The Kanatou family had followed the Kaijitsu family to Sandpoint, one of a few Tian-Min families which resided in Varisia. Jonosuke had descended from that line; but where the Kaijitsu family was wealthy and powerful, his family had taken to an impoverished life of fishing in the waters of the Lost Coast. Still, Jonosuke was a happy man. In the early morning, he would set out on the sea with his nets. In the evening, he would return home to his wonderful bride, Mariko, who prepared the fish for market. A loving and faithful couple, Jonosuke and Mariko Kanatou were almost perfectly content.
Only one thing ever truly caused sadness for Jonosuke and Mariko. For years, they had tried to have a baby. A little boy or girl to truly complete their family, and to carry on the Kanatou name and traditions. Sadly, no child ever came of their efforts. Still, Jonosuke and Mariko loved each other greatly, and the clung to hope even as the years passed them by.
Then, one day, a miracle delivered the lonely couple's wish. While Jonosuke was out on the water, he spotted a small dingy floating aimlessly, uncrewed and alone. Even from afar, he could see that its hull had been singed and burned toward the stern, as if someone had dropped an oil-lantern. Curious, the old fisherman rowed out toward the abandoned boat to find what he could about its origins. But as he drew closer, Jonosuke began to notice an odd, high-pitched noise coming from the vessel. The splash and pull of the water muffled and distorted the sound, but it was not long until understanding dawned on the man. There was a crying baby in that boat.
Rowing with all his strength, Jonosuke reached the little dingy and drew it alongside his own fishing boat. As sure as day, he found a small Tian boy, wrapped in scarlet silk and lying on an ivory white pillow. No one else was with the child, and the only other thing that Jonosuke found was a leather-bound journal, its water-logged pages half rotted with mold. Jonosuke tried to make what he could of its contents, but the damaged pages were too far gone to garner any clear message. Jonosuke saw a smattering of words he could recognize-- "warned" and "pirates" and "goblins" and "fire." He surmised that the child's ship had been attacked-- perhaps even destroyed-- and that the poor boy's parents must have set him off to sea rather than allow him to share their fate.
Jonosuke brought the boy home to Mariko, and the couple raised him as if he had been their own son. A bright, hard-working man, Kyouraku Kanatou has taken up the family trade. He spends his free time at The Curious Goblin Bookstore, poring over its many volumes, soaking up whatever knowledge he can gain. Some part of him is searching those books for clues to his past, while another part finds him pining for adventure. There is a great, big world out there, beyond Sandpoint, and Kyouraku wants to know it.
