About Kaliciel

Appearance

A slender young Chelish woman, Kaliciel's skin is somewhat paler than the norm, although not unusually so. Her shoulder length hair is almost garishly red, and obviously not naturally that color. Here and there a few light brown hairs can be seen. Her black-colored lips seem unusual for a young woman of Sandpoint, and the dark make-up around her eyes seems to have been applied to make her eyes seem more hollow than they truly are. There's an air of a determined attempt to craft a certain image here.

She wears a simple, somewhat conservative black dress, the skirt of which seems to have been recently cut along the side in an attempt to make it look more practical. A heavy belt circles her waist; attatched to the side are a few small bags and one sizable bag meant for holding a couple of books. A shining, barely used sickle hanges from the other side. She's wearing a pair of old and too-soft dark brown travelling boots, the only piece of clothing on her that isn't predominantly black. A somewhat too-large black cloak lies draped over her shoulders with a voluminous, loose hood.

Background

Spoiler:
Born in Sandpoint to Arin and Pontia Vinters, Kallie and her older sister Sarae grew up with a mostly happy family in a modest house on Bent Street. Her father spent a lot of time away from home to work on bringing trade goods from Magnimar back to a few of Sandpoint's businesses. This left her alone with her mother quite often, and during her younger years much of this time she spent telling her daughters tales of their purportedly heroic ancestors, particularly seemingly tall tales of their great-grandfather, a paladin of Sarenrae, and even more outlandish stories of their great-great-grandmother, a priestess of the same goddess.

For a long time, Kallie and her sister were both enamoured of these stories, but over time she became less and less interested in tales that even to a young child seemed too good to be true while Sarae continued to listen intently. Instead, Kallie found herself more and more infatuated with the books her father started bringing home for her after his long trips out of town after she expressed interest in folk tales and legends of a spookier bent. Thinking that she was just showing a typical child's fascination with scary fireside tales, he continued to bring her similar books, which she always recieved with thankful glee. She buried herself in grim and frightening tales of dark fey, vengeful ghosts, and monsters lurking in the night. Now this held her interest! It wasn't the same thing over and over, like what Sarae was content with!

When Kallie was 13, Sarae announced that she was leaving home to train in service to Sarenrae. Kallie was upset, not just because she felt she was losing her sister, but because she felt that her parents, especially her mother, pushed her into it. Misguided resentment grew in her for her mother's stories, and she threw herself more and more into her books. She became more withdrawn, especially amongst children her age. She also turned more in more to the worship of Desna, partly driven by a sense of rebellion against what the thought her parents were trying to herd her into.

Then the Unpleasantness began.

During the Chopper murders, Kallie went back and forth between fearful and painfully curious about the grisly facts that her mother tried to shield her from. During many of those sleepless nights, her books became a comforting refuge. She came to a realization then: The world isn't quite so scary if you yourself are even more frightening. She took comfort in stories of vengeful fey queens and vindictive witches. She imagine herself in those roles and tracking the murderer of Sandpoint through its darkened streets, putting the fear in him. That helped her get to sleep at night.

Then came the fire at the Temple of Desna. Kallie never really knew Father Tobyn or Nualia, but their deaths affected her deeply as had the Chopper murders. Nualia especially, since she had often reminded Kallie of her own idealized view of her now absent sister. Her dreams that got her through the Chopper murders came back again, this time taunting her with the notion that if she had such power such things wouldn't have happened.

Growing up was awkard for her after that. She had difficulty socializing with other children her age and now fully obsessed over the darker folktales and legends of Varisia. When faced with the inevitable typical teenage problems every child has to live through, she became more withdrawn and bitter, totally absorbed in her own issues. Around that time she, rather childishly, began crafting new personas that she adopted and abandoned regularly in an attempt to both recreate herself as something other than the "mundane nobody weakling" she saw herself as and as a way to get attention. It turns out that one can easily call herself the "Black Witch of Sandpoint; it's much more difficult to get anyone to take you seriously afterwards. She indulged herself in more power fantasies, dreaming of one day mastering the dark arts and becoming Her Great and Terrible Majesty, Queen of all Varisia, on good days driven by the "knowledge" that she could protect anything and anyone dear to her with such power and on bad days accompanied by a helping of "and then they'll be sorry".

The early, weak manifestations of magical talent only helped feed her ego. This was all empty bravado of course. The one time she approached a wizard from Magnimar passing through town about leaving her home to become his apprentice, he saw her for the fearful, immature teenager she really was, put a bit of a scare in her, and she ran home crying.

But everyone starts to grow up sooner or later. She eventually found friends willing to put up with her crap long enough to get to know her, and more importantly, willing to call her out on her anti-social behavior. Her sister returning to Sandpoint after being ordained as a priestess of Sarenrae helped as well. After some much needed hard knocks, she began opening up and realized that life actually isn't always pain. She still kept the black clothing, the fascination for the dark and macabre, the eager studies of local legends such as the Sandpoint Devil, and the sometimes morbid sense of humor. Those she still saw as part of her self image. But at least she had started smiling and enjoying life. This was a great relief to her mother, who was grateful that her daughter wasn't actually obsessed with evil of any kind, but rather innocently infatuated with the trappings of the dark tales she had buried herself in. She still held onto some pretentions, and actually still took a bit of pleasure in maintaining her reputation as "that creepy girl", but at least she had friends to call her out on it and take the wind out of her sails when she needed it. Gods knew her mother never hesitated to, which always reduced her daughter to whining protests that "You're embarrassing me."

On her 18th birthday, it became clear to local authorities on such matters that her talents were inborn. Whatever magic she had was in her blood. Her imagination lit on fire, wondering at what mysterious heritage had granted her this gift. Could she carry the blood of the fey, from the dark forests of the world? Or maybe some sort of infernal curse that was surfacing in her bloodline, something that she would have to fight against(naturally) and master?!

She asked her mother about this, eager to find out what the source of this power could be. Her mother rubbed the bridge of her nose, she saw this coming eventually. It may have skipped her generation but it was clear it was surfacing in her daughter. "Don't you remember all the stories I tried to tell you? About your great-grandfather? And his mother? You don't remember the part about his father?"

"Um...no?"

"The shining knight? The one that saved your great-great-grandmother's life? The one with the golden eyes that could only stay with her for a short time, only able to return in time to escort her to Pharasma's court? The one with the angelic aura about him?"

"Oh." Well. That was unexpected. She probably should have been paying attention. "I'm not going to start wearing white, mother."

She hasn't told anyone else what she learned that day. Though it was not what she was expecting, she has taken a certain level of pride and, strangely, comfort in it. She has been becoming a bit more insufferable again though, perhaps in protest. While she's much more well adjusted these days, she still has some old insecurities hanging on, especially a weakness to peer-pressure. As much as she fiercely holds onto her individual self-image and as happy as she is to be at the fringe of the group, she's terrified of being completely outside of it again. The knowledge of the nature of her power and the potential for its growth is also possibly leading to old childish delusions of grandeur returning, just with different clothing.

When goblins recenty attacked Sandpoint during a festival, Kallie saw an opportunity to prove herself. Caught up in the excitement of the moment, she joined in the defense of the town, throwing everything she had at the invaders even as her nerve began to waver. Even though she fought only from the sidelines, she quickly and recklessly exhausted her powers, and hid with others who took shelter during the rest of the invasion. The realization of the actual danger present and the fact that she didn't have much of an effect on the battle hit her hard, and her nerve was completely lost for some time longer. But a few days later, she began hearing stories about a few of those present at that battle who were continuing to look into the troubles turning up in Sandpoint. Damn it, are you just going to hide at home like a scared little girl or are you going to finally prove yourself? she thought.

Forcing a grim smile and determined to prove she wasn't just some silly child still playing pretend, she stepped out to find those people and try to help assist in the defense of her hometown.

Pity she had absolutely no idea where to start.
