When Garrath drops a large meaty hand on the Lord Mayor, Uriana drops her crossbow and draws her longsword. Grobaras looks at the hand and then Uriana. The Lord Mayor waves the captain of the guard off, then looks up at Garrath, "I know you mean well. But I am still the Lord Mayor here. You would do well to remember that. You have done Magnimar a great service this day. Do not ruin it by having me cast you into the Hells." Garrath crossed a line with the Lord Mayor when he grabbed him. But he will overlook this affront because of the service Garrath has performed.

From the Pathfinder Wiki. It offers a glance at how I have played the Lord Mayor:
The Office of the Lord-Mayor is one of the two ruling bodies of Magnimar alongside the Council of Ushers though in reality due to the constant internal squabbling amongst the council the Lord-Mayor is by far Magnimar's most politically powerful person. The current Lord-Mayor is Haldmeer Grobaras an embodiment of the very worst abuses that can come from such a position. Haldmeer has claimed the largest residence in the city, Defiant's Garden as his own, he wears only the finest and most expensive Chelaxian fashion and makes many important decisions based almost entirely on the quality of the bribe each side offers him. In theory the Lord-Mayor has to obey any mandate agreed upon by the Council of Ushers, the current mayor has however completely ignored council mandates on several occasions. The Lord-Mayor is allowed to issue his own mandates to deal with important and immediate issues, these decree do not have to be approved by the council. Haldmeer however has abused these powers using them to issue horribly biased and sometime downright damaging decrees. The only thing that has prevented the current mayor doing far more damage to the city is that his assistant Valanni Krinst, the man who has to actually implement the Lord-Mayor's decrees ignores or alters many of them. (The Lord Mayor is more like a King in many ways.)

The Lord Mayor begins to calm down with Flynn and Elektra's comments, "Then find who this Lamia Matriarch was working for. You will be well compensated." Then he added looking at Brandark and then the whole party, "Thank you all for what you did today."

He then looks at Garrath with a glance toward Flynn, "You are right. I am greedy. It has served me well. But it has served Magnimar well too. The Bazaar of Sails is one the greatest markets in all of Golarion. And my greed has allowed it to prosper. Magnimar prospers because I want the best from all over the world. Everyone in this city prospers because of it." He then looks down, "But you have made me see that I have put wealth ahead of people. I am sorry for that."

The Lord Mayor's aide Vallani Krinst was nearby. A couple of Varisian servants were behind Krinst, including the young Varisian girl that Garrath helped to clean up the broken tea cup. All three had looks of utter surprise on their faces. None of them had ever heard the Lord Mayor apologize for anything.

This day would be the beginning of a change in Gorbaras. He would begin to put people ahead of his personal wants. The transition would be slow, but the Lord Mayor would become a better man and a better Mayor.

We are posting around the same time.

The Lord Mayor shakes off both Garrath and Flynn's comments, "OK. I am greedy. I like the good life. There are many in this city, Korvosa, Riddleport, throughout Varisia, Cheliax all over that seek wealth. But why would a Lamia care about the greed of Magnimar and its Lord Mayor? From what I heard about Lamias, they too seek power and wealth. Why would this creature care about my greed? Explain this to me?"

The Lord Mayor was not immediately seen. You will later find him hiding under his bed. Eventually, he fearfully comes out of the estate, still shaken from the attempt on his life, and looks over the dead Lamia Matriarch that Garrath drops at his feet. He had never seen such a creature. He had heard of them, of course, "I still don't understand why this creature wanted to kill me? Why would it care about greed? These creatures carry no virtue." Frustrated, he yells out, "There is something more to this. I must know what this is about."

The Lord Mayor turns to the party. "I need to know why this creature attacked me. The whole story! You will be well rewarded."

Khet Igersen and the Merchants were not evil. One was wearing a magical ring. Another had an ornate magic dagger at his side. These chaps were legitimate. They were upset that the Lord Mayor had more than doubled his guard, but their request for greater protection fell upon deaf ears. "I am the Lord Mayor. I can use city resources. You cannot," Grobaras said to the Merchants matter of factly. "You will need to use your own resources to hire greater protection." The Merchants left frustrated and irritable.

The Lord Mayor responds to Elektra's explanation. "Greedy. Everyone in Magnimar is greedy. This city was built on greed. Magnimar wouldn't exist without greed. Greed is the engine that fuels this city's economy." He paces a bit, then looks at Garrath helping the serving girl pick up broken cup pieces. He rolls his eyes and continues, "Norgorber cults are adept at murder, but usually for hire. I am not aware of their cult members having an aversion to greed. In fact they can be a greedy lot themselves." The Lord Mayor seems to know way too much about Norgorber cults. "No. If a Norgorber cult was involved, then they were likely hired. This obsession with greed is something different. Maybe this creature was stiffed on a deal, maybe a deal with the city." Gorbaras ponders that thought as if that may be likely.

Before the Lord Mayor comes out into the courtyard, the party begins the process of locking and securing all ways in to the compound. Through the day you will check the female staff. How do you go about doing that? Do you do anything with the Merchants when they arrive?

When the party arives at Defiant's Garden, the estate of the mayor, the obese bureaucrat was asleep. A tall dour man named Khonderian meets the party and speaks with a Chelaxian accent, "We have stables for your horses. There is a staff kitchen. Meals are served there only before dawn and after dusk. For now, keep guard here in the courtyard." It was obvious that the party was expected.

Several boring hours later, the Lord Mayor Grobaras comes out of the manor house and into the courtyard. He is followed by a middle aged aristocrat and a young serving girl holding a tray with a teapot and plate of raspberry jelly smeared crumpets, "Good. You are here. Do you have the note Captain Uriana spoke about?" Grobaras delicately holds a small porcelain tea cup.

Devora hands the Lord Mayor the note. Grobaras takes a moment to read the note. He becomes visibly shaken, dropping the tea cup. It shatters on a courtyard paving stone. "What is this all about? I don't understand. I don't know this thing. Why would it desire to kill me?"

The Lord Mayor begins to pace back and forth, "Valanni, did you do something to piss off this creature?" The Lord Mayor turns and addresses the middle aged aristocrat, that you will later learn is Valanni Krinst, the Lord Mayor's personal Secretary.

"No my Lord. I know nothing about this," Krinst becomes wide eyed and takes a couple of steps back when the Lord Mayor turns on him.

"Somebody please explain this to me!" The Lord Mayor yells out. And then, just as quickly, lowers his tone and calmly with authority looks at the serving girl, "You. Get me another cup. And clean this mess up."

Trembling, and without saying a word, the serving girl moves quickly to obey the Lord Mayor's commands.

The estate is much larger than the map's representation. Sometimes you just have to make do.
