Kuni Daigo nods at the man, looking somewhat grim. "Good. Allow me a moment to check the quarters for signs of infiltration or other unpleasant dangers. I assume that you have not yet had a witch hunter ensure that nothing unfortunate was picked up or included in your masters' belongings without your knowledge." I'm assuming that is being forward and pushy, but not actually super alarming or out of line for a witch hunter. Let me know if that's inaccurate.
I'll take 2 raises. Investigation (Interrogation) TN 10: 10d10 ⇒ (5, 8, 4, 5, 6, 9, 2, 10, 2, 3) = 54 Explosion: 1d10 ⇒ 8 Total: 18+9+8+6 = 41 success "That will perhaps come. But suspicion is always present. And I certainly worry more about the samurai that you serve. Witch Hunters find answers in all places and the words of servants have averted more than one disaster in my experience."
Kuni Daigo seems stoic as he stares at the older man. "It is the purpose of the Crab Clan and of the Kuni Witch-Hunters specifically to be vigilant for the taint at all times. Tell me of your trip here. Tell me of the encounters of your masters. I wish to know of anything unexplained or anything you might have seen as odd. These are not the lands in which one turns a blind eye."

I'm good with going with the GM's flow. If we do it simultaneously, I'm cool with that, but I don't mind waiting either.
If it would help you out to have Kuni Daigo go to one of the two events, I'm certainly fine with that. I was just trying to come up with a way to spend the time while most guest were occupied to put Investigation to use. Really even if it is just a general overview of what servants think or an attempt to search around rooms (or whatever the L5R equivalent of looking through trash is) I'm cool with that. Not expecting much "on screen" time.
I'm assuming that Isawa Mutsuye traveled with a group? I'm looking for a place that physical investigation might help or at least a place with servants that no one will care if I use interrogation against. Kuni Daigo bows slightly. "Will such things occupy most of the guests? I may simply take my leave and deal with investigations in the manner I am accustomed to. I am no dancer and not much of an archer regardless."
Int/Courtier (4k4) (Unskilled): 4d10 ⇒ (8, 5, 1, 7) = 21 Success
Kuni Daigo listens patiently as the large man speaks, doing his best not to disturb the meeting a second time. Once the group is lead out and meets with Kaiu Takakana, he listens again, speaking when the man asks for questions. "It also sounds as though we were specifically requested. May I ask what difficulties you have foreseen that would merit the services of so many bushi and a monk? As Nagasawa-san noted, there are those among us not...refined...in courtly matters and I want to ensure that I focus my efforts where they will be most beneficial."
Kuni Daigo seems a bit uncomfortable about surrendering his weapons, but does so anyway. For any paying attention, the fact that he is a wanderer and not used to such formal ceremonies or having audiences with such important people is rather apparent. Willpower/Tea Ceremony (Unskilled) - 3k3: 3d10 ⇒ (1, 5, 7) = 13 Total: 13 (failure)
Kuni nods, bowing to the others as they approach. "Kuni-san, I do hope that such knowledge will not be necessary attending this Winter Court. I must say, however, that I am somewhat surprised that I was called to attend. I have not spent much of my adult life in our own lands and to be called to a court is something of an oddity. As I am sure you both know, the Taint is an insidious foe and requires much attention to be kept in check." When he hears Isawa Katsuko ask, he lets the others answer first, but tries to add his knowledge as well. I'm assuming Lore: Shadowlands? It seems a bit of an odd topic for a formal court, but cest la vie. Lore (Shadowlands) (7k4) 1 Raise: 7d10 ⇒ (8, 3, 10, 4, 2, 5, 7) = 39 Explosion: 1d10 ⇒ 2 Result: 32
Kuni Daigo walks over to the Kuni shugenja and waits nearby, careful not to interrupt the conversation, but close enough to make it clear that he wishes to speak. Assuming that one of the speakers turns to him, he'll introduce himself with a bow. "Kuni Daigo. I must admit that I am unused to these gatherings but I assume that the two of you share common experience with me." He'll go about talking to them and hopefully, if they were talking about something Shadowlands-related, get an idea if there is a reason to be unusually concerned of taint or tainted individuals being at the Winter Court.
I'm in agreement that replacing early is the best option. Before other applicants have their interest die down. Either PMing players that you though submitted strong characters or, alternatively, starting another recruitment thread just for a courtier (to let interested parties step in on their own) would work. But the night is still young and Ayumi may come through.
Doesn't matter to me regarding the wife and child. I hadn't specifically planned on them attending, but have no problem with them being there either. Whatever makes things easier/more interesting for you as the GM. Kuni Daigo walks without his armor, wearing a comfortable kimono and has left his sugegasa off out of respect for the occasion. He is, however, in full face paint as he wanders the outskirts of the gathering. He tries to observe the other attendees as best he can, attempting to make a mental note of those that spend too much time either hovering around the centers of attention or trying their best to hide from the same. Hearing that, as a traveler, he is likely to be paired with another member of the Crab clan as a guide or yojimbo, Kuni Daigo begins to shift through the crowd seeking his assigned attendant.
Glory/Status are fine with me. As for reasons, I don't think that a Draw Lot Play is really a "connection". It doesn't really imply that we actually give a crap about each other and if the purpose is to just say "we all know each other's names" we can just easily say someone happens to introduce us to each other. I'm kind of assuming that the goal is to get a closer connection that that and I think we've done that for some of the PCs. Not sure that we all need to be connected though, just enough cross connections that we have incentive to work together and not just dip out at the first sign of trouble.
Kuni Daigo's status should, I think, be higher than his glory. Witch-hunters are described as respected and consulted throughout the Empire and he is a second generation witch-hunter. With that said, I think his glory should be low. He is humble and the specifics of most of his deeds are likely untold given their very nature.
I'm pretty flexible regarding ties. My character, by nature of his profession, has traveled most of his adult life so if people want to have met during travels, that's fine with me. I know Kuni Daigo is also one of only two actual Crabs, so perhaps the Crabs we have were assigned to either escort or "check" the guests to the Winter Court. Heck, could even just be knowing the same NPC that is at the Winter Court that introduces us all.
First off, hi all, happy to be here. As for reasons, is there a particular reason that this Winter Court is special? If not I'm definitely content to say that Daigo is in the area visiting family and just happens to be close enough to get assigned (or feel obligated) to witch-hunter duty. As noted, this many outsiders is a big deal and one can only assume that there would be some witch-hunters keeping an eye on things. As for stories, I think Kuni Daigo would be the wrong guy :P He'd tersely inform anyone asking about the Shadowlands that the Crab bushi serving on the wall are the true experts. He is a little bit antisocial after all. And tries to be modest.
As an aside, so you know where I'm going mechanically - I'll take Pummeling Style at 2 (the earliest possible) and then Pummeling Charge later. I didn't take an archetype so I could easily swap in tripping, grappling, and sunder as needed, but if you feel that manuevers wouldn't be useful in the game, I can just take Mutagenic Mauler and do some more damage.
I'd like to submit Shan Lei, human brawler. He is a pioneer that worships General Susumu and has long sought glory as a personal bodyguard to nobility. All of the information (background, goals, stats, etc.) are in the alias. I figure Warden is the best fit for kingdom role, but all three suggestions are in the alias. Let me know if there's anything missing and thanks for consideration. This game looks like a lot of fun. |
