Backstory:
Joran Gres is the son of Commenorian politician Anasalla Gres, a well-known and popular senator. Born a mere couple of years before the beginning of the Great Galactic War, Joran grew up during the tumultuous time sheltered from the worst of the violence. As his mother was a rising political star on the planet, she was able to arrange for him to have the best possible education and advantages. His mother had visions of a political dynasty, where Joran would follow in her footsteps. His days were filled with regular schooling, as well as rhetoric and debate. He also learned how to manipulate others, and the art of the backroom deal. This was what his mother excelled at, and she went to great lengths to instill in Joran the same abilities. As Joran came of age, his mother was looking at challenging the incumbent Senator, Valtar Trask, for his seat. In what she viewed as a valuable political move, she arranged an appointment for Joran to the Coruscanti Military Academy. Valtar’s son was a well-known anti-war activist, and with the Battle of Alderaan having just recently been concluded as a Republic victory, Anasalla knew that Joran’s being part of the academy would be seen as Republic patriotism and would be an advantage in an election. She was sure with her influence she could arrange to keep him from seeing any actual combat, thus preserving her legacy while ensuring that both she and him would benefit from his service. So Joran began at the Academy. He proved to be bright and agile, with a likeable personality and attitude. He also proved to be a bit of a troublemaker. He would sneak out after curfew to visit various nightclubs, always making sure to disguise himself to avoid attention, or to play practical jokes on other students. He was very observant, and memorized the timings of the guards’ rounds so he could slip past them. Though many of his instructors suspected him of such activities, they could never prove that he was involved. It was at the beginning of his second year that a new instructor, Sergeant Halt Grentlo, took notice of Joran. A former special forces operative, he heard right away about other instructors’ suspicions of Joran’s activities, and was curious. For several weeks, he observed the boy’s routine, and determined how he was able to sneak out with such regularity. After a while, the Sergeant sprung a trap and caught Joran in the midst of sneaking off-campus. Taking him to his office, the Sergeant threatened Joran with all kinds of punishment, ranging from expulsion and court-martial to prison time. Joran began to panic, and once the Sergeant saw Joran’s fear at the right point, he gave him a choice. He could either be expelled, publicly embarrassing both himself and his family, or he could agree to a special training course off-planet. Joran, seeking to avoid embarrassment, chose the latter, and a day later, he was on a shuttle bound for an undisclosed location. Sergeant Grentlo had made arrangements for him to enter the Republic’s Special Intelligence Service training. The ability he demonstrated at the Academy showed a great deal of potential for espionage, and so for the next 4 years, Joran trained at the undisclosed location. His official record said he’d been selected for Advanced Officer Training, and that was the story put about the Academy and that he told his mother, now the Senator from Commenor. At the SIS training center, Joran was learning the art of disguise, information gathering, and how to shed one identity for another. He learned to use his skills to enter secure areas without a trace and steal information. His ambitions slowly changed from following his mother’s political footsteps to focusing on his Intelligence training. As graduation approached, Joran’s mother began exercising her influence to try and get Joran appointed to the Coruscant fleet, which would both keep him close and ensure he would be able to avoid any significant combat. This did not fit with the SIS’s plans, and so a careful cover was crafted, with the assistance of Joran himself. Ensign Joran Gres would be assigned to the Fondor defense fleet, an area that the Empire had thus far avoided. Meanwhile, Operative Joran Gres would be sent out on covert espionage missions to aid the Republic war effort. So went the last years of the war, with Joran given several missions that took him into both Imperial and Hutt Space. He was tasked with acquiring all manner of intelligence, from battle plans to technical specifications to asset retrieval. Over the course of the war, Joran posed as an aide to an Imperial Moff, an Imperial Navy recruit, a merchant, a smuggler, a bounty hunter - a variety of roles and missions, each one successful. Though Joran never knew the end goal for the information he gathered, he knew what he was doing would help end the war. Then came the Sacking of Coruscant. Joran’s mother managed to avoid serious injury, but was still held captive by the Empire until the Treaty of Coruscant was concluded. After the Treaty, Joran was withdrawn from his assignment and placed on counterintelligence duties. He was tasked with locating and removing Imperial spies within Republic space. Now, with his cover promoted to Lieutenant, the story was that he was assisting in the inspections of various defense positions. He was on Chandrila when Jedi Master Dar’Nala bombed the Senate building, and he learned that his mother had been injured in the blast. Though she survived, Joran has harbored some slight resentment towards the Jedi Order since, in particular in regards to the fact that they operate independently of the command structure, which reduces their overall accountability in his eyes. Currently, Joran’s public identity is Lieutenat Joran Gres, assigned to the Fleet Defense Inspection and Requisition Service. His SIS position is Special Operative First Class, and though he’s been doing counterintelligence for the past year, he has just received word of a new assignment on Coruscant...
Appearance & Personality:
Joran Gres is of average height, average weight, and, with a little makeup, average face. His ability to disguise himself and blend into the crowd on any world with a significant human population makes him a vital undercover asset, and one that can be used to great effect for covert missions. Joran typically has a very easygoing personality. There are only two exceptions Due to his training, he can change up his personality based on the role he is playing, and the other is that he’s always slightly cold towards Jedi, on account of the explosion that injured his mother.
3 Questions:
Question 1: Who do you know? Senator Anasalla Gres - Joran’s mother is serving her third term in the Senate. Her previous injuries have made her more iron-willed, and she has been vocal in her belief that the Republic needs an alternative elite defense corps in place of the Jedi, given their inability to control their own ranks. Though Joran loves his mother, he is loath to ask her for aid, for he knows that any favor she does for him, he will have to repay at some point down the line. Fereeso Cuul - Fereeso is a Rodian smuggler whose ship got impounded on a world where Joran was posing as an Imperial military attache, while the Rodian himself was imprisoned. After Joran had successfully stolen the troop data he was tasked with, his exit plan got slagged due to incompetence on the part of the pilot, and Joran was left to improvise. He used his cover to get the Rodian out of prison and the ship out of impound in exchange for transit to Hutt Space, where he connected with an SIS safe house to get transported back to Republic Space. Getting Fereeso’s ship out of impound was one favor, but Fereeso still owes Joran another for getting him out of jail. Fereeso knows Joran as Valin Rath. Question 2: Who knows you? Ex-Moff Titus Scalar - On one of Joran’s missions, his cover was that of a newly hired aide to Moff Titus Scalar, governor of the planet Sernpidal. Moff Scalar was a vain and egotistical man who could not be bothered to do any of the boring work necessary to run the government, leaving that to fall to his aides. Joran was able to manipulate him into giving up the defense codes to Sluis Van, which allowed the SIS team to smuggle a saboteur team into the planet and blow up an under-construction prototype battlecruiser, as well as destroy all the copies of the plans, setting back work years. Imperial Intelligence traced the leak to Moff Scalar’s office, and his aides. Moff Scalar was removed from his position and stripped of his rank. Joran, having already moved on, avoided discovery, but Titus Scalar has determined that Tiberius van Holafstone, Joran’s alias, was responsible, and he is determined to avenge himself of the loss of his position. Scalar has a great deal of wealth at his disposal for posting bounties, but wants to pull the trigger and execute his revenge himself. Question 3: Why are you on this mission? Joran is one of, if not the, best infiltration experts in Republic SIS. He has the skills, training, and experience necessary to infiltrate a facility, retrieve the asset, and escape with it, as well as the necessary intelligence and creativity to come up with a fallback plan if things go sideways. No one else could establish the necessary cover identity to get into the facility where Kaul Wren is being held and retrieve the necessary reconnaissance to form an effective plan. He also worked with Kaul Wren on a couple of missions during the war, which should help convince Kaul that this is a legitimate rescue mission, and not an Imperial trick. After creating the necessary cover identities to get the chosen team on-planet, he is now in his cover identity of Eben van Legarwus, a security officer recently transferred from Ziost. He has a complete layout of the prison complex, and knows exactly which cell Kaul Wren is located in and the quickest route to the extraction point. Thanks to his clearance, he even has the code to unlock the cell and remove Kaul's stun cuffs. A little RP
”You disapprove?” ”If you’re looking to blast your way in, they’re an excellent choice. Doing so might cause a slight political incident with the Sith in light of the Treaty of Coruscant, precipitating a war we cannot win, but they’ll probably succeed,” Joran says, sure this is a test of some kind. ”You see a better way?” ”Infiltration. Instead of fighting our way in, we gather what information we can on Carratos, create cover identities to insert the team onto the planet, and then gather the information we can about the prison - including the location of the asset’s cell - before breaking in using other identities. This may also allow us to hide backdoors and overrides in the security system, making the task of rescuing him easier. We’ll minimize time spent in the prison and extract ourselves and the asset - at which point we’ll rely on a fast ship to blast through the defense fleet and into hyperspace. A pilot of this caliber’s skills shouldn’t be wasted, after all,” Joran says with a smile. ”Do you see any issues with the makeup of the team apart from that?” ”Just one - the Jedi who will be joining it. They need to be capable of either hiding themselves in the Force or passing for a Sith. Otherwise, any actual Sith on the planet could sense them and blow the operation. The Jedi would also need to understand we are rescuing one person - the asset. We cannot free the entire prison, as that will result in failure. They need to understand the objective is the asset - not prolonged duels with Sith Lords. No lightsabers, either, except as a last resort - those practically scream ‘Jedi’,” Joran grimaces as he talks about the Jedi. He’d prefer they not be included at all, but he knew there was no chance the Council wouldn’t insist on including at least one. He just hoped whichever Jedi were included weren’t glory hounds or like those conspirators who had bombed the Senate building. ”Very well, Operative, you may begin your information gathering and creating cover identities. We’ll put the final touches on the team. Dismissed.” Standing, saluting, and leaving the office, Joran immediately began planning. He had a couple of contacts who might be able to tell him the present state of affairs on Carratos, and it should be simple enough to find information about the world’s climate, supply methods, and legal system. Perhaps he could even arrange for a contact in the prison. And, of course, creating identities for the final team that the Sith wouldn’t see through...that was the most challenging task of all. A dangerous smile on his face, Joran set to work planning to break into and remove Kaul Wren from one of the most secure prisons in the galaxy.
