If you are one in a million there are still thousands upon thousands just like you in the imperium.
Unfortunately for Atella not a single one of those lived near her. Atellas life was a lonely one, she was always considered a bit odd and she had very few friends. It was lucky that she had a uncanny knack of knowing if she was alone or not, it saved her from lots of bullying and also gave her a purpose on the ship. She was to stand guard in the farthest reaches of the ship and guard the passages to the very dangerous lower levels. Atellas parents, who where both Tech-Priests, had since long given up on her to continue their glorious work of the machine god and they now focused on her younger brother instead as he showed much more potential. Relations between Atella and her family was chilly at best.
It was therefore not much of a surprise that when she fell asleep on her post and the captain of the ship was informed, her family did little to help her and Atella was promptly sold as a slave at the next port. As the buyer lived in a much more densely populated and well traveled area it didn't take the black ships long to identify Atella as a psyker prospect and take her back to Terra.
As she, some 16 years later, left holy Terra she was assigned to a imperial guard regiment as an advisor in the ways of the warp. Her luck still holding true, the majority of the regiment was slaughtered by orc raiders not long afterwards during a particularly dull supply run. During the attack Atella evaded most of the fighting and hid near the docking gates which, to her surprise, where open. She sneaked into the docked ship and was promptly arrested by the inquisitorial soldiers that had come to slaughter the orcs. A few days later she was transferred from the discontinued guard regiment to the care of Inquisitor Kalistrade, which terrified her immensely. She now awaits her first assignment not knowing if it's better to live or die.
