Maly has never known where he came from. His earliest memories are of the monks in the monastery expressing their disapproval. Of course, they only expressed it in the tiniest of facial reactions. Maly was never a good student; he's too impulsive and too expressive. He'd always preferred to be moving than meditating.
Once he was old enough to be on his own, the senior monks hinted that they thought Maly should seek another path in his life.
While Maly was devoted to Irori, he was also very obedient and willingly left to begin his new life. Before long, he was saved from a life-threatening situation that he hadn't even realized was dangerous by some Pathfinders. They seemed like good folks, and Maly followed them back to Absalom and signed up to join the organization.
