"No need for apologies," Kayosin says with a wave before continuing. "Hey, everyone take a few steps back. If this thing has some kind of trap, only one of us should have it sprung on us." He waits until the group gets twenty or thirty feet away before muttering "Here goes," and sliding the key into the ancient chest. He lowers his goggles onto his eyes, covers his mouth and nose with his cloak, and leans slightly back before turning the key. Let me know if anything adverse happens. After a few seconds, he tentatively leans forward. A muffled whistle sounds from behind his cloak, "You guys should come see this."
"Agreed. And I think Ameiko should definitely be making the call as it pertains to the chest. I was just suggesting we don't hold knowledge of the chest back from Hemlock, and that we should touch base with him first." Sense Motive DC 9: You get the feeling that Kayosin's desire to include Hemlock in the conversation about the chest may be motivated by something deeper or more personal than a desire to let the sheriff do his job better.

Kayosin looks up from his work, a slight scowl on his face. "Why not? I'll admit that his handling of a few incidents in the past have been dicey if you ask me." It's clear from his emphasis on the word 'incidents' means he's talking about the investigation on his Old Man's murder. "But it seems to me that we're holding an object that created a threat to everyone in the marshes. That seems like something we should bring to his attention. Plus, making it public only helps our case. If he tries to take it or keep it under wraps, we can always just tell the story to Ameiko. The story gets out either way."
On the trek back, Kayosin takes a few moments during one of their breaks in the march to further inspect the chest. Looking for useful details, traps, or dangers inherent in the chest itself.
"Here's my thoughts on getting back to town," he mutters to the group as he works. "Let's have a chat with Hemlock first. Turn in the ears and debrief him on everything we've found." He pauses as he looks really closely around the seams of the box, checking for triggers. "Then we can go find Ameiko." Also, what does Kayosin know about Brinewall? Is that a local place or thing?
"I guess I wouldn't be surprised to find out he or his family had worked for the Kaijitsus... I just don't think they were related. Like.. by blood or anything. At least not that I know. But you're right about the threads." He taps his wakizashi. "There does seem to be a theme emerging all of a sudden."
Braydon Chem wrote: "What did..it mean by 'the insignia of my Lord's enemies'? I don't carry any..markings save my..holy symbol. And what does that letter say?" After what seemed like forever of silence from the dark-scaled sneak, Braydon seems to draw him back out. He gives a half-shake of his head before answering, "I... um... I actually think that has to do with my blade, not a mark we all carry." Kayosin hands the note to Braydon as he continues, "My dad was Minkaian. Well, he wasn't really my dad, but he raised me. I don't think many people really remember this, but a handful of years ago, he was found murdered in Sandpoint." He shrugs, "No one knows why, and the sheriff never seemed all that motivated to dig very deep into it. But this blade," he holds up the wakizashi he fights with, "was found buried in the Old Man's chest." He points to the exotic runes along the blade, "My guess is that the creature in that cave recognized these. But I still have no idea who left it in my Old Man's body." His eyes, calm but carrying a coldness at the mention of his Old Man's murder, follow Shalelu as he talks about the events of his past. Does she react to his story? Kayosin is hoping she'll know something.
If requested, Kayosin will translate the note to the group.
Question about Elemental Bond (Su) wrote: You are connected to one of the elemental planes. Select one elemental plane: air, earth, fire, or water. Whenever you cast a spell with a descriptor matching that plane, add your tier to your caster level for that spell. You gain resistance 10 against an energy type associated with your chosen plane—electricity for air, acid for earth, fire for fire, and cold for water. At 6th tier, this resistance increases to 20. At 9th tier, this resistance increases to 30. Could Kayosin take this power with Shocking Grasp in mind? Technically Shocking Grasp has the Electricity descriptor, but Electricity and Air are always thematically tied together. And the second half of the power specifically says that choosing air gives the Archmage resistance to electricity.
I was pretty much dead-set on Archmage (Wild Surge is just SO good for Magi)... Ninja, you fine if Braydon and I overlap? Because I was considering dipping into Trickster via Dual Path, but I definitely don't have to. Out of curiosity, Braydon, what are you hoping to get out of Archmage? I agree that Heirophant doesn't seem to have much for your character. Trickster seems like it would have some options for you, though.
Kayosin quickly translates, wracking his brain for what it means for his group and Sandpoint. Int check DC 10 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
"But damn me if I know what it's talking about," he grunts as he once again slams his wakizashi into the bones' resistant frame. Then, without missing a beat, he steps back and to the side before uttering a dark word. His gloved left hand stretches out and a sheet of flames washes over the skeleton, just missing Vak. Round 2

Kayosin tries to make his voice as commanding as possible as he shouts out in a similar tongue. Minkaian:
"We are no thieves! Stand down!" Not willing to put his friends in any more danger, though, he once again circles the skeleton, rolling into a flanking position before striking out with his own wakizashi. "Someone block off that hallway! Don't let them put their numbers to use on us!" Round 1

I'm assuming we're looking into L6? Kayosin takes quick stock of the room, then looks back over his shoulder and down the narrow cave behind them. His word are barely a whisper, "I'm assuming that's the chest the goblins took that activated the skeletons." He tries to look beyond the skeleton sitting on the chest, straining against the darkness with his tiefling eyes. Kayosin's darksight extends to 120 feet, can he see the back of the cave behind the skeleton? Down the hall behind it? Are there any more creatures back there?
Kayosin gives an uncomfortable smile at Shalelu, "It got my pants... nothing else." INT check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 After describing the bones to Vak, he responds to Vak's questions. "Yah, the blades looked like mine, and the armor looks like some from the Old Man's books and pictures... I think they're Tian." I think he's referencing the skeletons Kayosin saw while scouting, so if you want a firsthand look, we'll have to go check them out. But I think it's likely that they will animate and attack us... given the goblins' stories. (I'm assuming they didn't animate because Kayosin stayed Stealthy.) Kayosin considers for a moment. "I'd like to get an eye on those skeletons, too. Probably smart to put'em down if they're a threat to Sandpoint... Hemlock would appreciate that, no doubt. But I think we may have an opportunity here. If the skeletons are here to guard something, and they're controlled by an intelligent master, they may be just as much a warning system as they are combatants. Leaving the bones as they are for now may allow us to get a jump on such a master if they live deeper in the caves." He shrugs, "It's a theory, but even if I'm wrong, we can always clear the skeletons out as we make our way back out of the cave... and this way we may be able to maintain our surprise." he looks at the rest of the group for thoughts on his idea. I say we stick to eh side-caves and try to make our way to the back of the cave first... if there's someone controlling all this back there, we may be able to hit them before they know we're coming.
Kayosin circles around Blobby, trying his best to locate what might be the creature's soft spots. Feeling like he's wasting his effort, he nonetheless jams his blade once again into the amorphous thing. "So what is this?" Round 1

The dark-skinned tiefling cocks his head to the side at the slowly-advancing blob. "Interesting." He waits until the thing is just short of getting to him, and then he retreats another twenty feet towards his teammates. Basically, Kayosin is going to try to lure this thing back to the group… using readied actions to move every time the creature steps within 5 feet. That should mean it's always nearly close enough to attack, but can never actually attack Kayosin.
If it doesn't follow, let me know, but I'll probably go get the group at that point, and bring them forward into L4, anyway.
No problem. I just rolled Kayosin up to scout… so any chance i get to do that (without wasting too much of the group's time, anyway).
Kayosin reacts instinctively, slashing out with his blade before diving backwards into the cave. He rolls to his feet in a wary stance, watching to see if the strange creature-thing will follow. Round 1

Well, Kayosin was going to head to L4 only after taking the left fork out of L2 and getting another look into that main cavern on the right side of the map. Are you saying he didn't see anything there?
Vak looks up from where he was inspecting the cavern 'room' for anything of use.
"Works for me," Kayosin grunts as he skulks forward in Vak's suggested direction. He stalks forward, blade in-hand, and (unless he runs into anything interesting/dangerous) takes a left at the fork, stopping when it opens back into the larger cavern. He pauses once again to see what threats lie in the main space, but doesn't leave the side-cave. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23; +1 vs. traps
If he finds something dangerous or interesting, he'll head back to the group, otherwise…

He sneaks forward, stopping once again if he finds a trap, threat, or comes to the opening (into L4). Does kayosin find anything? If not, he'll go ahead and move forward to that little tiny section, but he won't try to squeeze through that until he's gone back and debriefed the group on what he's found so far… let me know what all Kayosin finds, and we'll figure out the next leg of this cave-crawl. :D

How big is the spider in L2? Medium? Large? Does it look like it could easily fit through the corridor back to the entrance of the cave?
Kayosin sneaks back to the group, pulling them all close before whispering. "Skeletons in the water down the main corridor. Given the goblin stories, we should expect them to be threats. More interesting is the big spider in a room on the other side of this little corridor." Based on Ninja DM's response to my questions above, I think we should hit the spider first. Maybe I can sneak in there, sneak attack it, and try to draw it back here to the group.
Once the team is inside, Kayosin lets the curtain of nettles fall back into place… his eyes adjust to the darkness immediately. Keep in mind Fiendish Sight gives Kayosin Darkvision to 120 feet. :D "Let me give this place an initial looksie before anyone creates any light." As quietly as he can, Kayosin draws his blade and skulks off into the darkness, first moving along the main corridor (on the eastern side) until he comes to the water. If at any point, he notices creatures, traps, or threats to the group, he'll stop to investigate. Using the previous (unused) rolls, that's a Perception of 24 (25 vs. Traps) and a Stealth of 26.

Kayosin reflexively pulls his hood forward, but responds warmly enough. "Shalelu… hi. Yah, the hunt is good." He quickly catches her up on the series of events so far, including notes about checking in with the other Sandpoint people in the swamp, then a quick summary of their move on the goblin town. "So not bad in all. Though the goblins are all worked up about these walking bones, so we're going to go look into it. Doesn't seem like something we should leave unchecked in our back yard, ya know?"
I don't have the new rules (only have access to the playtest material). Given what i had been reading, there were things I liked about Trickster and Champion, with a few goodies from Archmage (though only through the Dual Path direction on this one). How close to the release material is the playtest? |
