Background:

Kaleo was born in Hilo, Hawaii, but due to his parent’s work, his family moved to Portland when he was 8. He had a relatively happy childhood, but was rather shy as a child and didn’t make many friends. He loved to learn and to read, but especially loved detective stories, and dreamed of one day becoming a detective. When he attended college he majored in criminal justice, but it was in a chemistry class that he made a life-changing discovery. After simply touching a caffeine-based chemical compound he had created, one with well-documented effects, it suddenly became volatile and reacted. For a few minutes afterward, he found that his senses and intellect were greatly sharpened. He was able to replicate the result, and eventually came to the conclusion that he could infuse his mana, or spiritual life force in the Hawaiian tradition, into certain specific chemicals to produce effects that could truly be only described as magical. He decided to keep quiet about his discoveries, at least until he could present a more scientific explanation for his findings. He also managed to discover several other mixtures, each of which which produced a variety of effects when ingested. One of them allowed him to read any language, and through it he discovered that one of the books tucked into a corner of the university’s library was not merely written in some foreign language, but instead the languages of entire separate planes of existence. It was through this book that he learned about the larger magical world beyond his powers, but it was also how the magical world learned of him. Soon after Kaleo graduated, only a few months into training as a police officer, a wizard with ties to the Riot Crew tracked down the book, as well as Kaleo. Kaleo then realized what exactly he had gotten himself into. The wizard directed him to join the Crew, as they were interested in his unique abilities. Unsure of what else to do, and seeing an opportunity to at least be some kind of detective, Kaleo did so, though he does not entirely know what to expect.

Hooks:

Kaleo is new to the Riot Crew, and the magical world in general. He is inexperienced, naive, and far more loyal to his family than the Crew.
Kaleo is not the first to discover the practical applications of chemical compounds infused with mana, and hardly the most skilled. Given one can increase their own many by killing their enemies, this has led many such practitioners to become extremely deadly.
Kaleo was not very careful in hiding his earliest experiments, and unbeknownst to him, at least one of his professors put together that he could do things that shouldn’t be possible.
