So only 40+ hours in and still on chapter 1. I get caught up doing the side quests which are better than a lot of game's MAIN campaign.

I know it's a little early but I don't see how this doesn't become my favorite gaming experience of all time.

You had a good run BG2 ... but DAMN. You know what happens to Bhaalspawns? A Witcher gets sent after them.

The ONLY downside to the game I've seen so far is the lower level armor is laughably terrible looking and hard to take seriously so I have to dress for fashion over stats at the start. Luckily griphon rank 1 is at level 8.

To be fair to the mods, it's not their job to make someone's post apply to the forum rules; its ours. Its their job to enforce it.

As for the dryads, as has been discussed, alignment is an ugly business. It might not work great in this instance like many others because the shades of gray are heavy. They are protecting their homelands by whatever means they think is needed and for all we know, they might think what they're doing to the charmed people is a gift to them (a very chaotic way of thinking). I like to think that the rules of the fae/fey along with what's good or evil in their books is going to be a bit alien to how WE see it. We're trying to apply rules to a group of people playing an entirely different game ... so good luck with that heh.

Still picking these up and I'm still finding myself entertained. For the guy to be doing this all himself, mostly, that's enough reason to keep supporting him.

I have no idea what ACG stands for so ... no? Heh.

I know her taste is all over like mine, liking pretty elf dudes as well as more hairy, grizzled men (Bigby Wolf from Wolf Among Us a good example, as well as Thorin Oakenshield as he's portrayed in the movies).

I will also agree to something else you mentioned as my wife actually generally plays female characters that dress in a manner that people would assume a male designed, heh. So I'm not really for taking away any of these things from artbooks but including all types of things as has been repeated.

So as I don't write a wall of text, I'll try and keep it simple to say all things SHOULD be fair. I have no idea if they ever will be but it doesn't mean we should ever stop trying to make them so and let our voices fizzle out. I'm a straight man myself but I'm married to a woman who appreciates a smexy man as much as the next girl. She agrees that currently the only male character appealing in her eyes (physically) is Seltyiel. Valeros has had maybe a picture or two she didn't hate but usually something's off for her.

However, as has been discussed quite a bit, tastes are all over the place for women AND men or varying leanings. I'm a weird case where I don't think I have a "type". Female elves can be hot (though some of Golarions don't appeal to me when the eyes get TOO big and bug eyed but luckily not all of their art follows in this direction) but I can like female dwarves just as much and even the half orc lady paizo has isn't bad at all. Size 4 or 24, I don't care though truth be told, most of the smaller sized/thinner types don't appeal to me as much as a healthier form contrary to what I'm constantly told by commercials and ads I should enjoy as a man (ugh and co-workers).

Likewise, my wife's tastes can be pretty fantasy elves to hairy muscular men.

All that being said, it is funny how there are far more ugly men drawings/creatures then female. I also do not agree with the stories behind nymphs and dryads being female only, a thing we've changed in our own worlds/games. I honestly found most of those stories to likely all be male fantasies and wishing to keep it women only for their own appeal.

Bah, still turned into a wall of text >_<

Old topic but I just wanted to chime in a bit as well.

I've seen many posts about this going one way or another and something I've just seen for myself with time is also the reason why some people love to play the opposite gender, some people hate it, some people go both ways and so on and so on.

First, to note, I'm ok with people playing whatever they want to play. I really don't care. Let fun be fun so long as this fun is infringing on other people's fun in very blatant matters (I'm not going into details but there are some things that are universally frowned upon).

I've never really played/created any character I've been attached to that wasn't a guy. When I sit down to play, I'm doing it to throw myself completely into this character that has a piece of me inside of them. All of my characters do in some regard despite their personality, taking whatever part I think I haven't touched upon or explored. My wife plays with me and I really greatly enjoy RPing with her with relationships and all that good stuff too (and she's the same way playing just women).

HOWEVER, the reasons I roleplay/create a character/etc are not always the same as everyone else's and I think, often times, this is where we get lost and why people disagree. We don't all roleplay or game the same way. We don't all have the same interests or desires out of what we're looking for; both out of our games and out of our characters. I want to put myself in the role of my character and see the world through them. I'm most comfortable as a guy so that's how I do it. Some people are most comfortable as other genders and a LOT of people don't necessarily feel this way at all.

Some people play to BE someone or something else entirely. We all escape a bit into our characters but where are we trying to go is different. The stories and experiences we're trying to find are different. If the story and experience you want is whatever gender/race/color/class/blahblah combination than FANTASTIC! If people feel as wonderful as I do after creating and enjoying a character for their own wants and desires, then that's awesome.

This hobby is about FUN and CREATIVITY in my mind and the more people on board for some of that, however they want to get there, is nothing short of wonderful. I can't have fun playing a girl? Tons of people can and woohoo! Don't like playing your life's gender or situation? Other people do so woohoo as well!

TLDR; Keep in mind we all play for whatever reasons and they may not be the ones your playing for. Let people play what they like and are comfortable with and don't pretend to be better than anyone else because they don't do what you think they should do.

NEW VEGAS was fixed pretty quickly after release, to be fair, and now it's completely fine. Unlike FALLOUT 3, which is temperamental to get to work on Windows 7 and 8, which is ironic, especially given how reviewers didn't mention FALLOUT 3's many bugs on release but went to town on NV's (for reasons more throroughly explored in the other thread).

To be fair, NWN2 when it first came out? It was awful dude. I bought it day one and after getting frustrated with bugs and glitches and stuff, I just put it down for a few months. When I came back, they had a lot cleaned up but it was not acceptable out of the gate.

I like this take on i the most I think:

"A whole bunch of little kids can now play as Cap or Thor without weird looks, so maybe it’s not all about how bitter you are this time?"
— Writer and artist Jason Latour, Wolverine and the X-Men, Edge of Spider-Verse, Southern Bastards, The Winter Soldier

And that's fantastic and you might even have a hard time finding that many people who disagree with how awesome that is!

But the downside is that instead of just GIVING people something, they're also taking away something. Why not two hammers? Two Thor's? Two people possessing his gifts? They once talked, I believe, that the hammer just helps Thor channel his powers now and it's pretty much all him. If that's so, someone else getting the hammer shouldn't take his Thunder God status away ... but it's being talked up like it will so we'll see. If it does, you're taking away from the people that enjoy the stories of Thunder God Thor Version 1 for whatever version we're on now for this one. It sucks for me a bit as I just started reading Thor with God of Thunder series, getting into the character because of the movies and I've adored it all. I pick up all of like 2 to 3 comics a month for myself and that was one, dropping Wolverine (Thor and Wolverine are now tied for favorites) due to the whole hype of "LETS KILL WOLVERINE CAUSE WE CAN!! WOOOHOOO!!!"

And here's something that bothers me and worries me over the future Thor comic that's focusing on THOR Thor (as in, the actual son of Odin). He does something ... screws up ... and is not worthy.

If Thor screws up bad enough that he's not worthy of the hammer? That scares the CRAP out of me. I like reading about heroes being heroic and selfless acts and all that stuff. Thor's pretty great with that while also being a character that feels very fantasy in a modern world which I adore. However, if he does something that screws him up with the hammer and it stays that way, it kind of seems like he'd have to stay in a darker path ... so I'm out. I don't want to read about that. Which means I'm out all together. It's not my job to jump through whatever hoops some company decides for me who says "deal with it" when I can simply stop reading until the stories I like come back (I hope). Same thing goes with Captain America even though I have less vested interest in that character. The Winter Soldier made me respect the Falcon hard core and Anthony Mackie was amazing. Would absolutely LOVE to see him as Captain America and putting on the costume.

... but did you really have to take away Steve Rogers to make that happen? I guess they think "yes" so it's a natural transition of sorts; a passing of the mantle. But for the people that wanted to keep reading about Steve Rogers in some manner, it's probably depressing. At least when Bucky was Captain America at the end, they both existed (when Cap came back from the time traveling bullet or whatever that was).

I'm keeping an eye on Thor to see what happens and see if I want to continue forward, so I'm buying month by month now and no longer just have it in my box. If I see something that seems forced or happen to be right about the fall of Thor and him staying darker then I just walk away and stay out of Marvel for a bit.

TLDR; I like new things but I don't see the point of taking away other things people like to make it happen. Their all made up stories anyway so I know there's a way to create new characters in these roles without hurting the old ones.

Well mine should be in the mail today. I'm pretty excited as I'm quite happy to sit down and teach my daughter D&D with a system that seems pretty easy to play from the start and HOPEFULLY not get too out of hand in later levels.

Of course in true D&D fashion with friends and no rules lawyers, we'll probably make up a fair bit and focus on FUN over anything else :D

She's 11 and I told her the four classes. She asked which each of them did and when I explained the rogue/thief class her eyes lit up and a grin of mischief hit her.

Oh, I don't think so. I can easily see a legitimate criticism against the need to put br on a lizard woman to pander to juvenile male desires.

(Edited words not to flag at work :P)

Just to add another perspective to this since I notice some guys trying too hard to knock guys for putting a chest on everything that moves (and I'm not saying this wasn't the case).

But my wife is not small up top. None of the characters she creates are small up top. The outfits she puts them in, some of them you might think "A guy made that because they're lonely". But that's actually what SHE likes to play as a girl. And even if its a dragonborn or some half dragon thing, she LIKES making her characters like her. Not a juvenile. Not a man. And not a desire in the sense quoted.

Of course I won't say you're wrong either since maybe they are pandering BUT keep an open mind that people are individuals and that every person has their own likes and dislikes and that there are women who like these things.

That is all.

Just to make it clear I have read and will be reviewing the posts listed here. Thank you all for the great advise and different sites to try. The solution might be a bit of all and less than just one. Starting a PbP game with her and her mother is a good start but as I want her to meet and interact with other kids like her as well I'll have to look into other sites as well.

Liberty's Edge

The problem with that is all it does is give her a game where I was looking more for an online forum type place for her to creatively write and RP with other similar children without the fear of, as you said, creepy adults sneaking in or trying to talk to them.

Basically a child friendly/only way to introduce her to a free-form type of roleplay. I could try to get her involved in a very very G/PG Play by Post but I'm not looking to have her self esteem crushed by others since she IS just 11.

Liberty's Edge

And not to exclude, if you happen to know off hand from a younger family member (niece, nephew, brother, sister, cousin etc etc etc), I had a question to ask.

It has come to my attention that my 11 year old daughter is interested in roleplaying. I've known for some time she's always had the creative streak and enjoyed writing stories and making up adventures to play with the kids at school (magical cats, fairies, girls with special powers, etc etc) but after an incident involving Miiverse I'm starting to think she's also looking for a written creative community.

What we found as other people tried to talk about normal life stuff, she was trying to roleplay these creative, magical scenarios and abilities.

Now to start with she wasn't supposed to be on her DS doing this in the first place but after my wife and I started reading through the posts we discovered a weird problem besides her sneaking behind our backs like a turd; she was being ignored. Her posts were longer, more creative, and incredibly thought out for a kid her age while, as I mentioned about, these others kids were just playing "high school" (nothing inappropriate mind you and like all silly kids, when they actually GET to high school they're going to feel stupid for fantasizing about it.)

Now I've tried to do Gaming sessions before and that can let out some of that creative spark but even I know there IS a joy of actually taking the time to write out and convey what your character is doing through text instead of trying to act it out. The story seems more alive.

... but how the heck is she supposed to do that?

So the question to go with this story is this; does anyone know a kid friendly (if not kid ONLY) website where young children can try and roleplay with one another in a free-form fashion with the website/forum/posts monitored constantly (which I would be doing myself anyway but it's nice to know that a site has a zero tolerance policy.)

If anyone knows, please help a parent out. Thanks.

Derek, I don't need to be past a certain age to know that everyone, no matter their age, can let their emotions cloud judgment.

Its FANTASTIC people love Pathfinder.

Its FANTASTIC people love 4e.

I come onto these forums and, duh, it's usually how great Pathfinder is and that's awesome. They've really created something here the fans love.

I go and look at the PA forums and it's how great 4e is and that's awesome!

I'm only 31 so I might not be a graybeard (I do have white in my scruff dammit >_< ) but I know better than to claim someone lacks "empathy" just because he doesn't agree with why people got upset and try to explain things another way.

And I do believe people's emotions can be WRONG. I can't even look at politics without getting a little sick of how fear mongering works for both sides and how this side blames that side and how we're ruining everything with blah blah blah.

Upset they don't want your business anymore and tell people they're not worth their time? Yeah that sucks and is worth emotion. But when people got upset at that cartoon back in the day when 4e came out about the troll posting? Nope ... not seeing it.

I don't post a lot and mostly lurk. But when I saw what you said about him it just bothered me. I don't even talk to the guy but I respect him enough to at least say his opinions have never come off as anything but sensible, or at least what I've READ of his (won't say he doesn't have posts where he kicks kittens and curb stomps halflings).

Anyway ... I'll be done with this too. Just had to say my peace.

As for the ACTUAL topic, I've been out of the game long enough to try picking this up. I am looking for something more light weight in complexity. I personally loved 4e's "everyone gets cool stuff" mentality but as hard as it is for me to play now, I'll give Next a solid go and try and get into some more PBP's to get my fix.

Scott gets upset if you attack Wotc (or he perceives an attack). But he'll deny unto the day he dies that the marketing campaign for 4e and 4E Realms (including Bruce Cordell's ridiculous idiocy on Candlekeep followed by the same but through a sock puppet) really ticked off a bunch of "graybeards" (many of whom aren't "gray" nor have beards, having been born in the Seventies and early Eighties).

See, he has a problem with seeing things through anyone else's eyes. You know, that thing called "empathy". All he sees is that some people dislike the object of his fan love, and he feels compelled to defend everything they did from '07 to, well, ten minutes ago, with a ferocity I rarely see in a mother bear protecting her cubs.

I've actually never seen Scott do much outside of trying to break down things and separate them between what actually happened what people conjured in their heads happened.

I didn't like 4th edition at first. The REALMS changes bothered me and a few other things got under my skin and I retreated to Pathfinder like a great many people did.

As I grew older and stopped having a chance to really play ANYTHING as often as I would have liked, I stopped and started looking into games again. I read forums more and even started reading a lot of things that Scott posted and found myself agreeing and self reflecting a good deal about what I was upset about. Books that I bought being obsolete? They're never obsolete. You can keep playing.

Forgotten Realms going through a meat grinder? Well ... yeah a LOT changed against people's will but it's not the first time this has happened. Time of Troubles was a fairly big shake up but since I came in AFTER that, I didn't really care. Same for people that came in AFTER FR switched to 4th and I found some perspective and stopped even caring about the gods that did or did not die. Actually a lot of the FR gods are boring to me anyway so ... eh?

I hated how much hassle spellcasters were and I started looking at 4th edition and realized ... I actually LIKE this now. Its easier. Its fun. I honestly couldn't understand what bothered me about it other than it was different.

Scott has empathy. I think he understands people fairly well enough to call them out on acting silly for being upset about things that might not have gone down the way they constantly tell themselves it did. He defends something he enjoys and I'm happy he does. He's one of the voices of reason I've come to find entertaining on here when I have to slog through comments like this that try to paint him or ANYONE in an unjustly negative light just because they disagree.

Spoiler:

During the movie, after the Queen's death when Thor is trying to talk to Odin, even then he slips a bit like he's going to fall over from exhaustion. Even with Loki being as messed up as he was, if Odin was given the news that Loki was dead, it might have been enough to either;

A) Caused him to fall into the Odin sleep like the first movie when he was under too much stress or ...

B) Made him weak enough and off guard enough for Loki to defeat him quickly and take his spear and either kill him (I doubt) or imprison him (more likely). Imprisoning him would also happen with Option A of course since if he fell asleep, Loki would need to secure him.

That's my thinking anyway

Liberty's Edge

Fantastic movie all around. Jane gets absolutely adorable with her crush on Thor that it just makes me smile.

One slight screw up with the script at the end of the movie I think, spoilering for those who HAVE seen the movie

See also Bioshock Infinite. The cover features only Booker DeWitt, even though the main character that really drives the whole story is Elizabeth (despite her not being the player character), she got pushed to the backside "because marketing!"

This makes me sad. I never even noticed this kind of stuff, sadly enough, until I had a daughter. Now all of it just kind of rubs me wrong. She likes games! (she's only 10 so she won't be playing any of the M rated games anyway like Last of Us and Bioshock)

Spoiler:

Well the very ending of last night's episode put EVERYTHING into perspective. We have a guy dressed EXACTLY like Malcolm Merlyn (in his black archer outfit) show up and tell Black Canary Raz' Al Ghul (sp) wants her to return.

That means when Malcom disappeared many years ago and found " a purpose" he found the League of Shadows. Just like in the first Batman movie, Malcom was sent to Starling City to try and save it, thinking he could do so by purging the Glades, perhaps at the behest of the Shadow group but he probably didn't need much encouragement given what happened to his wife.

Malcom's dead so they send in the Black Canary (is why she shows up just now perhaps) to see how the city is fairing after the Glades were destroyed to see how the city is doing and if that "fixed" it and made it worth saving.

Black Canary is Sarah Lance it seems and she was ALSO taken in by the League of Shadows and is why she's so well trained.

And since she's home, she's not sure she wants to go back ... perhaps?

Well thats what I think anyway.

And the fight scenes in this show ... ugggh. I'm barely a guy at times but that stuff just makes me happy everytime Ollie gets into a scrap. I can't think of any action/fight scenes on TV that makes me as happy as when I watch this show. I've often wondered how much of it is actually the main actor.

I remember reading about the Marketing team for Last of Us not having Ellie on the cover. It was just the guy. The development team had to fight them on it to put her on the cover because she's so important to the story.

Don't know if it was because she was a girl, a kid, or both but I'm glad the developers got what they wanted.

I want Noctis to go back to his original look for Final Fantasy 15 (was 13 versus) T_T

After that, I don't care what they do.

Thanks for the current selections. I'll be doing some research to see if they fall in my line of interest/hero being a hero.

No I mean they have Forgotten Realms in Dungeons and Dragons Online.
You had my attention there, but its level 15 :(

And unless I'm mistaken you're still FROM Ebberon and just visiting FR.

Better/prettier looking models. All the guys look terrible.

Liberty's Edge

I've been reading the Iron Druid chronicles and am about done with them with only one book to go. After I finish it off, I had originally intended to go back to the Dresden books and start on those (only read the first book) but I think I need a break from the "reluctant" hero types.

In the words sung by Bonnie Tyler, "I need a hero."

I'm looking for a fantasy book (can be either modern fantasy or traditional fantasy) where the lead character in the book is just the hero type. Someone who wants to actually help others and make the world a better place. I don't want to read another story of someone forced into it or only does it because no one else will.

I also don't want the protagonist to be physically weak like the Frodo type of hero. Someone capable of handling himself. 1st person or 3rd person is fine.

Anyway, if you've got an idea, please let me know.

That's one reason I keep sticking with Pathfinder ultimately: there's a lot of room for roleplaying and any sort of story you could come up with, but the game still has all the crunch I can sink my teeth into. It's a great middle ground.

It's a good system.

Whatever way you decide is important, best of luck out there dude/dudette/person.

If neither of you are offended by the character designs, Dragon's Crown is pretty fun and a great throw back to side scrolling arcade goodness.

I posted my own personal story without I suppose actually answering any questions but I guess it all comes down to personal preference, Ellis. In your previous relationship, were they a gamer as well? Whichever, did you ever wish it the opposite?

Do you like the idea of "personal time" over "couples time" when it comes to your gaming sessions?

I know if anything happening in my current relationship (like she wised up and realized she's too awesome for me :P) I don't think I could with a non-roleplayer/gamer. I suppose the RP side is WAY more important to me then the tabletop side so thats probably the weird dealbreaker for me. But again, that's ME. Other people have said in thread they'd never want to be with a gamer as its their "me" time.

So what do you think works for you?

The previous two (the only ones I count) were both video gamers, but not table-toppers. The former got into it after we broke up senior year, and we've gamed a few times since, while the latter was doing it when we met but realized they couldn't focus on it and hung it up, though they were still interested in it and liked hearing stories/sitting in on games.

EDIT: Generally the type of person I find myself romantically attracted to (aside from finding them aesthetically attractive) is creative thinker and lover of stories, which is generally the type of person that will enjoy tabletop.

I understand this entirely. It's the same for me and if that's what you really want I PERSONALLY see no issue allowing yourself to have that standard/set that bar. At least when it comes to the whole "this is the forever" relationship.

I do know some tabletop games can be less interesting then others for creative thinkers and lover of stories as you said it. My wife and I met RPing in free form chat like I said and still RP back and forth in e-mails. Some tabletop games can be far more "kill kill loot" but then again we both generally find these more boring (though I have enjoyed a few at times like this).

I've been married 11 years now and though my wife wasn't a "gamer" when we first met, she was into roleplaying which was the most important aspect for me. We met in the yahoo chat back in the day and she loved roleplaying as did I (I actually enjoy the roleplaying aspect of D&D usually above the rest of it). She was always interested in actual table top gaming but just never had a chance to play with anyone and now we play together or we did but we've had a sad dry spell with a severe lack of people to play with.

Even with that we still roleplay our characters with one another and tell stories. I knew before I ever met her that yes, I honestly believed this Gaming/Roleplaying interest pretty much HAD to be there. It's just too much a part of who I am not to share that with someone you want to spend the rest of your life with.

We have to keep in mind the movie itself was pretty bad (though I found enough entertainment) that it can hardly be considered his fault. Plus it's been like 10 years since that movie and people and actors change. No one would have been so enduring to Robert Downing Jr. as Iron Man as they are now if he was still the same man.

I'm not saying he'll be the best but it would be hard to be the worst.

I'm keeping an open mind.

Man i love me dem sweet sweet iconics. Yall can hate all ya want, but honestly they were a necessary addition to the set in my opinion. (remember: every great adventure needs some good pcs, so wizkids/paizo needs to slide them in where they can.) Besides, prior to this set, there were no good gunslinger prepainted minis, so Lirianne fills an important vacancy in the minis world, and while, yes, there are plenty of substitutes for magus characters, i'm sure magus players will enjoy having a specific class mini.
I don't hate Seltiyel, I just didn't see what the big deal about him was. There are still several other Iconics I'd have rather seen ahead of him (Lini, Sajan, Imrijka, Alain, The Summoner, Ninja, Witch, and Samurai whose names I can never remember and they are all ahead of Seltiyel and the Alchemist on my priorities list) is all.

Which again goes back to taste. Out of all iconics, Seltyiel is easily my favorite looking. Most of my characters in games, if I can make it, have white hair (and usually long-ish). I also dig more shirtless looks but more like this rather than some Barbarian dude in a loincloth.

All because of taste.
