Backstory:

Malak was born from an Ulfen captive of an orc tribe that moved across Belkzen toward The River Kingdoms before eventually being scattered by a well-defended small town near the border of Ustalav and Razmiran. Malak wasn't around to see it, however, because he escaped as soon as he could and ran off to live on his own in the forest. The leader of the tribe was an orc named Gnorl who was smaller than most orcs but made up for it with his sorcerous powers and cruelty. Gnorl loved to heap punishment upon both his numerous human thralls and the inevitable offspring of these unions. It's unknown who Malak's father was but Gnorl's diminuitive stature in contrast to Malak's massive one indicates that Gnorl was not him. Because of this Malak's mother was killed by Gnorl in an attempt to maintain his control of the tribe. When nobody came forward to admit they were also taking in the comforts of Gnorl's personal property he had the biggest men in the tribe all executed. This obsession with control was ultimately what would get the tribe killed, but before that Malak saw the writing on the wall and left that night, certain that if he stayed either his mind would be enslaved by Gnorl's magic or he would simply be tortured to death.

He eventually wandered over to the forest on the border of Numeria and the River Kingdoms before being picked up and "conscripted" by a mercenary group that dragged him back to their base of operations in Brevoy. His skills and physique were good fits for the mercenary life and though he was taken against his will and much of his money was taken from him as "repayment" for bringing him out of his previous savage existence, he didn't resist much, mostly because he was unsure of what was going on. He was illiterate and strong, making him the perfect grunt. The commander of that group was named Junaid and he too was a half-orc. Junaid was cruel in a way different from Gnorl's psychopathy. Junaid was utterly callous. He kidnapped Malak and trained him because he saw a potential investment in him. He taught Malak more refined ways of swinging an ax because he didn't want a raging orc warrior scaring away potential employers and because he was interested in Malak's ability to survive. When Malak learned how much of the money he was earning was going into Junaid's pockets instead of his own Junaid had him beaten for insubordination. Eventually Junaid was killed in action leading to the dissolution of the company. Each man went his separate way, leaving Malak to once again wander.

Eventually he learned to read. He ran to Brevoy and found occasional freelance work as an enforcer or a bouncer. Again with the assumptions that because he is part orc and large he is stupid people would try to cheat him. He eventually was arrested for killing a small-time-not-quite crime lord. He was in prison for about a year before being released.

House Surtova made the assumption that he would not make the obvious connection that they were hoping for either a friendly government or even a full-on puppet state. Once again, he's smarter than people gave him credit for.

He accepted but has no intention of doing so, hoping instead to bring about a government that allows him to maintain personal power so that he may never be taken advantage of or abused again, as well as to take the money.

Or so he says.

Personality:
His background has made him not particularly book smart and lacking people skills but his brawn and odd tendency to survive trials that kill many has made him somewhat successful as far as half-orcs in human societies go. Despite many people assuming his size and ethnicity make him stupid and constantly trying to take advantage of him he is not foolish. He hides it well but he hates those questions of his intelligence. His background has made being taken advantage of a touchy subject, though he is willing to take advantage of people thinking he is just a big dumb killer.

He comes across as cynical, pragmatic and cold, the way one with a background of abduction, abuse and solitary survival would have to be. He doesn't break contracts because that would threaten his next contract. He doesn't generally break his word because nobody will pay a mercenary who doesn't do what he says he will do. Because of his background and the fact that he only learned to read recently he has never really put much thought into morality or other higher things. Religion, philosophy, literature, these aren't important to him. He believes in gods when they heal him or when they hurt him. He thinks about Mathematics when he is calculating his pay. He does experience emotion however. He takes some measure of pride in his ability to survive things. He has survived a sadistic sorcerer of a foster father, life as a crime enforcer, being jailed, systemic abuse by employers, and he will survive the Green Belt and the little power games of the Brevoy Nobility too. That being said he had a simple existence and now he is moving to the Green Belt because he is being hired to do so. Or at least so he says.

He is looking for a purpose now, even if he lacks the self-awareness to know it himself or the ability to articulate such. Much of his life has been about him reacting to what others have done. He ran from Gnorl, he was kidnapped by Junaid, he was sent to the Green Belt by House Surtova, he wants to help run the kingdom in the future because he has a subconscious desire for agency.
