About Max Da Mage

Max did not originally have the Da Mage denomination. He started life as simply Max. His mother and father (both half-orcs themselves), raised him in a remote village. His parents were both rangers who helped the village by hunting for meat and eliminating unwanted beasts. The family was not completely accepted into the village society, but they were tolerated for the benefits they provided the village (especially for keeping wolves away from the livestock in winter).
Max was not persecuted as a child but he had no close friends and was always treated as the “different” child in the village. (Leading to his Monstrous Peacemaker ancestry feat.) Max contributed to the village in his youth by working as a woodsman to provide firewood and building material for the village.
The village included a wizard (Montibank, mostly retired) among its population. This wizard took a liking to Max and took him on as a part time apprentice (at least partly to annoy one of the village busybodies the wizard disliked). Da Mage was added to Max by the youth in the village because of these lessons.
One winter day, while Max was gathering firewood Max combined a cantrip he had been taught with his axe while fighting off a wolf. This surprised Max. When he told Montibank about this surprising (to Max) occurrence, Montibank told Max about the special type of magic user called a Magus. Montibank continued to teach Max magic and enlisted a fighter friend to teach Max martial skills. Max uses a great axe as his main weapon because of his experience as a woodsman in his youth. Max has a short bow because his parents trained him in the use of bows. He plans to get (or craft) a longbow when he can afford one.
