Background:
Quickly Manchakti, we must go now, Hachuku Haku’s whispered voice carried far in the darkness. Manchakti, his wife, pulled her eyes away from the burning house in the distance. She stared for a moment at Hachuku, the fire continuing to burn in her watery eyes. She nodded and reached down, picking up the young boy standing with them. They ran, their black feathers soon blending in with the moonless night, starting their long journey from Kwanlai.
**** Lentuki stood, her eyes closed, feeling the breeze reaching through the trees. She listened to the sounds of nature around her. She felt her thoughts slowly narrowing, becoming centered. Lentuki paused. At the mind narrowed to a thin blade, she could feel everything. Time ceased to have meaning and everything hung, suspended for a moment that lasted for eternity. Lentuki’s eyes snapped open and her body began to flow. She danced in a circle, reaching in and out, blocking and dodging. But most of all she continued to flow. She wound through the circle, changed its orientation, moved again and again and again, always flowing in and out. Strike and retreat. It seemed to last only a few moments, but the sun had nearly doubled its distance from the horizon when Lentuki stopped. Her feathers were matted to her body, sticking with each drop of sweat. She brought herself in, hands together, and refocused herself before relaxing her body. No matter how many times I watch you do that, I’m still slightly amazed every time I see it. Lentuki jumped, turning towards the sound of the voice. When she regained control of herself she smiled, Shalelu. I should’ve known it was you. No one else sneaks up on me out here. Of course Lentuki knew that Shalelu didn’t actually sneak, she just had a habit of moving silently. Lentuki skook her head and sat on a nearby log. She motioned for Shalelu to sit as well, but of course she just shook her head. It’s nice to see you after so long. . . . Lentuki trailed off, leaving the question unspoken. She knew better than to actually ask where Shalelu had been. If she wanted Lentuki to know she would tell, if not . . . well, then no amount of questioning would bring it out. Shalelu smiled knowingly, Have you found anything? Lentuki’s smile faltered, and she shook her head. She touched the small jade amulet she wore—given to her just before they disappeared nearly two years ago. There had been a very little amount of information from the beginning. The home had been pristine—even cleaner than it had been in any of Lentuki’s growing years—and nothing had been missing. Nobody had seen them leave and there was no trace of them. Shalelu walked over, putting a hand on Lentuki’s shoulder. **** Lentuki wandered through the forest. She had spent some time with her old friend. There hadn’t been much talking—there never was with Shalelu—but there had been the things that really matter, comfort and friendship. But now Lentuki needed some time with her other friend, the forest. She wandered through the paths and trails of the forest, some of which she knew well, for she had been coming here for a long time. Lentuki had a rough time growing up in Sandpoint. Hers was the only Tengu family around. She and her brother, Herachi, were often bullied, but she always took it harder. She could not stand to live there longer—always hearing stories from Herachi about their home in Tian Xia—so she decided to run away. Luckily for her, she ran to the forest. While wandering the forest her first time, Lentuki found that things started to make sense. She found a strength in her that hadn’t been there before. She found she was able to go back home before the day was done. But Lentuki continued to visit the forest often. That was where she had first met Shalelu. Between Shalelu, treating Lentuki like a younger sister, and the forest, Lentuki found that she enjoyed Sandpoint. But most of all, she enjoyed the forest. Lentuki still carried the desire to see her ancestral lands, but buried deep beneath the forest’s enchantment over her. As Lentuki walked, not really paying attention to her surroundings. It wasn’t until she began skirting around ash hill—she still avoided the place she had accidently burned when learning to set a camp fire, even though new trees have begun reaching up to the sky—that she realized where she was going. When she reached the clearing she stopped, breathing in deep. Memories of training here with her father came rushing back. She thought of the first time she dragged him here after discovering it. If she was going to have to learn the family fighting style and weapons, she may as well do it where she loved to be. Her father had finally—after much pleading from his little girl—agreed. Lentuki sat and thought, thinking about her parents, long into the night. **** When Lentuki finally returned to town, she went straight to the Rusty Dragon, and jumped right in helping Jherrine, the cook. Jherrine didn’t say anything—she didn’t need to—she simply smiled and nodded. Lentuki had been helping to cook ever since she first came to the Rusty Dragon with Shalelu. Now, she helped out even when Shalelu wasn’t around, though Lentuki suspected she might be tonight. It was long past dark outside when Lentuki finally left the kitchen. She went straight home, lay down and drifted off to sleep. Personality:
Lentuki is a strong willed, stoic individual. She goes through much of her days without words, though when she does speak, her words can sometimes carry great weight. Though Lentuki knows how to fight well, she rarely does, trying to save it for the last resort. She believes strongly in personal discipline, and ensures she spends time each day exercising her body mind and faith. She is an honest person, and refuses to lie—even when it’s gotten her in trouble in the past. And believes friend and family connections are an integral part of who we are, and so is completely loyal to those she names friends. She is also strongly committed to the natural order of things. Death and destruction are a part of life, but balanced equally with life and creation. If killing—of any creature—must be done, it must be done within this in mind. NPC Gallerey:
Shalelu During her many wanderings through the forest, Lentuki ran into Shalelu several times. Eventually Shalelu seemed to adopt Lentuki as a little sister. Shalelu taught Lentuki about the forest and how to live in it, and helped with all sorts of problems growing up. They often spent nights out in the forest together, or in at the Rusty Dragon.
Herachi Lawful Good Tengu: This is Lentuki’s older brother. He was born in Tian Xia and remembers it—if only vaguely. He continues to live in Sandpoint, working as a blacksmith. Manchakti and Hachuki Nuetral Good and Chaotic Good Tengus: Lentuki’s mother and father (respectively). They fled Kwanlai just ahead of the Dragon’s Breath—a criminal organization around that area. They had angered the Dragon’s Breath by managing to get ahold of an item of great value. Manchakti and Hachuki disappeared two years ago. They left a small jade necklace for Lentuki before disappearing. Hachuki is the one who taught Lentuki her martial arts. Jherrine True Neutral Human: The cook at the Rusty Dragon. Lentuki spends many of her free nights helping Jherrine out. She first met Jherrine when going to the Rusty Dragon with Shalelu. Soon Lentuki became fascinated with cooking, and started helping here and there. Eventually coming to be an important assistant when she could.
