Merklii grew up in the dark tunnels of the dwarven mines. But, the physical act of digging, mining, smelting, and crafting didn't appeal to him. To him, the precious metal had a spirit and it spoke to his soul. The other dwarves belittled him mercilessly as he sat quietly in the unused portions of the mine, "listening" to the voice of the raw ore. But, Merklii persevered. The ore did speak to him, and through him. He got strength, and power, from the Ore.
He rose from his silent meditation and started to speak for the Ore for those that could not hear. They listened, and went to listen to the Ore themselves.
Over time, the Ore told him he needed to leave the dark tunnels and take the Ore's Word to the light.
So, Merklii his acolytes and the mine behind, and went to the surface to Speak for the Ore.
