I set this scene as an opportunity for some characters to show that they may not have principles but they have STANDARDS.

When I've GMed evil campaigns in RL I've seen that players enjoy the thought process of "I may be a bastard that murders his enemies in their sleep and enslaves their families, but there's depths even I wouldn't sink to. At least if there's no benefit to it"

And being evil means being selfish. Helping someone because it can benefit you later isn't a good action in my opinion.

Have you always wanted to play Kingmaker but are too evil to do it?
Are you the kind of player who when confronted by a bunch of bandits bribes them to kill their boss and work for you?
Do you think evil overlords minions get the most stylish clothes and that a castle surrounded by a lava moat and defended by skeletons is just your dream home?

Look no further, this is the Recruitment Thread for you!

Evil_DM_Keddah Presents:

KINGMAKER: The not actually Grimdark Version

For too long Brevoy has financed adventurers to come to the River Kingdoms to bring civilization and order, well, NO MORE!
A mysterious benefactor has recruited a party of adventurers to create a buffer kingdom to stop their meddling.
But first, they have to get rid of that Stag Lord and his incompetent bandits...

A game of high stakes, heavy roleplaying and low rolls (because I'm a jinx, sorry)

I'm looking for Evil or Neutral characters, no psycopaths unable to work as a team, please, the game may allow PbP but only if perfectly justified and agreed by everyone involved.
This will be a mature game where the bad guys have to be even badder than you, and the good guys are your enemies too!

Are you still interested? Well let me disclose a couple things.

First, a confession: I already tried this approach once, several years ago, but real life got in the way. My circumstances have changed (I don't ride on a bike anymore) so the same thing won't happen again!
Second, a learning: If one player keeps the evil turned up to eleven everytime he interacts with the rest of the party he makes the game unenjoyable for the rest, so please, try to avoid such a behaviour.

Are you STILL interested?

Okay, let's get to the rules.

Character Rules

• Starting Level 1
• Point Buy 20
• Core Races Allowed, featured and uncommon on a case by case basis.
• All Paizo Classes Allowed
• Feats from Core sources are allowed, other sources on a case by case basis.
• Maximum starting HP and Wealth.
• Two traits per character (no drawbacks).
• Background Skills allowed.

Concept and Background

• I need a synopsis of the character personality to see how they'd fit in the campaign.
• No need for a loooooong background as long as you have an explanation of how you came to the River Kingdoms.
• Character must be willing to work as a team, sometimes they may go solo but I don't want lone wolf characters, please.
• Once the party is completed we'll work on the discussion thread how you came to know each other

Players

• Knowledge of the setting will be welcomed but is not a must-have requirement.
• Posting once a day during weekdays is expected, I understand weekends are more difficult (they are for me at least).
• If a player doesn't post for 24 hours after his turn came during combat I will take control of the character until he is able to do so.
• If a player doesn't post for a whole week without warning his character will become an NPC.
• Players are expected to push the game forward, taking the initiative and leading the way. If you want your character...

I expect your evil submissions eagerly.

MWAHAHAHA! sorry.

The mercenary laughs at Wonky suggestion but grabs her easily by her legs and dunks her into the keg three consecutive times. She then sets her on the floor and whispers something in her ear as the poor gnome is caught in a fit of coughs.

Wonky:
You're a nice girl buddy, if you ever need help go to a tavern get a round for everyone and tell the bartender that Gaeth will get the tab

In the future if anyone readies an action he can make the roll in advance so if their action is triggered we don't have to wait for them to post again. I hope everyone agrees

You of course know your limits better than any of us, but two tables of 4-6 players each is a lot of work. I've seen a few & heard more stories of DM burnout, and honestly I'd rather see this game be successful, even if it means I'm not one of the chosen players. The PBP boards have a GM deficit as it is, I'd hate for us to lose anyone.

But it's your decision.

I understand your concern and thank you for it. There's been a big change in my job circumstances (I've switched jobs unexpectedly) and in my new situation I have a lot of free time that I have to spend in front of a computer waiting so I think I'll be able to deal with it and it'll actually make it easier for me to pass my workday.

Thank you again for your concern.

At the beginning it will be quite intense, two or three adventures almost consecutive. Later there'll be some downtime.

The adventuring company isn't a closed concept. Once we had the party we would work together to build it. I would give a framework I need for the first adventures I have planned but there'd be a lot of freedom to build on it.

As a Gamemaster I like to adapt the adventures to the characters not only ruleswise but storywise too, so I'd like players who have enough knowledge of the setting to be a bit proactive (I hate that word but you get my meaning)

Is this a series of modules you're running? Totally homebrew?

Will you be using 3.x rules or Pathfinder(much, much prefer PF).

FR is my absolute favorite D&D setting, and I am well versed in the lore and history of the setting.

It will be mostly homebrew but I may adapt some modules for the game. We will be using Pathfinder but regional feats and prestige classes will be updated if any player wants to use them.

As the party leaves the townhall a heavy rain is falling again. They hurry back to the inn where they're received by a hot bowl of soup and a big smile on Madame Vika's face News fly in this town my friends, come eat and prepare yourselves for tonight she looks down at Wonky You're a terrible waitress and washerwoman but I'm happy you've found your calling my little library mouse

Madame Vika smiles as she listens to Wonky, Ahto and Paval. When Wonky tells her that Sprocket has been calm all night a look of disbelief crosses her face but disappears in a second. With a curtsy she sets the bottle on the table and a glass in front of Ahto she fills half of it with a bright green liquid and prepares the other glass for herself. I've been told you're to thank for saving a life on my doorstep tonight she raises the glass to toast with the Abadarian Where I come from a toast with greenfire is the thing to do

After drinking the glass she leaves the bottle at the table and apologises I'd love to join your conversation but I seem to have lost one of my staff. You can keep the bottle and stay the night for free she moves away from the table and whispers to Wonky Where in the Pit is Topher? That idiot shouldn't leave you alone with so many patrons

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As Wonky serves the drovers a raven haired woman enters the inn, she is dressed in a modest grey dress and has her hair done in a bun. Her looks say matron, but the dueling sword hanging at her side shows there's something more to her. She smiles at the patrons and greets those closer to her as she makes her way to the bar. After looking around for a couple seconds she takes a bottle and a couple glasses and moves toward the table where Ahto and Paval are sitting.

Wonky recognizes her as Madame Vika, the owner of the Lord's Scabbard

Welcome everyone, thank you very much for joining in this adventure.

First I'd like everyone to tell me what they expect from the game (either thorugh here or a private message) so I can try to meet your hopes.

And now, to the meat:

If you don't mind I'd like your posts both on the OOC thread and the IC thread to be made with your Alias to avoid making things confusing.

About the DM rolls:
I do most dice rolls in the open. I just keep for myself those for NPC's bluff checks and for those characters I don't want you to know their stats (main NPCs mostly) I also prefer to do your Sense Motive rolls if you don't mind, you just call for a roll and I make it and tell you if you find something out. I think this helps the mistery and makes for a more enjoyable experience but I'm open to suggestions.

On the IC thread sometimes I'll post things like :

Perception DC 15:

Hah! Made you look.

I do this to speed things up, so you don't have to wait for me to answer after your rolls, I trust you won't have a look if you didn't pass the check, and if you do yo will be able to keep Player Knowledge and Character Knowledge separate.

About the writing IC:

I personally favour present tense, the usual Bold for talk, Italics for thoughts, Bigger for shouting, Smaller for whispering, and spoilers with the language name for things said in a language other than common.
And I hate @anybodys... I don't think "writing says X to Y" is so much effort

Submission time is over. I'll try to go through all the characters during the day and get back to you.

Thanks everyone for the interest.

After a long time away from these forums I'm back and with a vengeance.

I'm interested in GMing a campaign based heavily on Kingmaker, my intention would be to keep it more focused on the mundane difficulties of founding and mantaining a kingdom letting the Fey aspects of the original campaign take a lesser role.

The campaign would start on Restov, and take its first steps there. Once the characters have something of a reputation they will be chosen to take part on the Reclamation of the Stolen Lands.

What I want from the Players:

At least posting once a day, more will be welcomed. I understand real life can get in the way but please try to give warning if possible. I will try to wait for you to post but if you don't may take control of your character. If a player is dissapeared for a whole week with no warning the character will become an NPC.

I want players willing to take the initiative, to explore the sandbox of Kingmaker, make choices, advance the plot and create plot on your own. I feel I'm a much better GM when the players are invested in the campaign and show it and would like to take advantage of that.

What I want from the Characters:

I want characters that feel interesting, no need to be a complete snowflake but having a couple plot points would be most welcome. I will take my decision based on the backstories and personalities of the characters so you can take care of that part before even getting onto the crunch... but if you like the crunch...

Crunch:

No 3rd party material, sorry, I'd like to keep the game confined to things I already know

Races All core and featured
Classes All classes will be accepted. Archetypes will be considered on a case by case basis.
Alignments Good characters are preferred, Neutral characters will be considered, Evil character are a No-No I'm terrible Gming for them.
Feats All Core Books, other sources will be considered on a case by case basis.
Traits Characters should choose two traits. An aditional trait will be given based on the backstory.
Abilities 20 point buy, no ability beyond 18 none below 9 before racial modifiers
Starting gold Standard starting gold.
Other things Although the first few days of the adventure will take place on an urban environment the bulk of the campaign will follow a more similar story to the standard Kingmaker. So don't create a character unable to survive the wilds :)

I hope there will be interest in this game. I intend to pick four adventurers but if there are not enough of too many interesting prospective characters I may change my mind.

If you have any doubts, advice, suggestions or anything I'm more than willing to listen.

I should have said this before since I see you're new to PbP.

About Posts format:

When your character speaks she should do it like this you put this and write her words in the middle

When your character thinks she should do it like this you put this and write her thoughts in the middle

When you want to say something out of character you do it like this using [ooc][/ooc]

When you want to keep something for some eyes only you do it

like this:
like this
[/spoiler.] without tha last dot.

For rolling dice you use [dice][/dice] for example, Katie makes a Heal roll you'd write 1d20+8 in the middle of that.

You can practice in the OOC thread. And don't be afraid to ask anything, either me or the other players will help you as we can

I'm sorry I was away from the computer during the weekend, I think Evenor wasn't ready for such a fight, he had always hunted bandits from the shadows, not fought undead abominations :P If we are to survive via a DM safe trigger I'm alright, if we're to die as a warning for other adventurers of what's to come from these damned Garagos cult, that's alright and I'd be willing to re-roll another character if the Dm is alright with it.

I would love that too, i'm going to invest in magic item creation feats, so having a good artisan in party is a great idea. I would have taken some point in craft myself.

Ooh so you want me to spend the day working at the forge and then, when I'm tired, sweaty and dirty you will come and start waving your sissy fingers around while saying some magic words and make my Masterwork Bow a +3 Flaming Keen Distance Bow? And you think I won't mind? Well... actually that would be darn cool!

If the DM Locke is alright with it I will spend some precious skill points next level on bowmaking and weaponsmthing. *Yay*

Now that I've got the taste of PbP Gamemastering and got addicted to it I have decided to use a select group of volunteers as my guinea pigs for a homebrew campaign based in Forgotten Realms. This will be a test run for a long term campaign I'm writing for my IRL group.

The Setting: The Forgotten Realms:

What can I tell about Forgotten Realms that most of you don't already know?. It's a high magic, high adventure setting inhabited by some of the most recognisable characters of modern fantasy literature, Drizzt Do'Urden, Artemis Entreri, Elminster Aumar, The Bhaalspawn.

The game will begin in the area known as the Sword Coast specifically in the Friendly Arm Inn, a crossroads in between Baldur's Gate, Beregost and Candlekeep.

The timeline will start at 1.372 DR, a few weeks after Bane's return. Consider it placed as of 3.0 Campaign Setting.

The Characters: Rules:

- Starting level: 6
- Races: All core races allowed, Bestiaries I & II races depending on DM consent.
- Classes: All classes from Core, APG and UM allowed. All Paizo archetypes allowed. Other classes upon consideration
- Alignmentes: All alignments allowed, will try to keep a group with compatible alignments.
- Feats: All Core, APG and UM feats allowed. Other Paizo feats upon consideration.
- Abilities: Point buy 20, no ability over 18 or under 9 before racial modifiers.
- Traits: 2 traits, no regional traits.
- Money: Level 4 wealth

The Characters: Background:

Now this is the most restrictive part of the game, characters must be seasoned adventurers who have never been able to hold onto their triumphs, be it because they have always failed, because other people took credit for their feats, or because they just felt uneasy with it.

Backgrounds requisites will be:
Reason for first adventuring.
Reason for keeping adventuring.
At least one enemy, one friend, a one old adeventuring mate (friendly, unfriendly, dead...)
An objective.
Anything else you think of.

The Players:

I expect players interested in a heavy roleplay game, able to post AT LEAST once a day but with a preference for those that will do it more often. I will try to take a look at the candidates previous history but will not exclude players new to PbP.

The GM:

I am a very experienced IRL Player and Gamemaster still getting his footing in PbP but heavily enjoying it. I will try to let the characters bend the story but sometimes will try to redirect it. I am not too experienced with Pathfinder and have been accused by my IRL players of being a Killer DM when creating original encounters... but I am not! Honest!

I will try to post several times everyday but Real Life will always trump gaming, if I can't post for several days I will try to warn you in advance. I hope I can keep with this game since it's a campaign that has been in my mind for a long time.

Ah, English is not my native language so I may make mistakes, feel free to correct me, I won't feel offended and I hope it will help me improve.

I won't be accepting submissions with no background although I will answer if questions about a concept are made before writing the actual background. I'm not fixing a closing date for submissions since I don't know how much interest to expect.

I hope many people are interested!

The sound of the crowd outside barely reachess your ears despite half of Restov's population having come to watch the ins and outs in the ball. The music and the talk of the attendees fills your head. The wine is good, the food is better. The waiters are handsome and the waitresses pretty. It's quite clear that this is as much a party to show support to the quest to tame the Stolen Lands as it's a show for the nobility to enjoy. You've been introduced and been told your names will be called and you'll have to come to the main table to receive your charters from the Major of Restov himself. The woman who told you also insinuated that you may want to decide on a name for your group.

There are several other parties in the ball.

Knowledge (Local) DC 15:
The other parties are the Iron Wraiths, a mercenary company led by Maegar Varn a minor noble, and a third party formed of high ranking military and diplomats

Knowledge (Local) DC 20:
The Iron Wraiths have been assigned to the Glenebon Uplands, west of the area assigned to the party. Maegar Varn's mercenaries have been assigned the Nomen Heights east of the area assigned to the players and known for it's centaur tribe. The las party has been assigned to the Slough, the mos important route south of Brevoy.

Knowledge (Local) DC 25 or Knowledge (Nobility) 15:
Maegar Varn is known for being a no-nonsense kind of leader, not being outsider to violence to reach his goals. He is expected to get the control of his house once his father dies despite not being the eldest brother.
