Jangis was sent to the salt mines early to make money for the family. He has had to travel around Ustalav, helping clear abandoned mines of vermin and lending his well-trained back in the arduous task of chipping away at rock for other people's benefits. Over time, he learned plenty about mining, and how to survive underground.
He returned to Karcau just in time to watch Ma and Pa get executed, and has made a promise to help the family escape. His greatest worry is that he has ben away from home so long, that he no longer knows his family. However, he still loves his family immensely, still prays to Pharasma, and still maintains faith that his protection of his family is, above all, the best thing he can do in this world. So, he plans to do his utmost to keep them safe underground, somewhere, somehow.
He managed to grab his family's old war-horn, a long, heavily-scrimshawed animal horn. The Ghawn family history is inscribed along the instrument, and according to family legend, it was present back when the family was a warring, full-orc tribe in the Hold of Belkzen, and that it was carved from a wyvern who was slain by the original ancestral Jangis Ghawn, his namesake.
