Background:

Malterico Volus was born the second son of Athis Volus, head of a minor noble house in Westcrown. His childhood was not an easy one, between the contempt of a father and the constant rivalry with his elder brother. Malterico quickly understood his only way to make his own path in life lied with his cunning, whereas his brother Aricas grew, in Malterico’s opinion, stupid and fat. The boy's father must have also realized this, for he offered Malterico what he needed the most: training and an education. The clerics of the temple of Asmodeus proved to be a perfect match for him, always seeking to give him a taste for knowledge, and a respect for the diabolic price at which it comes.

Malterico took great pleasure in his training and came to realize the common saying was true - "Knowledge is Power". He grew up with this in mind, his thoughts focused on the achievement of great reknown and power. He became a favored pupil of the clerics, who indoctrinated him formally into the faith of the Prince of Hell. He was also instructed in the interrogation of those who hold heretic beliefs in the eyes of the Church, trained not only as a priest, but as a holy combatant. His cunning and silver tongue also became assets for the young man. His religious career was well on its way.

He perfected his skills in writing, eventually catching the attention of representatives of the Thrune government. Thus, he was selected to work at the Ministry of Historical Accuracy, a part of the nation's authorities aiming to establish the One and Only Truth - the vision of the Thrunes, their perception of Chelish History. Rising quickly in the ranks of that organization, he quickly learned first-hand of the latent distrust between the Church of Asmodeus and House Thrune. But Malterico was shrewd. Although his true devotion lay with the church, he realized that his role in government could be used to further his ecumenical ambitions, for neither the Church nor House Thrune was powerful enough to bring order to the Chelaxian empire. He has always seen his association with House Thrune as a mere tool, one he hopes will prove very beneficial for his own career and goals. One day soon, the faith of Asmodeus shall become the one true (and only) faith of all Cheliax.

Malterico has been sent on a mission. He has come to Longacre to spot and excise any locals who would claim themselves as members of the Glorious Reclamation, and to further investigate and report on anything further he learns of this heretical sect of Iomedaean fanatics.
