Well, my key interest in this game was as a playtest of the ACG -- I had no problem for purposes of playtesting of following along the rails since the point was to just have some fights and see how everyone performed.

Since the playtest is over and there is therefore no other reason to play along except for the story, I guess I assumed there was more leeway to roleplay.

I do agree the post rate is slow and I'm not sure we've got everyone with us. Perhaps it would be best to stop it where it is.

Again, do not get me wrong--I am very appreciative of your taking the time to set this up and get this running. The playtest itself went too fast and was poorly timed for a lot of people to be able to participate.

I have to say, I am really not cool with the GMPC railroading us into combat.

I will go along for now, but if it's going to be that kind of campaign that's utterly on railroad tracks and the GMPC steers the party in a totally different direction from where the PCs want to go, then I am going to bow out. I truly appreciate Jelani's taking the time to run this, but if that's how it's going to be, then both the campaign is not well suited to my playstyle and I am not well suited to be a player in such a campaign.

Iriel disagrees strongly; clearly the Shoanti was even less versed in the ways of civilization than she was--it would be both idiotic and immoral to come upon a murder scene and say nothing--and all the moreso when they are being attacked. "Guards!" She shouts as loud as she can, their having no time to seek out any other help.

"Let's get out of here, we're either being set up or otherwise this is not our fight."

Iriel regardless draws her bow and nocks an arrow, backing away from the door slightly so the others have room to move, keeping the two men by the corpse within light of sight as best she can as she sidesteps. She is trying to cover Zarbukolet and Chibudem so they have time to maneuver.

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
I am aware I may not have LOS or that the targets may have cover bonuses

Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

"I don't think someone's face can look like that and be alive, miss. But do as you feel you need to." Iriel shrugs at Zarboluket. "Someone who's good with cities and good with talking to strangers should go. I would be a poor candidate."

"Or perhaps there is something wrong..." Iriel trails off lamely. "Perhaps getting the constabulary is a good idea after all. Lest we be caught and presumed to be the culprits."

Iriel crosses her arms. "Unless we see evidence that we should be concerned, there is no reason to bother the guard--and remember, someone is supposedly stirring up trouble in the Society's name. Asking the guards to help us break into a house--when the man may simply be out, or not awake yet--may do little to improve the situation.

"Remember, we were given next to no information on this man--simply that he is a merchant and that he reported that someone was acting poorly in the name of the Pathfinders. He may be away or working.

"Anyway, if he doesn't answer the door, let's not go wild. If we wish to seek him out, he is a merchant--so we might also try to look for him at a merchant's guild or in a marketplace. Or we can just look for other leads--Dreng said these so-called Pathfinders were trying to start a Lodge here, and stirring up trouble in the political scene. That means they'd be making their presence known in administrative places if not the general public--we could simply ask someone reasonably knowledgeable if there's a local Pathfinders' lodge and see how they respond--likely any answer will provide us valuable information."

Ever the scout, Iriel tries to stay alert, also instructing her hawk to do so as well. She tries to take in the strange architecture and surroundings, memorizing their path as best she can--but even among other cities, Kaer Maga seems disorienting, to say the least.

When they arrive, she peers about. "This is a well maintained building, amid relative hovels. I wonder why he would have chosen to live in such a place."

She shrugs. "Still. There's no point in standing out here." If no one else does, Iriel reaches out and knocks on the door.

Iriel pays extra so she can keep Fion with her in her room, rather than have to leave him in an aviary somewhere. If she is permitted to keep him in the dining hall, she asks for raw eel which she gives to the bird to devour, while she decides to try the house specialty for herself.

"Part of travel is to try new things," she says. "I've never been much of a fisher, I admit, so it's nice to have fish prepared by one who knows how to handle them."

She stays quiet in the inn, being a bit out of her element and knowing she is drawing attention with the giant bird, but she keeps her eyes and ears open to other conversations. Perhaps if the Pathfinders' reputation was being spoiled, there would happen to be some talk of it.

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

"The sun is setting, and we are unlikely to make a good impression dusty and exhausted. I suggest we find a place to sleep, and look for Collgardie in the morning. If we stay in an inn or public house, we might be able to ask around for information as well."

Fion swoops down by the collapsed wall and picks up a scrap of the goblin's clothing, before landing on Iriel's shoulder. Iriel leans down to investigate the same area and remarks, "They'd been camping here. I know little of working stone, but they must have been here awhile to be creating weak points in the masonry."

She straightens. "This breach passed your oversight for several days at least, then, so you will have to check carefully to see where they might have gotten in--it's quite possible they had time to set up additional ambushes. In the meantime, let us help you." She moves to help move both bodies and rubble to clear the path as quickly as possible.

As she works, she asks, "Is there any other path to the city beside this one? It seems foolish to have the only road to a place be inescapable should anything go wrong."

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24
Fion Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

It would take two rounds to get the sphere into the pit (with the GM determining whether it strikes any of the creatures within or not). I can do that, if you want to keep it for one more round. After that, the sphere itself would expire. I am also cool with just dismissing the pits now.

Honestly, I feel like we've lost our momentum, as well as our purpose since the playtest has ended. While I am willing to continue on, I also would not be upset if the game closed.

If we do continue on, can I suggest that we handwave killing the last three goblins -- trying to jump back in in the middle of a combat will only ensure everyone getting back into it will be slow.

Busy with holiday stuff the next few days. Please bot as needed.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, and a happy New Year to all!

I was just wondering if we were going to continue this now that the playtest is over. I am happy to keep going if you are able though.

Just leave everything as is for now. Thanks.

Okay: rereading my post, I realized I forgot to add a rather crucial piece of information: she directed the sphere to go behind the pillar. I didn't assume it would automatically hit the shaman, I rolled the reflex save in case it did, since you wanted us to resolve rolls. Since the reflex save succeeded anyway, so even if it did hit it had no effect, I forgot to add the caveat: "if this actually hits the goblin." I was NEVER expecting an auto hit, just hoping I might hit it by chance, and I should have explained that more clearly. Again, I am not going to use this spell again, it is clearly too confusing to interpret. It winks out next round anyway.

Please do not move my character without my consent in the future, unless I am not present to play and need to be botted, as I am now completely confused. To avoid any further complication, please just leave the board where it is and let my current action stand.

I do not think that is an accurate interpretation of the spell given how it is worded (you do NOT select its destination, you select its direction, and all you would need line of effect to is the sphere itself (the object of the spell)--and if it misses a target because it was directed poorly and doesn't run into anything, that is an acceptable outcome of how the spell works), but this is no time to argue rules. I'll just know to prepare another, less confusing spell next time.

One thing: I would like to leave it stand that I directed the sphere to move the prior round, since I burned a move action to do so (and otherwise could have done something else). Just move it straight south to as far as she can see, illuminating the cave in that direction (it provides light as a torch).

Do the goblins in the pit get cover from ranged attacks? I presume because the pit is deep, it would be hard to get line of sight to them without standing over them (and risking falling into the pit). My following actions are based on this presumption.

Round 3
2 Move actions: move to P3
Swift Action: Activate Animal Focus: Falcon (+4 to Perception)

Iriel leaves the flaming sphere where it is for the moment, a burning warning to the shaman, should he decide to run back in that direction.

Iriel moves between the pit and pillars. Tapping into the forces of nature which have served her well before, she heightens her senses and looks for where the shaman is hiding.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 13 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 13 + 4 = 18

Flaming sphere doesn't ask for line of sight, you just have to point in the direction you want it to travel (NOT to the square you want it to stop--the description of the spell says it stops automatically if it enters a square with a creature in it. Otherwise, you give it a direction to move in and it goes in a straight line in that direction up to 30 feet or until it runs into something it can't roll over), so I was interpreting that I did not need LOS. If you are houseruling the spell or at least interpreting it differently than I do, please clarify. Thanks.

Yes, I was not making the Fly check because Fion would succeed regardless, as 1s do not autofail.

Who is still standing and how hurt do they look?

Sorry, I totally did not see that somehow. I've updated sheet.

The main notable changes, beyond updating the Animal Focus ability, as I've switched her teamwork feat to Coordinated Shot (she can switch out her feats anyway).

If I may, I will say that the active Animal Focus ability on the animal companion is the Snake (+2 to AOOs and +2 dodge to AC versus AOOs).

Question: there is now a revised playtest document. Would it be possible/allowable to update our characters to the revised versions?

Iriel wouldn't change much but the durations of animal aspect would increase and she could share the ability with her animal companion.

There are also new teamwork feats she could use.

Iriel directs her hawk to attack again.

She then points behind the pillar, directing the flaming sphere to follow the shaman.

As the other goblins are obscured in the pit and the shaman in cover by the pillar and thus not easy targets with a bow, Iriel steps forward and shoots at the only remaining easy target, the goblin warrior.

Free Action: Handle Animal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Fion bite attack warrior: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 2 = 28
Confirm crit: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 2 = 24
Damage: 1d4 + 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + (3) + 1 + 1 = 8

Fion talon attack warrior: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 = 13
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Oh wait, that didn't hit, I don't know why I thought it did. Must have misread

Fion talon attack warrior: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 = 18

Move Action: Direct sphere

Shaman Reflex save DC 15 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Misc Action: 5 foot step to O8

Standard Action 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Should one of us give Jelani a nudge? I expected another post from him beside the time zone post, and I wonder if he thought he posted and didn't. I know I've done it!

Round 1
"Maeth!" Iriel shouts again, but as Fion the hawk considers clawing at the goblin's face, it is distracted by the sight of the smashed weasel on the floor, which looks tantalizing enough to the bird to make it pause. It does not move, however, so it continues to flank with Chibudem.

With a brief gesture, the flaming sphere rolls about, trying to catch the shaman in its flame, leaving its space and reentering once again.

And just in case that doesn't work, Iriel then draws her bow and nocks an arrow with a fluid motion and shoots at the shaman as well (seeing the rest of the party has the other attackers well covered).

Somehow, the shaman continues to avoid the flames, but his ability to avoid the arrow is less successful.

-------------
Free Action Handle Fion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Free Action: Draw bow

Move Action: Direct flaming sphere

Shaman Reflex Save DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Standard Action: Attack Shaman
Bow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Y'all either stay up very late or are in a very different time zone from me. (I'm EST)

Surprise Round
Iriel shouts "Goblins!" pointing at the ones behind the bulk of the group. Even as she does so, she lifts her arm and addresses her hawk. "Fion, maeth!"

Fion launches off her shoulder, flying over Chibudem and the goblin warrior and then arcing around to flank the warrior with Chibudem. (Square L13. Fion should have enough squares of movement that he can angle around in flight and arrive in the square without provoking an AOO)

Iriel then chants a spell and points at the shaman, ignoring what she assumes is Chibudem's hopes for glory. She is more interested in damaging the shaman before he has time to cast, and the "orc lover" has entangled himself with the warrior, so she knows unless she does not act now, it definitely will get a chance to do so.

A ball of flame appears and begins growing in the space where the goblin shaman stands, growing until the whole area around the shaman is engulfed in flame.

Unfortunately for Iriel, the shaman dances about, somehow managing to avoid the flame all around him--perhaps this is something he has dealt with before. He is still standing in the middle of a fire, and Iriel can only hope that is distracting at best.

-------------------
Free Action Handle Fion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Standard Action: Cast flaming sphere, sphere appears in same square as shaman (P15).

Shaman Reflex Save DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Standing at the edge of the group is a tall, black-haired elven woman made most notable not by her own presence, but that of a large golden hawk sitting upon one of her pauldrons. Unlike pets used in falconry, the hawk is not hooded and while it has jesses on its legs, they are not affixed to anything to hold it in place. Nonetheless it sits still, focusing its attention only on the elf--or any who come near her.

The elf herself wears a fine wool mottled green cloak with a moon-shaped clasp, under which is a well fitted breastplate and matching greaves, which she manages to make little noise in despite its metal bulk. Her hair is kept away from her face with a green circlet, which accentuates the green in her eyes. While all elves are generally seen as exotic and graceful, she may be graceful but she is relatively plain faced besides the striking green of her eyes. Given the presence of the hawk and green garb, along with the bow and quiver she carries, doubtless she could be anything other than some kind of forester or hunter.

She looks about, always wary even in this relatively peaceful environ. When the Shoanti gives her a once over, she stares back at him openly.

When the captain finishes, she speaks. "Iriel Lasslanta here," she says by way of introducing herself to the others and to be sure Dreng knows who she is, and then she addresses Dreng, "I know little of most cities--who are these Duskwardens and can we trust them to be our guides?

"Secondly, when we get into Kaer Maga, do we know where to meet Collgardie? What does he look like? And do we need to prove to him we are who we say we are?"

I'm pretty sure I am good to go. Thanks for inviting me to play!

Thank you. Again, sorry for being dense, just wanted to be very sure. :)

Tricks known: Fetch, Come, Attack, Down, Seek, Defend, Stay, Heel

DM Jelani wrote:

Sorry, I answered that mentally, must not have typed it out (>_<)*

You can have as many tricks trained as your animal can legally know.

I'm sorry, but that is not clear.

Legally, my animal can know a maximum of six tricks (because it has an Intelligence of 2) if I take the time to train it, plus any bonus tricks it gains as an animal companion--in the case of a 5th level animal companion, 2, for a total of 8.

The if I take the time to train it is the caveat I want to be clear on with you.

If what you are saying is I can assume I took the time to train it up to its maximum tricks (so it has 8 tricks total), great.

However, I want to be very clear you are okay with assuming that I have taken the time to train the additional six tricks, since "legally" the caveat of taking the time the train the animal factors into how many tricks it knows.

I apologize if I am being dense.

Thanks, Jelani.

I do still have an unanswered question about animal tricks: the animal companion gets bonus tricks, but realistically, a 5th level hunter would also train his or her companion with additional tricks beyond the two bonus ones.

May I assume that she has trained her hawk with additional tricks, and if so, how many are reasonable? There are up to four I would like to have in addition to her two bonus tricks, but can work with fewer (or none, if that's all that's available).

Cool, thanks very much!
I looked her over, pretty solid submission. I'm not going to make any final decisions just yet, but I like her. Please stand by :)

Thanks!

I've calculated her equipment weight and as I did indeed find her encumbered, I adjusted her gear a bit (got rid of some stuff and got her an efficient quiver to keep her arrows in).

Cool, thanks very much!

This is DeathQuaker, with a submitted hunter (sorry Aeshuura, I started building the character before I saw your post--and this process, with having to provide the background and all, takes awhile, so I don't feel inclined to start over. Hopefully there's room for a couple different submissions).

This is an old alias I hadn't used in years (which is why it has prior posts) but the background, build, etc. are new (of course the build has to be :) ). Everything should be done except I have not yet calculated carrying capacity/weight (and may need to adjust gear if she's overburdened). I will update asap with the final calculations on weight but wanted to upload this while I had a moment.

I added areas on the sheet for spellcasting and animal companion, as I otherwise felt the "special abilities" area was too cluttered and I don't feel those really quite fall under special abilities. If this counts as me messing unnecessarily with the template and I lose points, so be it--I respect that the GM needs to clearly read the sheet, but so do I.

QUESTION: as a 5th level character with an animal companion, I would think I had taken some downtime to train my animal companion with some tricks beyond the bonus tricks provided. Is it allowable for me to assume I have done this? How many tricks can I assume to have trained?

I post regularly, as you can see from my campaigns tab, and you are welcome to read through my current campaigns to see what my posting style is currently like.

Thanks for the clarification! :)

As an aside, I think it's hilarious that I ended up rolling the same initiative anyway.

"Step back carefully, old friend. Keep away from them and don't let them hit you!" Iriel says to Basilan. She's suggesting he 5' step away from pseudonatural#8

BTW--trying to track modifiers here--for attack, we have +1 from Prayer, +1 from Haste, -1 to attack Pseudonaturals. For damage we have +1 to damage from Prayer. Am I missing anything?

------------
If Zidoren does not drop #8, she will full attack it, as protecting Basilan is her first priority.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30 Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

----------

However, if #8 is already down, she will drop her blade (free action) and equip her bow (move action). She will shoot #13.

Bow Attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 plus Electricity 1d6 ⇒ 3

Add 1 to attack if the -1 to hit ooky monsters does not apply

looks like attack 2 was a crit threat. Roll to confirm: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Extra die of damage if succeeds: 1d10 ⇒ 5

Iriel curses, seeing the dual wielding creature in the distance and wanting to do something about him, but unwilling to leave Basilan's side. She quickly makes her decision to do the more straightforward action, and steps forward to slice at the monster heading toward her.

5' step forward to stand next to Amihan's starting square, full attack on Creature 3.

If we're re-rolling initiative (see my question in ooc thread): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Curve blade attack 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16 damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Curve blade attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29 damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

I just want to make sure I was reading what was in the IC thread right... we are re-rolling our initiative every round?

Is this a house rule? It's fine with me, but it makes a lot more work for you re: combat tracking, Ekeebe.

Also, how does this affect readying and delaying actions in initiative order?

In case it's necessary, here's PF initiative rule for reference:

Quote:

Initiative

At the start of a battle, each combatant makes an initiative check. An initiative check is a Dexterity check. Each character applies his or her Dexterity modifier to the roll, as well as other modifiers from feats, spells, and other effects. Characters act in order, counting down from the highest result to the lowest. In every round that follows, the characters act in the same order (unless a character takes an action that results in his or her initiative changing; see Special Initiative Actions).

Again, just wanted to get clarification. I don't want to sound like I'm arguing. Thanks!

I'll update my profile with a tactics section.

Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

With gritted teeth, Iriel slices at Monster 5. If he goes down, then 6 instead.

Full Attack. I am still within 40' of Elisen, so +1 Attack bonus from prayer and -1 penalty from monsters cancel each other out. Add 2 to Attack if flanking with Zidoren.

Attack 1 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29 Damage 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Attack 2 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 Damage 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

I'm on the East Coast on the U.S. so yeah, PBC would be hard. Heck, I have trouble catching people online in my own timezone anyway.

Unfortunately the creatures aren't near any natural plants other than the occassional grass patch growing where people don't usually tread.

I had assumed it, like most village centers, had some decorative trees or bushes, but then there's been a lot of fire, hasn't there? Didn't think of that. I'll just go with the weapon-drawing action then and stay beside Basilan.

Iriel looks at Amihan, thinking the spellcaster would be most likely to be able to answer the question, "Do you know what those markings are?"

If there is a nice cluster of monsters advancing toward them, she casts Entangle on the largest/most menacing group in hopes of keeping them from advancing, careful not to include her party members in the spell's radius.

If that doesn't seem feasible, she will draw her blade if the monsters are less than 40' away, and otherwise draw her bow. She stays protectively beside Basilan.

Iriel enjoyed, after spending a long time on Basilan's lands, being able to get out once again onto the road and see new sights. Even though the forest would always be her first home, she was eager to visit the town and experience the peculiar "wilderness" of civilization. Though she spoke little, the anticipation was apparent on her face.

And the look fell as they approached the village, her brow furrowing at the penetrating silence.

In response to Zidoren, she shook her head. "No. There is something..." Her look grew more grim as it became apparent that many of the buildings had been burned.

Perception1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17

Do we need to still figure out how we know each other before the adventure begins?

I've worked for the Aristocrat for awhile (Ekeebe, does he have a name? :) ), and Amihan used to, and he became her patron. So we'd probably know each other at least a bit.

Maybe my character went recruiting for the bodyguard caravan and found Zidoren?

Maybe Aristocrat worships at Elisen's temple?

Just trying to get the ball rolling... I'm not bound to these ideas, rough as they are.

That's what I get for backwards mathing the favored class points rather than recheck what I did in PC Gen. It was actually 7 bonus hit points and 2 bonus skill points, not the 5/4 distribution I wrote on the character sheet (Because that gives me three more hit points and three less skill points, which is the discrepancy you were seeing). This is fixed now.

Note: Player has Master's Degree in English, cannot do arithmetic to save life. Will try to be careful.

BTW I'm at least back from Christmas so will be able to post, though might not be on right around New Year's weekend.

Thanks.

Profile updated with full character sheet. This supercedes the .pdf (which doesn't calculate in finesse for the Elven Curve Blade). Added some food and water to equipment list.

Background (slightly updated): Iriel lived amongst fairly isolationist elves in a forest city, but longed to explore the outside world and meet other races. Shortly before she technically came of age, she ran off to wander the world, using the skills she learned in the elven forest to survive--and later to adapt these skills in more civilized areas, where she could meet those she was so interested in. She is still curious about others and keen on learning from them, but her isolated background and reserved way of speaking makes her come off as aloof.

After being wounded by highwaymen, she was taken in by The Aristocrat who had her injuries tended to; in gratitude she offered to patrol his lands and ward off poachers and unwanted predators, which had been a problem for a long time. Although sometimes obstinate and poor at following orders, she is nonetheless loyal to the old man and often serves as his bodyguard.
