Backstory:
Kyras' story begins long before his birth, when a strapping young Varisian ranger, Zandu met a lovely nymph whilst defending her area from boggarts. The nymph and the human gradually fell in love (and out, a few years later), and the lovely fey bore a girl-child. Oddly enough, this child was more human than fey, she was given to Zandu, who named her Relisys and took her to settle in Sandpoint with him. Zandu died at a young age, taken by goblins, but Relisys was adopted by the Church of Desna, and became a devoted herbalist in Sandpoint. For her half-fey heritage, Relisys was courted by many men once she blossomed, but only one caught her eye in return. An elven man by the name of Ithelien Windwander, a ranger and an adventurer, wandered into her herb shop one day, nearly thirty years ago. Something in him called to her fey nature, and that fey part of her called to his own ranger's spirit. After a month of courting, the two were married, and incredibly happy.
Then, nearly 25 years ago, their first and only child was born, Kyras, just after Ithelien had left on one of his periodic journeys to distant Kyonin. He never returned, though Relisys never gave up on his eventual return. As a child, Kyras was incredibly friendly and open, easily setting people's prejudices at ease. He befriended other children, including an older Ameiko and a few others. I'm not sure of their respective ages, but it seems reasonable. If they're older than him by that much, we can change it. However, as he grew older, he noticed his friends (entirely humans), were less and less interested in playing games - like he himself still was. This frustrated Kyras, and made him increasingly impatient with their boring ways. He gradually let them drift away, becoming more focused on following in his mother's footsteps as an herbalist and healer. This was where he first met Father Zantus and learned more of Desna and her ways. While Kyras had always been peripherally aware of the goddess, it was in his seventeenth year that he began to take her seriously. After all, he had no friends to hold him from the freedom she preached, right? It was when he was twenty or so that Kyras first displayed his magical talents, accidentally hypnotizing one of the local guards who had been horrifically burned by a goblin raid to overcome his fear of fire. This astounded Father Zantus and frightened Relisys a little. Nevertheless, when the priest of Desna told her of the potential for healing the minds of those who were wounded in battle or in accidents, she became less cautious and willingly accepted that her mother's gifts had granted her son something different than she had received. Now, five years later, Kyras is starting to wonder what the nomadic life of his grandfather is like. He continues his duties as an apprentice healer and herbalist, but with some reluctance. His mind wanders and he hopes for greater things, sure that the fey magic in his blood will drive him away from Sandpoint at some time, but at the same time fearing that very inevitability.
Personality:
Kyras delights in his magic, his charm, and his family's joy. He is a very devoted son, as his mother is the only family he has ever had in the world. A mischievous young man, Kyras enjoys pranking people (particularly those he considers humorless), so as to spread laughter. However, when he is on duty, he grows very serious, and very sincere. Without any divine magic to heal his patients, Kyras attempts to keep them cheerful and use natural healing methods to aid them. Charmingly (to those attracted to him) or annoyingly (to those whose potential mates find him attractive), Kyras knows what sort of effect he has on others, and has a mischievous sense of humor to go with it.
Almost all of it is a mask. Kyras is a lonely young man who is desperate for people who accept his... oddities without being entranced by his beauty or annoyed by his rapid mood changes, something he has tried to keep hidden - to little avail. Never terribly good at building actual relationships, the half-elf is quietly despairing of ever finding someone whom he can call friend, though Father Zantus comes about as close as he can recall. At his heart, Kyras is a mixture of many things. He has the swift mood swings of a fey, going from laughing to angry with astonishing rapidity, which is only slightly relieved by the human part of him. He is a half-elf, so his patience extends for much longer than one would expect a fey or a human to wait, but at the same time, he sometimes rushes into situations blindly, a human trait. His mixed blood is his blessing and his curse, and he has aspects of all of his bloodline's various races, but none of his own. This is truly the root of his isolation - he does not feel he has a defined self, and so has trouble making meaningful connections with other people. Currently, he is wondering what life in a Varisian caravan is like, and would love to learn more about his homeland.
Appearance:
Usually, Kyras dresses in plain, serviceable clothing that often has hints of red to it, to help energize his patients. When not on duty, though, he wears more fanciful clothing - a red sash, a pair of trousers edged in orange, and a hint of blue around the collar of his tunic. He has no familial scarf, though, as only a forth of his lineage is known to his mother. |
