Backstory:

Spoiler:

A few years after his second decade, Nevaal’s house had fallen to a rival drow family’s assault. As a male scout serving a noble family, he knew that there would be no mercy for him even if he were to survive the raid. Only priestesses and descendents of the main line would even be considered for adoption into another house. For Nevaal, his only options were to face death at the hands of drow, or escape to the depths of the underworld. Using a network of similar houseless drow littered throughout the various cave systems, Nevaal made plans to travel to the overworld and discarded his past identity. He denied his heritage, discarding the habits and ways of his people. Nevaal threw away his house’s name and created a name of his own liking. He traded the spider embroidered armor of the drow for traveler’s clothes and a common set of leather armor.. He then cut his hair short to defy the standards of his people as another act of defiance towards his past. Over time, he gained the skills and knowledge of how to conceal his identity from the people on the surface and how to walk amongst them, undetected. Nevaal’s ability to blend in and hide within the shadows helped him get from place to place, but when he needed to make contact with civilization to trade for goods and supplies, hiding alone was no longer good enough. He had to learn how to disguise his features so that he may interact with traders in the cities without alarming them. His first few years were rough on the surface, but eventually he learned how to hide his features well and adapted to the mannerism of surface people. Now he travels the world, not staying in one place for too long for fear of being identified as a drow. Over his near century of life, his time with the people of the surface has taught him to appreciate life and the simple things that make it what it is.

Spoiler:

Nevaal is a thin man, even for drow standards, just shy of his first century of age. A male exile of the underdark with no house to claim him is worth less than nothing in drow society. The traditional long hair and spider adorned garments of drow noblemen did not suit the runaway in the least. To be able to walk freely in the overworld, Nevaal has to hide his appearance lest he alarm a surface dweller or be spotted by a drow scout. Long travelers’ clothing, a cloak, and gloves cover the majority of his ebony skin, and a hood does well to hide most of his telling drow features; a scarf and some bandages help to cover the rest of his face. A mixture of various berries and plants make a suitable dye to discolor his hair and visible skin, just in case a curious onlooker tries to have a closer look. Lastly, Nevaal cuts his unkempt hair with his knives as another act of defiance against his heritage. Unfortunately for him, the use of a dagger and the lack of a mirror make for a rather messy and uneven haircut. Luckily, his hair is usually hidden underneath his hood and away from judging critics.
