Death should pave the way for new life. This was how it was with Kyras, born bloodied and screaming, his human mother dying while cradling him in her arms. His father is entirely unknown, the name of the pregnant woman who had traveled into Nybor one night yet another mystery, though the half-breed she birthed alluded to her reasons for coming here.
Found in his dead mother's arms in the barn she had slipped into during the night, most of the community felt ill at ease at taking care of a newborn born under such unfortunate circumstances. He found a home in the care of two trueborn half-elven husband and wife, the former the gravedigger and keeper of the local graveyard, the latter a midwife. Due in part to their occupations, the worship of Pharasma came easy to them - goddess of life, death and prophecy, they brought up their adopted son to respect her ways, even if he didn't understand it completely as a child. Educated to read and write from the family's holy text of 'The Bones Land in a Spiral', Kyras often spent more of his time reading and rereading that book than exploring Ember Lake's coast or playing with friends. Not very athletic and slightly clumsy, he was not much of a help with his father's work, tending towards helping his mother in her duties instead. When he came of age, his adopted parents informed him of his origins, and the birth mother he never knew, taking her to her grave, with a simple wooden marker with no name. Afterwards, he spent a good deal of time by that grave, thinking and contemplating, wondering more and more about why he had lived, his purpose for being in this world. He found solace in Pharasma, her holding of judgment of all living things until their death. Older, he made his choice to serve the Lady of Graves, setting off to Magnimar in order to learn from her temple. He stayed there, hoping to show the goddess his faith despite the lack of other worshipers. At the very least, they never wanted for donations for their funeral services. Kyras always felt there was more that he could do for his lady's service, some way that he could gain her favor. While under the temple's roof, he spent time studying the other gods and goddesses, visiting the other temples and politely asking questions, learning what he could. Spending time learning about other faiths helped to strengthen his own in Pharasma. Recently, he heard of the new cathedral completed in Sandpoint, setting off on a pilgrimage to take a look at it. Before he left, he received a letter from his parents, telling him of things since he left, including one piece of disturbing news: Recently, the graves had been dug up and the bodies removed, including the one that once held his birth mother. With this weighing heavily on his mind, he planned on traveling back to Nybor to investigate - just after the Sandpoint festival and the consecration of the new temple to the gods. Appearance:
A pale and slender half-elf with no facial hair and thick blonde hair cut short, blue eyes and a very subtle smile. He wears scale mail over black traveler's attire, and Pharasma's spiral is shown clearly on the holy symbol dangling from his belt. 5'10", 150lbs. Style:
Kyras is very polite and courteous to most people and creatures, even enemies, never raising his voice or getting angry - the only thing that makes him mad is the undead and those who would raise or control them. Against undead creatures, he'll fight with the strength of a man possessed, and won't settle for anything less than the complete destruction of the offending walking corpse, even if he is hopelessly outmatched - though with counsel, he'll temper himself to adhere to any decent strategy that's advised should they have forewarning of undead enemies. |
