Optimization is good. Every decision you make that doesn't contribute to your character concept or your character's goals is bad roleplaying. If your character has any goals at all, then some decisions serve those goals, and some don't. If you aren't making rational decisions in your own interests, you're not playing a character. You can't "have fun in a shared fantasy world" if you're dead.
