Backstory
---------------------
To Professor Zelvran,
Could you please send me a summary of Ms Lucretia Vernisant’s progress this term. She and young Lord Laverton have been caught graffitiing the faculty office again with their ‘pro-democracy’ and ‘Women’s Equality’ slogans. We need to cautiously investigate grounds for academic suspension so as not to upset the Lavertons or the Vernisants at such an early stage.
Your friend,
Torvin.
Dean of Students.
-----------------------------------------
My Esteemed Dean,
A summary of Ms Vernisant’s academic abilities follows.
Ancient History (Dr Strepfon): Ms Vernisant is an engaged and extremely capable student. Her most recent essay on the Founding Wars was meticulously researched and accurate. However she must learn to stick to the established facts as she often spouts unorthodox theories as to the motives of Taldaris and other historical figures.
Suspension not recommended.

Modern History (Dr Paleogus): The student has missed the last three lectures and has not attended a seminar this term. When questioned on the subject she said “Since you just want to teach out-dated tripe your course isn’t worth my time.” Her latest essay ‘Senatorial Reform under Stavian I’ was a thinly disguised political diatribe and was not worth the paper it was written on. Her ideas on social progress and reform are dangerous and she does not take heed of my warnings; progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged. Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected and prune practices that ought to be prohibited.
Suspension strongly recommended.

Arcane Advancements within Taldor’s Economy (Professor Mendeyev): Ms Vernisant has a strong opinion of her own abilities which may be true but that is not matched by her efforts within the academic classroom. If a topic does not take her fancy, then she will choose not to engage and twist the matter onto something she finds personally interesting. Unless she completes her essay on the ‘Uses of Divination to procure contracts’ then she will need to repeat this class.
Suspension not recommended – but the young lady needs a warning to stay focussed on the prescribed syllabus.

Applied Politics and the Art of Diplomacy (Professor Merosett): Lucretia is an excellent student who is deeply committed to both the class and subject. She is always a vocal presence (occasionally too much so) in our debates and has achieved some of the highest scores in her cohort. Her most recent work on normalising diplomatic relations was interesting and insightful, although Qadira was an unfortunate example and she would have been better served to choose a less contentious target – such as Brevoy or Kyonin.
Suspension not advised – it would be a waste of a promising student.

General reflections (Professor Zelvran): Overall there seems to be no grounds for academic suspension. Ms Vernisant’s grades are generally high when she applies herself and her teachers, with the exception of Dr Paleogus, speak well of her.

However the university has ample grounds based on her conduct, even when taking her heritage into account. Her association with the student body ‘The Children of Taldaris’ has had a most unfortunate influence on her thinking. Whether or not she is being led astray by other students is irrelevant as the discretion, humility and respect for both the University of Oppara and our great nation has been sadly lacking for well over a year now. Since we cannot expel either Lord Laverton or Ms. Vernisant’s for fear of family reprisal, I recommend that a temporary suspension is awarded to Ms Vernisant unless she publically renounces The Children and conforms rigorously to academic orthodoxy until the end of the year.

I remain your humble friend,
Demetrius Zelvran.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lucretia Tatyana Vernisant was born into a privileged and large well-connected family within Taldan society, descended from the great general Arnisant, who commanded Taldan forces during the Shining Crusade. She grew up being schooled in the arts of Taldan society and attending all of the society events, however Lucretia, unlike her siblings, had her own personal take on the situation in Taldor and grew tired and frustrated with her family’s fierce Imperialist support and nationalist fervor. In order to remove Lucretia from under their feet, she was sent to board at the University in Oppara, with the hopes she may learn more respect under the careful watch of the Professors.

At first Lucretia kept her head down and stuck rigidly to academic orthodoxy until a fateful lecture in her second year. Princess Eutropia, the Universities most famous alumnus, visited to deliver a lecture to the students entitled ‘Taldor, past, present and a glorious future’. It was not the pre-approved bland sycophancy that the university had expected however. Eutropia delivered a rousing speech, laying out her sweeping vision for a revitalised Taldor, freed from the constraint of the past, and by the time she left the Princess had made a radical out of Lucretia.

She immediately joined The Children of Taldaris, a student ‘debating society’ which advocated radical reform and weren’t afraid to make their views heard. Soon Lucretia was at the vanguard of the student radical movement, putting up inflammatory posters, joining protests in the streets and painting ‘pro-democracy’ slogans over every public building, and more than a few private ones.

Her best friend, Lord Vincent Laverton, had entrée to all the best high society parties, having not been so estranged from his own family, and the two would often attend as a ‘couple’, before shocking the assembled nobility with mock-debates, high flung speeches and the occasional dramatic protest. Unfortunately, ‘reform’ is a dirty word in Opparan high society and Lucretia’s political convictions has left her on the brink of suspension when an invitation arrived from one Martella Lotheed…
