despair and fear -- both emotions which he is happy to sow on his enemies' minds -- led him to this half-life and colour every bitter word and judgemental sigh that escape his tiny mouth. Fiercely jealous of and dependent on his younger brother, Fumnanya believes he is responsible for keeping Ngozi safe. For that, he will often take his incorporeal shape and stealthily investigate their surroundings, spy (which incidentally helps with Ngozi's profession) and pull pranks on people he believes might want to harm his brother.
Appearance:
Ngozi is a strong and tall dark-skinned man who looks much older than his 30 years of life would indicate, with prematurely greying hair and visible wrinkles. Surrounded by a morbid aura of tranquility, he often has an unnatural and pungent smell of rotten fruit and grave dirt; all those things contribute to his presence not being welcomed for very long despite his wise and useful counsel. Fumnanya takes the shape of a sickly baby bloated due to decomposition, with green and greyish tints discolouring parts of his translucent body. His skin is often dotted with pustules and boils, with which he plays when manifested and six grizzly umbilical cords erupt from his belly, playfully slithering in the air. When he speaks, his voice sounds like a child trying to hide the fact it is in immense pain.
