Backstory:
I’m a bastard. At least, that’s what they used to call me, the other kids on the street, so I guess it’s true. When I was younger, I didn’t know what it meant. Thought that was my name. I grew up on the streets in a land called Irrisen. It’s a long ways from here. Probably you haven’t heard of it. Most ‘round here haven’t. My father was a Jadwiga aristocrat, my mother one of the elf folk. She died when I was very young. I don’t remember much about her, other than she had beautiful golden hair. I didn’t really know my father either. Never took much interest in me. I don’t mind really. From what I gather, he isn’t the ‘nice’ sort. Oh well, it is what it is, ya’ know? No point cryin’ about it. You must be wondrin’ how it is I came to be down ‘ere. That’s a long story and I don’t want ta bother you with details, so I’ll juss touch the important bits… It was a cold winter and I was uh… we’ll call it “foragin’” so I could get some supper. Just as I was climbing out a window I heard someone running my direction, so I ducked down before they could spot me. It was this woman who was running from someone, she was fumbling with something as she ran past. It dropped, rolled towards me. She made to start after it, then swore and turned to flee as a second pair of heavy footsteps came thundering up behind. She didn’t make it far. There was a scuffle and when it was done, she lay dead and staring. The other searched the deader but didn’t seem to find what he was looking for. When he was gone and I could breathe again, I moved to get away. That’s when I saw it – the thing that the corpse had dropped. A small orb. I have small hands, even now, but even then it fit easily on my palm. Looks like glass, but it has never scratched or nuthin. I felt drawn to it. Picked it up, and scuttled away from the grisly scene. Wasn’t none of my business, that. Only I didn’t get away unnoticed. Tongues wag ‘n such. Show a couple shiny metal circles and some'll flap to even sell out their own kin. Tis the way of things, yes? He came for me a couple days later. Would’a had me too, if Merrill hadn’t taken and hid me. Merrill’s a traveling halfling merchant. .. and a sorceress. I don’t think she would’a told me that last part ‘cept a couple weeks into our journey South something happened. I slipped, fell off a narrow bridge into the icy water. She says I was an icicle when they fished me out. I didn’t feel cold though. Queer as it sounds, the orb had somethin’ to do with that. It was in my packs when I fell in, but when they got me out, I had it clenched in my fist. I don’t know how it got there, I just know it was there, shining like a light. It never did that before, and I never been cold since. Funny, I hated the cold when I was on the streets, now I miss it. It’s always hot here, even in winter. The odd things started happenin’ soon after that. Merrill said it was magic, said I was given a gift – though to be honest she didn’t seem happy about it. Downright nervous she was, though she never said why, not really. She started teaching me though. Said I needed to be strong, to control it rather than the other way around. I don’t usually tell people this stuff, but we’ve been friends a while, ya? Anyway, it’s late and I’m getting’ tired. We ended up here in Heldren. Merrill decided it seemed a good place to retire from caravanning and set up a little shop instead. So here we be. I like it, ‘cept for the heat. Even helping out at the inn sometimes isn’t so bad. Merrill has me worried though. She seems uneasy of late. Mutters sometimes, somethin’ about a storm comin. Not sure what she means, and she says she can’t really say. Probably it's nuthing. Anyway, I’d best head home. G’night!
Spells:
Armor of Agathys 1st level Abjuration CASTING TIME: 1 action
A protective magical force surrounds you, manifesting as a spectral frost that covers you and your gear. You gain 5 temporary hit points for the duration. If a creature hits you with a melee attack while you have these hit points, the creature takes 5 cold damage.
Eldritch Blast Evocation Cantrip CASTING TIME: 1 action
A beam of crackling energy streaks toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 force damage. The spell creates more than one beam when you reach higher levels: two beams at 5th level, three at 11th, and four at 17th. You can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones. Make a separate attack roll for each beam. Minor Illusion Illusion Cantrip CASTING TIME: 1 action
You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again. If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, beating drums, any other sound you choose. It continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends. If you create an image of an object-such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest- it must be no larger than a 5 foot cube. The image cannot create sound, light, smell, or any sensory effect. Physical interaction with the illusion reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it. If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature. Sleep [i]1st level enchantment CASTING TIME: 1 action
This spell sends creatures into a magical slumber. Roll 5d8; the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can affect. Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures.) Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by this spell falls unconscious until the spell ends, the sleeper takes damage, or someone uses an action to shake or slap the sleeper awake. Subtract each creature's hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature's hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected. Undead and creatures immune to being charmed aren't affected by the spell. At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, roll an additional 2d8 for each slot level above 1st. |
