Background:

“Winter is cold beneath the Tusk Mountains, where the Tribe of the Murdered Child camped,” the woman said. Tall and lean, every hint of softness seems to have been cut away from her, and she has the scars to prove it. Most notable are the spiral cut into her right shoulder, and the open eye carved on her forehead. These are no battle scars, but raised, white marks that stand out against her dark olive skin.
“We value skill in battle and the strength to endure above all things,” she says, as if she knew where your eyes were drawn. “My mother was a warrior of the tribes and my father was her enemy, a human from the west. That is all I know of him. Such things happen in war. I am small and weak, for an orc. I would have died, but when I was very young, I was given to the tribe's Witch Doctor. He taught me that there are other forms of strength besides muscle.
“He taught me to draw strength from pain, and make magic. While I learned his hard lessons, I saw others learning as well. Many orcs die as we learn to become strong. That is the way of the world, but many orcs die senselessly, in senseless brawls over petty offenses. The tribes teach that this makes us strong, but it is our greatest weakness. The orcs will never be great in the world until this stops.
“When I spoke of this to my brother, he grew angry. He came at me with his axe, to silence me. I stopped him, but I did not kill him. When he woke, he was ashamed, and his fury doubled. 'A true orc would kill his enemy,' he said. 'You are only half an orc, and you would make us all as weak as the pinkskins.'
“He told others of this, and soon I could not walk among the tents without one orc or another trying to kill me. I left the Murdered Child and walked west, towards the land of my father's people. I came close to starving before I found a mercenary company that was able to make use of my skills. I served with them until they were hired to patrol the border of Belkzen, near the tents of the Murdered Child. I would not go to war with my own, so I came to Magnimar instead.”
