Kelgan was originally a bouncer in a tavern in the fine city of Marsember. Now, it wasn't a great job, but it's the best that someone of his heritage could probably hope for. He generally just sat there next to the door with a cup of ale, his blade at his side. One night, a few of the customers insulted him. (Made disparaging remarks about compensation, insulting his mother, you get the drill) Well, Kelgan was getting a bit sick of all these high-and-mighty humans insulting him, and besides, it's been a while since he had a decent fight. Thus, a bar room brawl was started.
Come the next morning, Kelgan was shocked to find out that he beat the tar out of several off-duty members of the watch, and if he didn't get out of the city soon, he'd be arrested by a vengeful watch. While he was fleeing the city, he met two others: an elven cleric who called himself Kel and a priest of Kelemvor by the name of Geoff. They became friends, wandering the countryside and doing whatever jobs came their way. However, a disaster struck recently. They came across another traveler and stopped to chat when bandits attacked. While the bandits were driven off, Geoff was slain. His final request was to be buried at a temple of Kelemvor. Since they heard about a monastery nearby, they set off to give their friend a final burial.
